The former AST title has been replaced by the new SLE- Specialist Leader in Education. You may be endorsed by your headteacher to apply for any specialism e.g. a core subject English, Maths, Science, Assessment or NQT mentor, EYFS specialist. It could also be a foundation subject you specialise in. You will already be an outstanding practitioner and supporting colleagues in your own school or have had experience in supporting other schools in your chosen area of expertise. If you are passionate about being a leader of education and supporting other managers to lead then you need to prepare for a group discussion and an interview. Teaching Dragon Poetry and descriptive writing to year 2 will be extra fun following this outstanding unit of work. There are excellent creative ideas included in here, to enthuse children into writing interesting descriptions of dragons, and supporting them to writing missing posters about different types of dragons they’ve created themselves. They will begin by going on a dragon egg hunt, write a poem about what’s inside the egg, and then use the book ‘To Tell A dragon’ to write their own poems using a similar model. Find brilliant resources that are well differentiated to meet the needs of SEN and EAL. Haps are challenged with high level vocabulary and use of similes. Suitable for the teaching of the new English curriculum and can also be easily adapted to Year 3 as the text has ambitious description. Writing a riddle in year 2 is fun. This resource teaches children how to write riddles about snails and whales. It is linked to the story The snail and the whale by Julia Donaldson. This resource is fun and flexible to use. The supporting materials can easily be adapted to write a riddle about any creature. HAPS children are challenged with high expectations by using coordinating conjunction ‘but’ when writing a clue - e.g I have a foot but I don’t have any legs. I’m a good swimmer but I’m not a fish. This is an excellent information planning 'All About Whales'. The inspiration for this was from the book the Snail and the Whales by Julia Donaldson. It's a boy friendly text and the children got to keep African snails in the classroom. Leading on from this they learnt an exemplar text about whales, imitated it and then innovated to write their own information text about snails. This unit was linked to grammar features from the new curriculum 2017- 18 for Year 2. It includes using targets to develop use of expanded noun phrases, conjunctions and varied openers. Children structured their writing according to the purpose using headings as questions. The resource includes six weeks of planning, a text map, exemplar text, tool boxing ideas and visuals to support the imitation stage. Introducing cursive writing to years 1 and 2. By the end of the key stage children should be using a consistent legible cursive handwriting style to achieve greater depth. This resource is a good aid for classrooms to support teachers and pupils to remember the joins, and which letters to leave unjoined. The resource is useful for classroom and table top display. It can also be used to introduce all the joins correctly. In year 1 children should be reminded to form each letter correctly, with spacing and correct size. Year 2 should begin to join consistently.

The Day the Crayons Quit is a working at the expected standard reading text for Year 2. This guided reading unit is a wonderful text to use to engage reluctant readers. This reading unit is designed to support the new English Reading Framework. It is suitable for comprehension with looking, clue and thinking questions and encourages children to talk through their answers using a reciprocal approach. The resources have been designed for children to read a few letters at a time and answer literal and inference based questions. There are also other links such as poetry about crayons so that children can experience a range of genres and respond to them. Teachers can allow children to read letters written in the style of the book so there is a 'I quit' letter from the teacher for children to respond to. This work can help towards moderation and assessment purposes and evidence at the end of the year. The unit was taught over 3 weeks and includes visuals for additional activities such as predict what the crayons are saying in speech bubbles. English writing unit for year 2 and year 3 This resources supports independent writing of a narrative unit. Children read the book and plan how the main character returns home after learning her lesson about friendship and disloyalty. Children plan, invent and edit in this unit of work. there are lots on visuals and grammar features included to ensure that the Year 2 ITAFS are met. It can be easily adapted for year 3 also. A very entertaining book that will engage all readers. Grammar features include - practicing speech and alternative verbs for said. Practicing using suffix endings -ment, -less, -ness, -er, -est. Pupils write at length and improve stamina for writing. They develop characters and settings through description and dialogue. The story supports pupils to show good v evil characters in their writing.

