Here is a range of extracts and assessment based questions that can be used to test students knowledge of a Christmas Carol. There are 15+ questions here than can be used to reflect each stave, and can be easily differentiated and modified as needed.

Here is a short 3-4 weeks scheme focused on poetry, suitable for KS3, looking at the key themes of marginalisation, identity, tone and imagery. Here is a fantastic 8-10 lesson scheme on Unseen Poetry covering a wide range of poems for KS4 (Year 10/11) from the Unseen Poetry spec. The scheme covers the main themes in each of the poems: Poppies, Remains, Checking Out my History and War Photographer, and has a range of tasks in them to link to each other, looking at key language and phrases in the poem. Students are encouraged to look in detail at certain phrases in each of the poems and the significance of the themes of power and conflict throughout the scheme. Each lesson contains developed learning objectives, key word foci, starter tasks and periodical assessment, exam practice and homework. Each lesson lasts around 1 hour in length and can be easily adapted to suit a range of abilities if needed. Here is a full 20+ Lesson scheme for An Inspector Calls by J.B Priestley. Each lesson has differentiated learning outcomes, key word foci and starter tasks, as well as periodical homework and a wide range of writing tasks to suit all levels. This is a great compliment to the play and there are various activities to compliment the scheme of work. Throughout the scheme is a focus on exam skills, and a range of example questions to be attempted, reflected upon and improved throughout the scheme. There is also a range of character analysis, quote analysis and discussion / speaking and listening tasks. This can be used both with Year 10 as a first teach scheme and Year 11 as a shortened review of the play. Activities can be easily modelled and modified as needed to suit the abilities and needs of learners. This scheme is ready to teach, no prep required! This is a scheme centred on Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde. This has been used with Mid-High ability KS3 and lower to mid KS4 students and covers a wide range of themes in each of the chapters of the story. Each lesson contains developed learning objectives and key word foci, as well as a starter activity. Periodical homework tasks, assessment tasks and exam style questions are included. You can either teach this with or without the text, but I have taught this alongside the text, which means this scheme can last between 6-10 1 hour lessons. Lessons can also be easily differentiated if needed and assessment / exam style tasks can be easily changed if needed. This scheme works best with KS3 (Year 8-9) learners and lower level KS4 (Year 10) students. There are no other resources needed than each of the detailed lessons. Enjoy!

This is a fantastic 3 Lesson long scheme on the Poem, The Raven. Each Lesson has detailed learning objectives, differentiated activities and a key word focus. Students will look in detail at the key themes of the poem, give initial impressions, work on key words/phrases and then complete creative reading and writing tasks. There are also optional homework tasks for students to complete, and each lesson can take up to 1 hour, so can be adapted, shortened and lengthened as needed.

This is a full half-term scheme of work focused on Gothic Writing. The scheme covers a wide range of texts and extracts. There is a wide range of activities to help learners develop their reading and writing skills. All lessons include developed learning objectives, with key word Foci and a main task in each lesson. This scheme will cover 10-12 full lessons, for 45-60 minutes depending on the ability of learners. This scheme has been used with mid ability KS3 learners and can be easily adapted for different levels of learners if required. Some of the texts covered in the scheme include: The Red Room Dracula Frankenstein The Woman in Black Wuthering Heights A great scheme and a real time-saver for high school teachers!

Here is a full half-terms (20+) lessons for Oliver Twist. The scheme includes a wide range of starter tasks, assessments, reviews and different reading and writing tasks. This scheme is suitable for low level learners. I have used this with my Y7 and Y8 learners who enjoyed the range of activities and tasks. This would also be suitable for Primary School learners and ESL / International learners. All lessons contain levelled learning objectives, key word foci and a review/starter task per lesson. Each lesson should take around 45-60 minutes depending on your learners. You can also use the 2005 version of the film to help accompany the teaching of the scheme as well as the extracts references. This scheme is suitable for low level learners. I have used this with my Y7 and Y8 learners who enjoyed the range of activities and tasks.

Here is an amazing 3-4 Lesson activity that can be done with Y5, Y6 or Y7 age learners. Learners need to be able to use language to market and sell their own luxury food item. They will work in teams, with assigned roles to pitch their product, look at costs and then advertise the product. They will need to use a variety of DAFOREST features which is recapped in the lesson. This has been extremely successful when done with KS2 and KS3 learners and can be a brilliant way to get your class using and enhancing their reading and writing skills, as well as speaking and listening skills when doing the pitch. All of the materials and worksheets are also included for easy use.

