The lessons focus on the extent of change and continuity in law enforcement the period and why significant changes in punishments were introduced. There are two case studies included; The Gunpowder Plot and The Pendle Witch Trials. An exam skills lesson. Students are introduced to the concepts of interpretations and work through a variety of activities to develop their source analysis skills. They examine two different types of exam style questions and use worksheets to help guide them through the skills needed to produce a level 3 response. The lesson also builds on the knowledge gained from Lesson 9 and the lesson concludes with the students applying this knowledge to complete a 12 mark explain question.

The Slave Trade: 'Did life get better or worse for African Americans after the American Civil War?'

A lesson which looks at the changes that took place in the years after the Civil War. Students sort cards in to two categories 'things got better' and 'things got worse'. They then need to categorise these cards (e.g. laws, social changes etc). The cards then need to be ranked so plenty of opportunity for discussion and deeper level thinking. The main task is to respond to the lesson's title. Literacy support (sentence stems, key words are included). Students will have the chance to practice GCSE skills in the write up and there is a slide of additional sources that higher ability students can use to further develop their arguments.

Students learn about the two failed attempts to colonise Virginia. They analyse the decisions made on each voyage and critics these before creating a guide book for people wanting to undertake a successful voyage to the New World. This sets them to answer the lesson’s question (a 16 mark exam question). There is also a homework activity. As always there are step by step instruction, high-quality differentiated resources and exam support. This lesson concludes the Unit of Work.