Year 2 Narrative Unit to inspire greater depth and mastery writing skills. An excellent bundle of resources suitable for year 2 and year 3. Includes 5 weeks of planning for English and 5 separate grammar exercises within context of the book to be taught alongside it. A cold writing task begins with writing a narrative(fable) of a fox. An exemplar text is provided (re-written in the past tense to imitate and innovate). There are also other opportunities for independent creative writing pieces integrated in the unit so that children can practice skills and rehearse them independently. Book talk and comprehension activities are also included. The language in the text is ambitious as well as appropriate for children to achieve the TAF statements for the year 2 curriculum. This unit can be adapted to suit lower KS2. Links to films and short clips provide opportunities for non-fiction writing e.g. Recount of how fires start in forests or bush lands. If children have previous experiences of writing instructions- they can apply this by writing 'How to mend a broken wing' instructions or make wings for Magpie to fly in DT. Year 2 History Great Fire of London This is an initial lesson where pupils write their predictions and explain their thinking about the object, what material it’s made from and the purpose of its use The emphasis is historical inquiry. Using secondary sources and evidence to make predictions. Research about the past to check answers Pupils will have pictures related to the start of the fire to make predictions about what they are - these include; metal hook leather bucket round cheese wine bottle etc old horse cart Pupils will then have reference to the answers to find out if they are correct. The lesson allows for writing opportunities that can be used for moderation purposes in English if you are in year 2 as well as evidence for historical enquiry and significant events from the past. Year 2 Non Fiction Writing This is 14 page slide powerpoint with apt information about how to write about snails. It includes subheadings for body, eats, habitat, dangers. it gives children enough information about snails so they can research and then write their own information text about how to keep pet snails. This encourages children to apply their learning to a new context. Ideal for a topic unit in science and suitable for keeping pet African snails in class. Otherwise it can be used for English literacy non fiction unit. The text includes suitable sentence level work to incorporate year 2 grammar features such as coordinating and subordinating conjunctions. There are opportunities for children to use questions by addressing the reader e.g. Have you ever wondered how to keep pet snails?

This is a comprehensive list of words with contractions that can be used for classroom display. They in large print and categorised into word families for easy identification around the classroom. This is a useful display for children as they are no longer allowed to be given too much spelling support from the teacher. There are a couple of poems to embed the contracted words that children could use to learn poetry for pleasure. I have found this a invaluable aid to teach spelling to reach the expected standards in English. Suitable for the new curriculum. I hope you found this resource useful as I haven't found anything appropriate for contracted words as yet. I didn't want any more banners and flags in the room. The words are very large but could be made more accessible if photocopied on to A3.

Year 1 and 2 SPAG. The all important suffix endings display for the grammar washing line in the classroom. This is a very eye-catching and visual way to display all the suffixes that the children need to be able to spell and use accurately in their writing to secure working at the expected standard. The suffixes are written in bubble writing and have the common suffix ending words written inside them. They will make an excellent and immediate display. It is suitable for classes from year 1 to year 3. It currently stands proudly on display in all our KS1 class rooms. The bubble writing suffix’s available are - ment, -ed, -ly, -ing, ness, -er, est, er, less. Poetry for Year 2 focussing on grammar features including varied sentence types. Children can use visuals to support their learning to develop language to describe Christmas imagery. They then use the words to create a structured poem with a statement, exclamatory sentence with How…, a question, command and finally a statement that contains a simile. This will create a great opportunity for children to engage with poetry, learn, perform and enjoy. The lesson matches the demands of the new English curriculum for 2014 for written and spoken language. Although this is a seasonal poem, it can be used as a starting to point to change and innovate to any topic of choice. The structure would still apply to any chosen subject e.g. animals or seasons. Year 2 English Grammar Expectations within writing An excellent classroom Grammar display for pupils to access throughout their lessons in English. Can be used on teacher’s working wall or on the washing line. The resource supports learning grammar terminology and gives clear examples about the meaning of terminology. There are also examples given in context e.g how to use co-ordinating conjunctions in a sentence that has two independent clauses. Ideally each page should be blown up to A3 size so it is visible to all children. It can also be reduced to have a set on each table for the children to have easy access to. The grammar washing line supports children to edit and evaluate their own work which is part of the standards.

SPAG Rainbow Writing Code supports the Year 2 Grammar Washing Line. Please see the shop. The code is to support children to edit their writing using the same colour each time. They locate each grammar feature in a given exemplar text and use colour pencils to identify them and/or underline them. Over the year the children can self assess and peer assess using this rainbow grammar code. Eventually, by the end of the year, the aim is for the children to be able to identify all the writing grammar features in their own writing or up level it and edit if they haven’t. VCHOP stands for Vocabulary, Conjunctions, Handwriting, Openers and Punctuation. This resources supports the new National Curriculum for 2014 English Writing objectives.
