The lesson then conducts a case study on the 2010 volcano in Eyjafjallajökull. Activities include labelling a diagram of volcano types, differentiating between the characteristics of a stratovolcano and shield volcano, compiling a fact file on the E15 eruption and as a plenary, watching a video on super volcanoes. This is the final lesson in a sequence on tectonics.
3.3 Tsunamis - Japan 2011
A fully resourced lesson which covers tsunamis including, earthquake, volcano, erosion and meteor tsunamis with a section on the ring of fire. The lesson then conducts a case study on the 2011 tsunami in Japan. Activities include labelling a diagram of tsunami types, creating a disaster recovery plan using a budget, a gap fill activity and an ordering worksheet.
3.2 Plate Boundaries and Earthquakes
A fully resourced lesson which covers plate boundaries and hazards including constructive, destructive and conservative boundaries (San Andreas fault). The lesson then goes on to study the causes and impacts of earthquakes. Activities include labelling a diagram of an earthquake, matching vocabulary to its definition, ordering the events of an earthquake and as a plenary playing a, earthquake board game. This is lesson 2 of 4 in a sequence on tectonics.
3.1 The Earth's Layers and Tectonic Plates
A fully resourced lesson which covers the Earths’ structure, tectonic plates, including continental and oceanic plates and convection currents underneath the asthenosphere. Activities include labelling a diagram of the earths structure, comparing oceanic and continental plates, completing a jigsaw puzzle of tectonic plates and a board game plenary. This is an introduction to a 4-lesson sequence on tectonics.
2.7 Sustainability
A fully resourced lesson which covers the sustainability of building materials and their embodied energy by comparing traditional African mud and thatch houses with modern construction materials. Activities include categorising materials as sustainable and unsustainable followed by a creative opportunity for pupils to design and draw their own sustainably made building which they will label with the materials used. This is the last lesson in a 7-lesson sequence on ecosystems.
2.6 Deforestation of the Amazon
A fully resourced lesson which covers deforestation, with a particular focus on the deforestation of the amazon rainforest. Activities include plotting the rate of deforestation on a graph, calculating the burden of Brazil’s national debt and completing a research task. This is lesson 6 out of 7 in a sequence on ecosystems.
2.5 Contamination - Chernobyl + DuPont
A fully resourced lesson which covers the nuclear disaster of Chernobyl and the impact this had on its surrounding environment. The lesson then goes on to discover “forever chemicals” and the scandal surrounding the DuPont chemical plant and how this contaminated the worlds waters. The lesson has a selection of 3 activities including opportunities for mapwork, note taking and a plenary activity to create an awareness poster. This is lesson 5 of out 7 in a sequence on Ecosystems.
2.4 Adaptations
A fully resourced lesson which covers plant and animal adaptations with a particular focus on adaptations within the rainforest. Pupils learn about leaf and root types and plants such as epiphylls, epiphytes, and lianas. The lesson has a selection of 3 activities including a creative opportunity for pupils to design and draw their own fictional plant which they will then label with adaptations. This is lesson 4 out of 7 in a sequence on ecosystems.
2.3 Biomes
A fully resourced lesson which covers the global distribution of biomes, the tri-cellular model of atmospheric circulation and changes in precipitation and temperature. The lesson has a selection of 4 activities including opportunities to interpret graphs and label maps. This is lesson 3 out of 7 in a sequence on ecosystems.
2.2 Species and Populations
A fully resourced lesson covering species, populations, biotic and abiotic factors, ecological niches, fundamental vs. realised niches, carrying capacities, interspecific relationships and limiting factors. The lesson has a selection of activities including a PEE style exam question and opportunities to interpret and draw graphs. It is the second lesson in a 7-lesson sequence on Ecosystems.
2.1 Ecosystems and Food Webs
A fully resourced lesson covering habitats, food chains and food webs, trophic levels, ecological pyramids and the pyramid of numbers and biomass. The lesson has a selection of 4 activities and a plenary quiz. This is an introductory lesson in a 7-lesson sequence on Ecosystems.
1.7 Demographic Transition Model
In depth it studies the 5 stages of the demographic transition model and makes links with the previous lesson on population pyramids. Activities include sequencing population pyramids with the 5 stages of the DTM and finding examples of countries which are at each stage of the model. There is also a plenary multiple choice quiz. This is lesson 7/7 in a sequence on populations and urbanisation
1.6 Population Pyramids
A fully resourced lesson comparing a variety of population pyramids from developing to developed countries ( LIC, MIC and HIC ). It also covers a variety of graphs to present data such as a compound bar chart, compound line graph, proportional symbols, choropleth map and a scatter graph. Activities include making comparisons and judgements between population pyramids from different countries with opportunities for discussion around the factors that create these population distributions. This is lesson 6/7 in a sequence on populations and urbanisation
1.5 Solutions to Overpopulation
A fully resourced lesson covering past and potential governmental responses to overpopulation. It also studies the pros and cons of China’s one child policy which includes population pyramids, birth rate graphs and covers the 4-2-1 effect. Activities include differentiating between pros and cons, studying a news article and answering comprehension style questions. Plus creating a diagram of the 4,2,1 effect. This is lesson 5/7 in a sequence on populations and urbanisation.
1.4 Over and Under Population
Fully resourced lesson which covers the causes and effects over and under population over time with a specific study on overpopulation in Africa. Activities include describing population changes shown by a graph. Comparing population growth across LEDS and MEDS. Comparing past population growth with future predictions in order to make comparisons over time. This is lesson 4/7 in a sequence on populations and urbanisation
1.3 Settlement Models
A fully resourced lesson covering settlement hierarchy, settlement models such as linear, nucleated and dispersed and land models such as the ones by Burgess and Hoyt.
