Parthenon Frieze/ Elgin Marbles - British Museum trip resource Y5 or 6

Prepared for a Y5 trip to the British Museum. They could also be used in the classroom with resources found online. The children look at the Parthenon frieze (Elgin Marbles) and learn about the controversy surrounding it. It is based on rooms 18b and 18 in the British Museum. There is a teacher script with images. Then there are two follow up worksheets to be done on clipboards. The second one could be used back at school as the basis for a discussion or for writing a balanced argument in English. Part 1 - The Panathenaic procession to celebrate Athena’s birthday. Look for different parts of the procession, sketch the peplos and write a short descriptive passage. Part 2 - The history of the Parthenon, the removal of the sculptures (formerly known as the Elgin Marbles) and the controversy surrounding their return to Athens.

Varjak Paw Assembly script and ppt

This is a script for a class assembly, originally used for a year 4 class who were reading Varjak Paw by SF Said. It links the “ways” or skills that Varjak learns in the text with the school Golden Rules (from Jenny Mosley) It has some scenes from the story for acting out, but doesn’t spoil the plot. It includes a poem about winning through traits such as resilience and a positive attitude, and stresses the importance of friendship. It includes the lyrics for the song “Lean on Me” (but not the music) There is potential to add dance or movement to show some of Varjak’s skills. I used some copyright free music for this. The script and powerpoint are fully editable for your own school and situation. It has parts for 30 children - a variety of acting and narration. Hopefully it will save you lots of time.

Included is a script, powerpoint slides with sound effects embedded and a link to a suitable song. I wrote this for a year 5 class for WBD, but have edited as a general ‘book week’ resource for copyright reasons. It is completely editable so that you can personalise it for your class. The premise is that some very important documents have been stolen from the DfE containing a very important message for parents and children in book week. 4 book characters, who are special agents, are called together by James Bond to solve the crime. The characters are Agent Asha, Jack Stalwart, Alex Rider and Amari (from Amari and the Night Brothers. The children travel through a portal into different books to retrieve the documents. I have left in the books I used, (Ice Trap and the 13 Storey Treehouse) which were class books we had read, but you can substitute your own. You can add more books to create more parts depending on the size of your class. there are currently 24. No part is too long, there are several one line parts and the costumes can be quite simple. We dressed the child agents in hoodies and jeans with large ID badges for simplicity. Just before each scene a stranger tiptoes through and hides a large envelope marked “secret documents.” The dramatic reveal at the end is that it was James Bond himself who had stolen the documents as he was jealous of the younger generation of agents. The secret documents spell out the message “READ MORE.” Included is a set of powerpoint backgrounds with embedded sound effects and a link to a WBD song on YouTube which we used at the end.
