An Inspector Calls - Act One - Stage Directions
Just a typed up version of the stage directions from Act 1 of 'An Inspector Calls'. I couldn't find a clear version online and thought photocopying it from the play script would be too difficult to read for dyslexic or visually impaired students.
Table resources for analytical and creative writing
I have used these as table mats. They can be laminated and collated.
I have one on each table and it provides a framework for students who need help structuring their analytical writing.
It includes :
-PETAL paragraph writing frame
- a variety of analytical verbs
- descriptive writing tips
- persuasive writing techniques
Homophone Game
An active game to engage 'fidgety' learners.
Slides display different homophones with corresponding actions. Once the teacher says a sentence using one of the words, students must react with the correct response.
AQA New Spec Language Paper 2 - Mental Illness
This is a full mock exam in the format of AQA English Language 8700, Paper 2.
It includes:
-Source A - An Extract from 'Night Walks' by Dickens
-Source B - An online article arguing to reinstate asylums
-Section A questions 1-4
-Section B question 5
These sources are high level and should be used with higher ability groups to challenge them.
KS3 Detective Fiction and Creative Writing Complete SOW
This unit of work is great for KS3 classes. It includes:
-activities on how to identify key features of the genre
-class discussion and debate
-prioritisation tasks based on the '10 rules of detective fiction'
-annotation and analysis of classic detective stories
-the 4 detective stereotypes
-creating your own detective
-final assessment creative writing task
The SOW also provides differentiated objectives and outcomes, challenge tasks, writing frames an model examples.
There is also all the worksheets required to create a murder mystery lesson in your own classroom.
All you would need to provide are:
-some pieces of random evidence (any odd objects would do)
-masking tape outline of a body
-some police tape (optional)
I have taught this unit many times and is always one where students actually thank you for the lesson.
Creative Writing - Symbolism
This lesson was rated outstanding in an observation.
Students are shown a demonstration (this can be done live by the teacher if you have access to a camera or visualiser or you can use a youtube video- link included)
This lesson encourages students to understand and use symbolism in their creative writing.
I have adapted this to use with year groups from year 7 through to 11!
AQA New Spec Power and Conflict Poetry
This is a complete 9-12 week scheme of work. It has lesson by lesson activities for every poem for Power and Conflict cluster of the anthology.
For each poem there is:
- contextual information
-key themes
-annotation and analysis tasks
-stretch and challenge activities
-self and peer assessment tasks
-other various activities and suggestions to engage students
This bundle also includes a differentiated 'Nando's Style' homework sheets as well as accompanying weekly homework tasks, which supplement the unit.
There is a milestone and final assessment, which has been based on the final exam.
Some information has been taken and adapted from a variety of resources such as BBC Bitesize and Wikipedia.
Exam Style Creative Writing
A two-lesson activity based on the creative writing element of the new Language papers. This lesson was graded Outstanding.
Students have an exam style question (success criteria provided) - they are given 45 minutes to complete this task.
The next lesson they must self assess their own and re-write, ensuring that they make improvements.
20th and 21st C Fiction SOW
This unit of work uses a variety of texts, including 'The Hunger Games' to help students annotate and analyse fiction texts.
The resource provides:

AQA New Spec Language Paper 1 Harry Potter
A full mock exam paper based on Language Paper 1 of the new AQA specification.
It includes an extract from Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets.
Section A and Section B.
Ready to print and hand out to students.
Creative Writing- Buttons
This lesson is a favourite of mine to encourage creative thinking for poetry and prose. This particular lesson focuses on poetry but can easily be adapted for creative writing tasks.
It has been rated outstanding for an observation.
The main task is differentiated using a star system.
All you will need is a small collection of old buttons. (1 per table)
Macbeth - Lady Macbeth and Intro to Macbeth and Banquo
A collection of activities which focus on Lady Macbeth, specifically Act 1 Scenes 5 and 7. This PPT is over 80 slides but activities can be taken out of order to suit your teaching.
The unit includes:
-differentiated discussion and debate tasks
-Lessons that compare Macbeth and Banquo in Acts 1 Scenes 2 and 3 - What makes a man?
-Comparing LM with a typical woman (research for homework)
-model examples of analysis
-writing frames
-analysis and annotation tasks
-short starter activities which promote higher level thinking
-essay style questions throughout
This was a really useful selection of activities; great for revision!
AQA New Spec Language Paper
This resource is based on the new spec AQA Language papers. It uses an extract from Jessica Ennis' autobiography.
It includes:
-the exam (section a- questions 1-4)
-activities that promote deeper, perceptive analysis (using a clip from Shrek)
-discussion tasks
-peer and self-assessment tasks
-model responses
It has been really useful with my year 9 and 10 classes!
The extracts have been differentiated into easy, medium and difficult, so you can adapt for any year groups/classes.
The easy one has scaffold-ed annotations and guided questions. The medium has some key sections highlighted and annotated and the challenge worksheet is just a blank extract.

KS3 Victorian Villains complete SOW
This unit work focuses on skills based on the new AQA Literature spec. It prepares students for analysis and comparison. It also has some activities based on the audiobook version of 'Dracula' found on youtube.
It includes:
-discussion and debate activities
-differentiated worksheets analysing existing villains
-key features of villains
-sentence framework and model responses
-differentiated s/c on almost every slide
-challenge activities
-context about Victorian England
-creative writing tasks
-analysis tasks based on Bill Sikes and Dracula

This is a really thorough and enjoyable SOW that can be adapted for all abilities.
Year 9 Hamlet Complete Unit of Work
This resource can be adapted for all ages. It is a complete unit of work with a variety of activities including:

This was a really useful and engaging SOW for reluctant groups or those struggling to grasp the language of Shakespeare.
Lady Macbeth - Group Roles - discussion and debate
This is a whole lesson which focuses on Lady Macbeth.
It contains group roles and encourages students to think critically about her character.
AQA Language Paper 1 - Year 8
This resource is based on the sample exams from AQA.
It has tips on how to structure and answer each question.
It has been extremely useful!
AQA New Spec Language Paper 2 - Unit of Work
This resource uses extracts from the OXFORD AQA text books.
It includes:
-discussion work
-language analysis tasks for both '1984' and 'I am Malala'
-structural analysis tasks for both texts
-stretch and challenge activities on most slides
-a detailed flow chart to help plan a high level essay
-a PEDAL paragraph writing frame
-help with Questions 2 and 4 from Language Paper 2 including 'the anatomy of a level 2-4 response)
-writing grids for less able students
-model answers
-peer assessment sheets using the new spec exam criteria
I used this with a top set year 9 class but can be adapted for all abilities.
AQA New Spec - Year 8 mock Language Paper - Twilight
This resource is based on the new AQA GCSE English Language Paper 1. It is aimed at KS3 and uses an extract from 'Twilight'.
This resource includes the extract and exam-style questions 1-4 (section a).
Spoken Language
This is an old scheme of work - it focuses on the analysis of spoken language and covers concepts such as dialect, accent, Grice's Maxims and theories from other prominent language researchers.
It is very useful to introduce KS4 and even 5 to the basics of language.
