Māori Myths and Legends - Fantail Craft

(0)
The fantail (pīwakawaka) features in many Māori myths and legends. This craft activity can be used for any of the stories (or alternatively, for a study on New Zealand birds). Students write or draw on the tail fan and then attach it to the bird. You can add as many tail fans as you wish. Two Options: ♦ Attach the tail fan(s) to a bird that has been cut out. ♦ Attach the tail fan(s) to a bird that is on a sheet of paper (you will probably need a long-armed stapler for this option). Two Sets of Templates: ♦ Fantail facing right. ♦ Fantail facing left. Writing / Drawing Suggestions: ♦ Write facts about fantails. ♦ Draw your favourite part of the story. ♦ Give the story a rating out of 10 and give a reason. ♦ Write about the story (plot, setting, characters, message, etc). ♦ Draw a fantail and add labels. ♦ Write about where you’d like to fly to if you were a fantail. ♦ Write vocabulary from the story (English / Te Reo). The tail fans are completely blank (no lines for writing). If you would like lines, then I suggest you draw some before photocopying. Designed on A4 size paper. Approximate size when cut out is 23cm by 16cm. The Templates (right and left facing): ♦ Bird with page border, tree branches and the word ‘pīwakawaka’. ♦ Bird. ♦ 1x feather tail fan and 1x blank tail fan. ♦ 2 x feather tail fans. ♦ 2 x blank tail fans. ********************************************************************** © Suzanne Welch Teaching Resources

New Zealand Kiwi Craft – Flip Flap

(0)
A fun kiwi bird template that can be used for a wide variety of learning activities. Write or draw whatever you wish on the body ‘flaps’. Add as many flaps as you’d like. Two Options: ♦ Kiwi – on paper with a border. Staple the flaps to the body. Less cutting so this option may suit younger students. ♦ Kiwi – cut out and staple the flaps to the body. Two Orientations: ♦ Kiwi facing right. ♦ Kiwi facing left. Two Options for Stapling: ♦ At the neck – turn the pages sideways. ♦ At the top – lift the pages up. Included: ♦ Kiwi – with page border, tree branches and the word ‘Kiwi’. ♦ Kiwi - body (for cutting out). ♦ 1x feathered body piece and 1 x blank body piece. ♦ 2x feathered body pieces. ♦ 2x blank body pieces. ♦ 2x lined body pieces. Some Examples of Use: ♦ Reading response activity (eg Māori myths and legends). ♦ Facts about kiwis / New Zealand / New Zealanders. ♦ Poetry. ♦ Art – make a background and glue the kiwi onto it. ♦ Conservation topics. Made on A4 size paper. Approximate size when cut out: 27cm x 17cm. A fairly basic shape to cut out. The only tricky part is cutting around the whiskers. I highly recommend just cutting them off. Please note that this resource is similar to a kiwi template that I have for the story How the Kiwi Lost its Wings. Head to my store to view. ********************************************************************** © Suzanne Welch Teaching Resources

Classroom Rights and Responsibilities – Back to School

Classroom Rights and Responsibilities – Back to School

(0)
An effective activity for your students when you are setting up your classroom culture at the beginning of the year. Something a little different to the standard ‘classroom rules’ discussions. The activity focuses on 4 RIGHTS that your students have at school: ♦ We have the right to learn at school. ♦ We have the right to use school property. ♦ We have the right to be safe at school (physical wellbeing). ♦ We have the right to feel happy at school (emotional wellbeing). Students brainstorm their responsibilities as a class and write them in the individual honeycomb cell templates. These cells are then cut out and arranged around the ‘rights’ templates. You can add as many honeycomb cells as you wish. Blank cells can be included to fill sections if necessary. This makes an effective wall display that can be referred to (and added to) throughout the year. Examples of responsibilities: ♦ We have the right to learn at school – ask for help when I need it. ♦ We have the right to use school property - put equipment away when I have finished with it. ♦ We have the right to be safe at school – don’t throw things in the classroom. ♦ We have the right to feel happy at school - share things with others. Lists of examples are included to help you guide your students through the discussion / brainstorm sessions. With your students thinking of the responsibilities and writing them in kid speak, they will take more ownership of the classroom culture than if you just display a list of ‘classroom rules’ on the wall. An optional activity is also included. It is another template that says ‘We agree to be responsible’. Your students sign their name in a honeycomb cell, cut it out and place it around the centre template. Included: ♦ Teacher notes and layout examples. ♦ Examples of responsibilities ♦ Student brainstorm pages ♦ 4 ‘rights’ templates (1 per page, colour) ♦ Honeycomb cell templates (6 per page, black/white) ♦ Definition strips of ‘rights’ and ‘responsibilities’ (blank ones also provided so you can write your own meanings of the words). ♦ Additional optional template – ‘We agree to be responsible’ I have also included an editable honeycomb cell template (Powerpoint file). This gives you the option of typing the 'responsibilities' rather than writing them by hand. Provided in 2 different paper sizes: ♦ A4 paper size ♦ Letter paper size Keywords: rules, rights, responsibilities, charter, treaty, expectations, procedures, behaviour management, classroom culture, beginning of the year, back to school. ********************************************************************** © Suzanne Welch Teaching Resources
