GCSE English Literature: Romeo and Juliet Higher Ability Analysis Grids
More able analysis grids with a modelled paragraph on the first slide (generic theme of love, so that they can concentrate on the writing skills). There are more specific themes on the other slides to show how the topic can be narrowed for the most able students in your classes.
Quotations Task - Differentiated
This is a science based task that is aimed to engage students that prefer this subject to English. Sometimes these students may make the same errors in their work, such as not selecting relevant textual evidence to support their points, and this task attempts to engage them in to English and securing this skill, whilst still providing challenge for the more able. These more challenging questions do link to the new GCSE Language papers.
English Literature: Poetry Analysis Worksheet
This worksheet is aimed at LA/MA students. It gives them a structure to use when analysing poetry from the anthology and also when comparing two poems. They can also use the MITSL structure when approaching an unseen poem. The main aims of these worksheets is to give LA/MA students a consistent structure to use to help them feel more comfortable when approaching this aspect of English Literature.
A Christmas Carol Contextual Research Task
A task where students are grouped and given the opportunity to research a key contextual area and then they present this information back to the class. There are support slides included that can be printed off and placed with groups. These slides model the depth of information required for this GCSE text. The task would be much more suited to MA and HA groups.
Punctuate This!
A short series of tasks that show students the importance of punctuation. This has been useful with GCSE students, particularly LA/MA, that need to be encouraged to proofread to maximise their marks on Language Section B. The tasks are designed to show them how punctuation impacts meaning and there are also some humorous examples to maximise engagement.
GCSE English Language: Paper 1 Question 3
A helpful mnemonic to help students understand what structure is and what they can write about in their exam response. There is no extract included, which allows teachers to use something they are familiar with. It can also be easily embedded into a walking talking mock or practice exam feedback. There is a generic peer assessment at the end, which could be altered to specific levels easily.
Writing to Explain
Four writing to explain tasks that are a good introduction into this purpose. They centre around the student and their interests/lives. Peer assessments have been included for three of the tasks. They are easy to set up for cover lessons and engaging activities for students that can easily be incorporated into current lessons.
These were designed for KS3 students, however they have also been used for LA GCSE students to help them understand what writing to explain is.
GCSE English Literature: Romeo and Juliet Practice Exam Questions
Five practice exam questions, which cover themes and characters.
GCSE English Literature: Blood Brothers Practice Exam Questions
Ten questions in total on Blood brothers. The questions are presented in a similar style to the exam where an option of two questions are given. The questions explore a range of characters and themes.
KS4: Comparing Poems
Differentiated tasks and powerpoints to help with planning lessons for various students on comparing poetry. These do focus on the MITSL structure, but can be easily adapted to match other structures. They are designed to encourage independence and confidence in this area of GCSE study.
Spies: Practice assessments
Three practice assessments for the KS5 text 'Spies'. These can be set for in class assessments or as homework tasks.
Romeo and Juliet: Fate
One activity where students examine quotes bout the theme of fate. This would be suitable for all abilities and could easily be set as homework or cover work.
GCSE English Literature: Romeo and Juliet Love Quotation Grid
This has been useful to me in getting students to focus on individual words within quotations. One example has been given, however you could complete other boxes within the grid to add another level of support. This could also be used for a revision task.
GCSE Poetry - Winter Swans
Two worksheets designed to help students develop their interpretations of Winter Swans in preparation for their upcoming exam.
Walking Away - Interpretations
A worksheet designed to help students develop their interpretations as opposed to giving a single idea.
Porphyria's Lover PEE
PEE framework to help students explore key quotes from this text.
GCSE Literature Planning Sheet
A framework to help students who struggle to plan extended responses.
GCSE English Language Paper 1 (Q1, 2, 3 and Q5)
A series of lessons based on the text The Girl With All The Gifts. Supported activities to help students complete Q1-3 of Section A, with an additional task for Q5. The main focus of these lessons is to build up the students skills for Section A.
New Spec GCSE English Language Paper 2 Section B Tasks
Thirteen tasks based on Paper 2 Section B. These tasks can be dropped in to any scheme of work, be used for assessments or homework.
Could also be used in any opinion writing scheme (KS3 and KS4).
AQA GCSE Literature Power and Conflict Poetry Anthology: Blake - London AO2 Focus
Lesson for Blake's London.
This lesson uses groupings, with differentiated tasks, so students are encouraged to work independently from the teacher. This task is best suited to a more able group, however it can be broken down into two or more lessons for a less able group. A copy of the poem and a glossary is included with this resource.
For the introductory task, students should fold a piece of paper until they have 16 squares. As each line of the poem is read to them, they should select one word that interests them. These words then need to be grouped to create semantic fields, which is the way I have used to get into this poem.
