KS3 Unit 7c Biology - The body and substance abuse (Fit and Healthy) NEW AND UPDATED Aimed for High ability Year 7 but can be adapted for low/middle ability if required Further to this the lessons can also be split further - but due to time constraints and a very high ability class I was able to get through it all in 6 lessons (7 lessons including HIGHER ABILITY LESSON*) rather than 8 lessons 7Cc: The skeleton Lesson 1- The skeleton (bones, naming bones) To recall the main functions of the skeleton To be able to identify the main bones in the human skeleton To be able to relate the properties of bones to their functions Lesson 2 - Joints (type of joints and synovial joints) To be able to classify joints as different types To describe the basic parts of joints To be able to compare and contrast different skeletons 7Cd: Muscles and moving Lesson 3 - Synovial joints part 2 - with tendons, ligaments and cartilage + impact of forces on joint To be able to describe how muscles and bones work together to allow movement To consider the consequences of forces on joints To explain the locomotor system Lesson 4 - Muscles (antagonistic pairs) To be able to recall some key words To explain the action of the biceps and the triceps as an example of an antagonistic pair To make an antagonistic pair of muscles LESSON 4B* - Reflex Arc ( *HIGH ABILITY ONLY) - with my high ability class i pushed them further and we discussed the nervous system, nerve types and the reflex arc. IF you choose not to do this then there is a homework in lesson 4 where students have to write a brief summary on how muscles are controlled by nerves. To recall the nervous system To be able to understand the roles of different nerves To be able to describe how muscle action is controlled by the nervous system 7Ce Alcohol and Drugs Lesson 5 - Drugs (Categorising drugs into groups: recreational, legal, illegal and medicines - then pushing students further to discuss grouping drugs by stimulants, depressants and hallucinogens) Lesson 6 - Alcohol abuse and drug testing (discussing alcohol abuse, making wine, drug testing and the problems) Smoking is not in this scheme - however a homework has been added to STRETCH students further 6 lessons (7 lessons including HIGHER ABILITY LESSON*) including practicals (can be split to 8 if required) Enjoy !!!
