These are useful literacy resources for marking extended pieces of writing in science. The first document is best printed as 2 per A4 sheet and can be attached to students work to aid feedback. The second document is best printed on A3 as posters for display to provide information for students when undertaking extended pieces of writing. These are a set of posters I designed for displaying around our faculty. The idea is to catch the students' attention. Work best if regularly swapped around. Let me know how useful you find these.

The exit passes are best printed 4 per A4 sheet. There are multiple copies as each has a separate interesting science fact on it. The table toppers are best done on A4 and laminated. These can be left on tables for the duration of the lesson and any questions the students have can be written on them. Both these resources are in response to the requirement to encourage students to have a curiosity about science. As usual please provide feedback.

Exactly what it says on the tin! This is an adapted version of a SOLO sequencing HOT map for practicals.It is best printed back to back on A3 paper. Students then plan their practical using one side. Once completed they can then write up their method, comparing this with the original plan.When I have used it I have found students are more likely to write in order to achieve higher SOLO levels.As usual feedback is welcome.

This is a scaffold for providing students with regular no-stakes testing of their Biology glossaries. As such it is best used in conjunction with the GCSE Biology AQA Glossaries. It is best printed A3 size; 2 per page and back to back. It also includes my own marking system codes to allow students to fully analyse their own performance. To reduce the stakes to zero then results should not be collected. This allows students to maximise their long term retention. I have use this type of resource with great effect at KS3, 4 and 5 with small adaptations to suit the relevant glossaries. Excellent method for developing long term retention.

This can be used to test students' retention of key words from their glossaries. This is best used as a starter to the lesson. 5 key words or phrases can be read from the appropriate glossary. Sheets can be collected in and the words marked for spelling. The definitions can be given a mark out of 2. Once returned the students can check and correct their answers and evaluate their performance using the scaffolded questions. This resource can be used with any of the glossaries... KS3 Year 7, KS3 Year 8, KS3 Year 9, GCSE Biology, GCSE Chemistry, GCSE Physics, AS Biology or A2 Biology. This also works well when used regularly in conjunction with Quick quiz templates. Best printed A4, 2 per side and back to back. They can then be cut in half. If folded the section including name and date can then be stuck down into exercise books at a later stage. (Far quicker to mark these loose rather than pre-stuck into books!)

Variety of SOLO style flow charts (sequencing, Compare and Contrast, Describe). Mainly based on Biology concepts but could easily be adapted for any other subject. Perfect for scaffolding students' learning and reaching those ever more challenging higher order thinking skills. Many of the resources are best printed back to back (and often A3). These have been used very successfully with Y7-13 and also staff training. Even if you are not familiar with SOLO taxonomy they are still very useful tools to encourage higher order thinking and consequently the holy grail of challenge!

These are A3 posters for classroom display - this one contains all the key words for AQA KS4 Biology (2016 onwards) section 1 (Cells and organisation). It consists of 13 pages with around 30 words per page. They are deliberately not in alphabetical order to assist with retention strategies. These contain more words than the glossaries alone.

This includes an Assessment without levels grid (student version and staff version) and a feedback sheet. The statements are all coded to reduce workload when providing feedback to students. Students can work in groups to arrange the hexagons into interlocking patterns. They should be encouraged to justify their links, A further activity is to give 2 random numbers and students have to explain how they link from one word across to another. Can also be used as a memory style game.
