For confident, independent readers - 7 questions to answer - straight forward recall and more complex inference questions
For confident readers - slightly shorter extract of text with 7 questions to answer - recall and inference questions
For less confident readers/for an adult to read with the children - 3 questions to answer (recall) with a choice of two possible answers for the children to pick from. Complete the sentence with the correct answer also models how to answer a question in a full sentence.
For less confident readers - Four pictures from the beginning of the story. Children can retell the story verbally using the pictures/discuss story with an adult. 3 questions to answer using the pictures to help/ Two possible choices of answer, complete the sentence with the correct answer. Also models how to answer the question in a full sentence.
5 simple sentences that are jumbled up . There are pictures to help with the sentence and also clues such as capital letters and full stops to help with sentence order.
Differentiated to 3 levels.
Lower Ability - Simple extract of text from the story with 3 questions to be answered. Answers are structured in full sentences and the children choose the correct word to complete the sentence. Can be used as a cloze prcedure or to be copied into books.
Middle Ability - Simple extract of text from the story with 6 questions to be answered. Answers are structured in full sentences and the children complete the sentence using the text to help.
Upper Ability - Short extract from the story with 7 questions to be answered. No help given in the structure of answers.
