Here is a great full lesson analysing the poem “The Soldier” by Rupert Brooke. This is ideal for students in KS3, years 7,8,9 . This lesson will help students to explore and understand the themes in the poem, including conflict. The lesson goes through the poem line by line in detail, looking at and discussing the key themes, poetic devices used as a well as a range of discussion and/or writing activities. This can also be differentiated as required for lower levels by simply removing/simplifying some of the extended activities.

Here is a fantastic 8-10 lesson scheme on Unseen Poetry covering a wide range of poems for KS4 (Year 10/11) from the Unseen Poetry spec. The scheme covers the main themes in each of the poems: Poppies, Remains, Checking Out my History and War Photographer, and has a range of tasks in them to link to each other, looking at key language and phrases in the poem. Students are encouraged to look in detail at certain phrases in each of the poems and the significance of the themes of power and conflict throughout the scheme. Here is a full 20+ Lesson scheme for An Inspector Calls by J.B Priestley. Each lesson has differentiated learning outcomes, key word foci and starter tasks, as well as periodical homework and a wide range of writing tasks to suit all levels. This is a great compliment to the play and there are various activities to compliment the scheme of work. Throughout the scheme is a focus on exam skills, and a range of example questions to be attempted, reflected upon and improved throughout the scheme. There is also a range of character analysis, quote analysis and discussion / speaking and listening tasks. This can be used both with Year 10 as a first teach scheme and Year 11 as a shortened review of the play. This is a scheme centred on Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde. This has been used with Mid-High ability KS3 and lower to mid KS4 students and covers a wide range of themes in each of the chapters of the story. Each lesson contains developed learning objectives and key word foci, as well as a starter activity. Periodical homework tasks, assessment tasks and exam style questions are included. You can either teach this with or without the text, but I have taught this alongside the text, which means this scheme can last between 6-10 1 hour lessons. Lessons can also be easily differentiated if needed and assessment / exam style tasks can be easily changed if needed. This scheme works best with KS3 (Year 8-9) learners and lower level KS4 (Year 10) students. There are no other resources needed than each of the detailed lessons. Enjoy!

This is a full half-term scheme of work focused on Gothic Writing. The scheme covers a wide range of texts and extracts. Here is a full half-terms (20+) lessons for Oliver Twist. The scheme includes a wide range of starter tasks, assessments, reviews and different reading and writing tasks. This scheme is suitable for low level learners. I have used this with my Y7 and Y8 learners who enjoyed the range of activities and tasks. This would also be suitable for Primary School learners and ESL / International learners. All lessons contain levelled learning objectives, key word foci and a review/starter task per lesson. Each lesson should take around 45-60 minutes depending on your learners. You can also use the 2005 version of the film to help accompany the teaching of the scheme as well as the extracts references. This scheme is suitable for low level learners. I have used this with my Y7 and Y8 learners who enjoyed the range of activities and tasks.

Here is an amazing 3-4 Lesson activity that can be done with Y5, Y6 or Y7 age learners. Learners need to be able to use language to market and sell their own luxury food item. They will work in teams, with assigned roles to pitch their product, look at costs and then advertise the product. They will need to use a variety of DAFOREST features which is recapped in the lesson. This has been extremely successful when done with KS2 and KS3 learners and can be a brilliant way to get your class using and enhancing their reading and writing skills, as well as speaking and listening skills when doing the pitch. All of the materials and worksheets are also included for easy use.

This is a full 4/5 week scheme of work for Treasure Island for the 19th Century English Literature course. This scheme was previously taught to my Year 7 and Year 8 high school students who found it extremely interesting and stimulating. The scheme includes differentiated worksheets, homework tasks and a copy of the abstract booklet to compliment the scheme. Powerpoint’s all include learning objectives, images from the film, starter tasks and reflection tasks as well as assessment lessons testing reading, writing and comprehension skills. References made to the film are to the Sky TV version produced starring Eddie Izzard which is widely available online, other clips are linked from youtube. Feel free to make changes where you see fit.

This is a great lesson to introduce learners to transport, showing different types of transport, the costs and how to get from A to B in a city, London. This also introduces students to the concepts of money and takes costs into consideration to add more depth to the lesson. This is suitable for English, Maths and Geography lessons as a starter task or a fun review task and can be adapted for a range of audiences, and also includes a wide range of vocabulary, useful for all learners.
