Photocopy onto card, cut up and mix. Pupils then have 5 minutes to put the correct musical features into place for Rock and Roll, Pop Ballad and Rock Anthems.
Good for a starter activity or revision purposes.
A Black History Month Power point about black activism in Music with relevant links and a task at the end.
Good for PSHE, an assembly or one off music lesson.
A basic lesson on Rock and Roll with listening activity on Jailhouse Rock (find on You Tube) and also a performance task to get pupils to play the start of Bill Hayley’s Rock Around the Clock (sheet music available on line for free)
Good as a bridge from Blues Music.

This is a 6 week Unit of work. I teach it to year 7 but is suitable for low ability Year 8 students as well.

Learning Objectives:
To understand the definition of a theme and variation.
To identify and define certain musical devices.
To listen and match devices with Mozart’s Theme and Variation.
To perform a theme.
To create 2 or 3 variations from the theme using specific musical devices. .
To explain what you have done using musical language.
Included is: a power point which covers all six lessons and a worksheet which accompanies the power point.
The power point and worksheet are quite self explanatory but I have put some brief notes below:
Discuss with the class the definitions of T and V and then listen to Mozart. Give a little background is needs be at this point on life in classical times. Explain he had no studio etc!!
Read through listening activity and discuss new keywords. (we note these in a glossary)
Complete Listening Activity.
Recap note reading and get pupils to learn Twinkle twinkle on the keyboards.
Perform to the class.
Discuss easy ways to change a theme - use tick boxes on worksheet so pupils work through list - perform.
Move onto harder ways to change theme and us tick boxes again.
Get pupils to combine all of their ideas to create 2 or 3 full variations and then perform and discuss.
A basic power point that is useful for Year 9, GCSE or Grade 1 Theory Lessons.

This is an 8 week unit of work on Programme Music (Descriptive Music) for Key Stage 3.
It includes a scheme of work, listening tasks, composing tasks and a progress log.
Lesson Objectives:
To understand the concept of programme music.
To analyse different pieces of programme music.
To perform a section of a piece of programme music.
To create your own piece of programme music.
To understand GCSE keywords and techniques of performing and composing.
This is a 7 week Unit of work. I teach it to year 8 but is suitable for all of KS3.
Included is: a power point which covers all seven lessons, a booklet which accompanies the power point or separate sheets if preferred, evaluation sheets, an assessment ladder, a scheme of work explain what to do and an independent homework project. (You will need a full set of Samba instruments!)
Learning Objectives:
1. To understand the origins of Samba music.
2. To recognise visually and aurally the instruments involved in a basic samba piece.
3. To combine polyrhythms to a constant pulse as part of a whole class ensemble and perform as a class.
To add dynamics and understand how to become a sensitive ensemblist.

This is an 8 week SOW on Blues Music for Key Stage 3.
It includes power points for all lessons and an extra cover lesson power point, a scheme of work and worksheets where necessary.
Lesson Objectives for Lesson 1 and 2:
To understand the main musical features of Blues Music
To listen to and recognise these musical features in a piece of Blues.
To perform to the class a Blues Scale.
To be able to improvise over a given bass using the Blues Scale.
Learning Objectives for lessons 3 to 5:
To understand how to form and play a chord.
To understand the structure of the Blues chord pattern.
To perform the Blues pattern correctly and in time.
To consolidate knowledge of Blues Music so far, both theory and practical.
Learning Objectives for lessons 6 to 8:
To be able to aurally identify a walking bass line.
To be able to perform my own walking bass line.
To be able to combine a given number of musical features.
To perform to the class.
To evaluate my own and others work.
Extension tasks and differentiation are included throughout and a resource list is part of the unit of work.
I have written listening questions for 18 You Tube tracks that tie in with the OCR board however can be used across boards.
Each worksheet has a range of questions and the exact title of the you tube track as the title. Under the title are the minutes you should listen to.
I find this helpful either to give out as a pack for students to complete at home or as individual homework sheet each week.