Here is a full 7 Lesson scheme for Frankenstein by Mary Shelley, looking at the novel in detail, focusing on many key scenes, characters and context throughout, as well as various starter and review activities. It also looks at some of the techniques used by the writer, as well as a drama activity and writing activities with some assessment questions for KS2 and KS3 learners which can be adapted or modified when needed.

This is a full 4/5 Lesson Scheme focused on the Taming of the Shrew and an introduction to Shakespeare. There are a range of reading and writing tasks linked to the taming of the shrew, as well as extracts that are also attached. The first lesson is a station based lesson where learners can teach each other about life in Shakespeare’s England, before going on to look at the globe theatre, before spending 2/3 lessons looking in detail at the taming of the shrew. This scheme has been taught to Y5, Y6 and Y7 learners and can be adapted to meet the needs of all learners if required.

Here is a full 8 Lesson scheme of work on Myths and Legends, including a range of worksheets and extracts which are also differentiated for all learners. This has previously been taught to Year 6 and Year 7 learners and features a wide range of activities for learners to complete, as well as group tasks looking at different myths and legends from around the world. There are also a range of extracts attached as well as a large amount of writing tasks to help test for comprehension of each myth as well as assessment criteria.

This Scheme includes 8-10 Lessons on Macbeth, centering on the key themes of the text, in particular ambition. There are also lessons helping to revise key quotes and key scenes, as well as character timelines, plot activities and differentiated worksheets/cheat sheets to help learners, which can be adapted depending on the ability of your classes. These lessons are ideal for KS3 and KS4 for comprehension, first teach and revision purposes and can be adapted as needed.

This is a full 4/5 week scheme of work for Treasure Island for the 19th Century English Literature course. This scheme was previously taught to my Year 7 and Year 8 high school students who found it extremely interesting and stimulating. The scheme includes differentiated worksheets, homework tasks and a copy of the abstract booklet to compliment the scheme. Powerpoint’s all include learning objectives, images from the film, starter tasks and reflection tasks as well as assessment lessons testing reading, writing and comprehension skills. References made to the film are to the Sky TV version produced starring Eddie Izzard which is widely available online, other clips are linked from youtube. Feel free to make changes where you see fit.

Stop the bus is a fantastic team based game to play with learners, where they need to practice and use vocabulary both old and new in order to win points for their team. The Powerpoint will show a category or picture and the teams need to work together to find words to match them. The quickest teams get points, there are also double point rounds. This game is best played on whiteboards.

This is a great lesson to introduce learners to transport, showing different types of transport, the costs and how to get from A to B in a city, London. This also introduces students to the concepts of money and takes costs into consideration to add more depth to the lesson. This is suitable for English, Maths and Geography lessons as a starter task or a fun review task and can be adapted for a range of audiences, and also includes a wide range of vocabulary, useful for all learners.

This is a fun weakest link style Scattegories game which can be used to help use and develop vocabulary skills and as a way of building teamwork skills in your classroom. This lesson was originally used for EAL learners but can be adapted easily for KS1/KS2 classes as categories/rounds can be changed where needed. Worksheets are also provided and can be modified where needed to make sure learners have help. You can also quickly add further rounds where needed or modify the existing ones to make them more challenging. A lesson plan is provided and the lesson should run for at least 45 minutes.

Here is a detailed lesson all about the history and story of the London Underground, followed by some information of how the tube works. Students then get Maps given to them to try and work out how long and how far stations are from each other. They also need to practice key dialogues and vocabulary related to travel, distance and time. This can also be modified to suit learners as there are key phrases and key information the teacher needs to give learners. We have found this lesson to be very popular and cross-curricular as it covers, English, Maths, Geography and History.

This is a fun personality test that learners can use as a fun way for the teacher to get to know learners better, and learners to learn about themselves. The learners write answers to each question on their worksheet and the teacher can go through the slides 1 by 1 to reveal the true meaning of each of the answers. This has been a huge hit with both younger and older learners and takes approximately 40 minutes to complete if done properly.

A simple and fun game where students have to guess who the Alien is by working out the emotions and feelings of the other characters in the game. Students work around the room filling in the emotions and feelings of each of the other characters on their worksheet and then use those to work out who the alien is.
