This was an activity written for the AQA science GCSE, C1 7.2 The restless earth. But could also be used for geography or KS3 science with a small amount of editing. Students use information from the textbook to create an A3 newspaper article explaining what caused an earthquake.

This is an activity suitable for a lesson or as a piece of homework. It is designed to develop literacy and promote an interest and awareness in science. The students find a science based news story published in the last 7 days that they find interesting. They pick out keywords and find definitions for them. They research additional information and summarise the story in their own words.

These are 12 picture cards each describing a different stage of the rock cycle. They can be cut out and arranged by the students. Could be a 15 minute activity on its own, or could be a longer activity if you ask the students to use the cards as a basis for making their own poster.

An activity that allows students to build a food web and work out the numbers of animals. Then asks them to see how changing the numbers of one animal changes the rest of the web. Requires: String, scissors and counters. Sheets need printing and photocopying. Includes results table and questions and a completed results table for the teacher. There is a version which is for more advanced students and a lower ability/starter activity version which is just to build the food web.

This card sort activity allows students to create a flow diagram explaining the processes in different types of electricity generation. They can also describe the energy transfers that take place. They can build flow diagrams for coal, oil, gas, nuclear, tidal, wave, geothermal, wind & solar energy.

The aim of this experiment is to use results of a titration to perform a calculation linked to a real life example of measuring sulphur dioxide emissions from a power station. The scenario is that students are given a solution of sulfuric acid produced when waste gas from a power station is bubbled through hydrogen peroxide. They perform a titration the sulfuric acid against a known solution of sodium carbonate then use the results to calculate the mass of sulfur dioxide in the waste gas. Included in the PowerPoint is an introduction to the experiment, teachers notes, results table, instructions for students, advice on performing titrations and how to do the calculations. Depending on the group, different levels of support can be given.
