This session uses songs to demonstrate shifts in mood/tone and changes in focus. They’re always quite obvious so it’s a good way into the topic. It requires students to research their own set of lyrics but there’s no reason why you can’t print off some popular lyrics, randomly, and take them in with you. Designed for a 1.5hr session in which students revisit figurative features and try to extend them but it could easily be stretched out longer. Starter is a split image with a prompt for half the group to annotate one half and vice-versa. Then share annotations and save for later student-led choice in the final summative task. There is a small, looped video of a burning fire (courtesy of pixabay.com). This helps to prompt vocabulary ideas and loops until stopped or on slide transition. Reminders of adjective/adverb use, as well as a mark scheme for upper level 3 (grade 5) through which you can explain or direct questions to students. With a bonfire night theme and an extract from a text about a fire… This fully animated session is meant for a quick 1.5 hour Paper 1 - Question 4 practice. It defines the term: ‘critical evaluation’, goes over strategy for the question, breaks down the level 3 mark scheme (grades 4-5) and provides a timed question and example part-response to it, after their own attempt. The starter is evaluating an image on safety. 2 sided handout means students will have to take some notes if they haven’t already in previous sessions. This session covers language analysis - briefly - and guides through a triangulated answer using an older Use for a quick practice session or as an intro session to analysing language with a greades 4-5 (level 3) mark scheme. There is also a Guided Triangulation Worksheet. It helps train students to triangulate and embed their evidence and link all 3 quotations to the same main point. Writing more sophisticatedly as a result, they will gain more marks as it will be more perceptive than a standard set of PEE paragraphs… There is also an example answer but focused on a different text. I find it best not to use a direct example. Some just copy and paraphrase but with this, they really have to confront the difference as well; it also shows a good detailed paragraph. These cover Paper 2 and have a range of texts and questions covering all P2 AOs. There are 2 sets of cards for Reading and 1 set for Writing. 16 mini extracts 32 reading questions 16 example statements for Persuasive Writing. 6 sets of TEQ example answer paragraph cards. There is also a second set of reading cards - which have been coloured to match each individual P2 set, using the block colours allows for quite a sophisticated matching task. Rainbow cards allow for quicker access with easy matching and are much better for lower level learners. The reading cards can be double-sided but single-sided allows for more simultaneous use. Best to laminate them and reduce the risk of wear and tear. A detailed collection for Paper 1 is also in my shop!

This is a colourful collection of text extracts and exam-style questions for Paper 1 - Creative Reading & Writing. 4 sets of 4 on A3 for the reading questions - 16 micro mocks = 64 questions in total + 16 mini extracts. This one also comes in a rainbow pack which removes the opportunity for a challenging jigsaw activity because each line is a unique colour/shade. 2 sets of 4 on A4 for Q5 - 8 images and 2x cards for each - one based on description, the other: narration. Best to be printed and laminated so that they can be reused without the risk of wear and tear. Each set for Section A - has a unique colour so they can be double-sided and kept like a pack. Just print pink/green & blue/yellow - printing from the word doc. They look great as in the photograph preview image but, printing them off single-sided means having the ability to use 4 sets at once, with four small groups and we now have a few sets in a drop-in room so students can just choose some to revise with. The set with four blocked colours also make a good jigsaw puzzle, as all texts have matching questions, to start a revision session. Students need to match the questions with each text - basic comprehension Can be used in workshops or given to students to take home and use for revision/practice. Paper 2 now in my shop! =-)

Just what it says on the tin! With the added extra of multiple choice and student-led differentiation.=-) Print them off double-sided and one side covers only description, whilst the other covers a narrative approach. I use these as an extension or starter task - also in drop-in sessions, particularly closer to the exams. They are great for practising varying and matching vocabulary to genre. Having also posted some free A3 Image Planning Boards: these would be good prompts for planning a creative piece and also to aid learners who are struggling. Ask students to: Create/plan a story in a specific genre. Write an opening/ending to a narrative. Write a character breakdown/description. Write a setting breakdown/description. Match vocabulary to genre. Research Synonyms. Research letters of the Alphabet which aren’t present! They don’t make a bad poster, either!

These speak for themselves, really. Great to aid planning for a creative piece of writing based on an image - word doc is included so that the box labels can be edited, or images replaced if you prefer. If you have time - you can fill one out as an example and print them. I took the pictures with a decent-ish camera, so they look great in A3. Lamination would enhance them as well. Work well in drop-in sessions, too. students have a range to choose from, with the free image cards I’ve also shared and a set of purchasable revision cards in my shop.

There is a text extract in this from a school shooting incident…be warned - covers sensitive issues. This covers basic word classes and Metaphor/Simile. It is laced with activities and tasks as well as images and a really short video clip of moving clouds which will hopefully prompt simile creation. Prepped for a 3hr class with some interesting texts and questions. There is an example analysis and mark schemes included. This features two articles covering writer’s views of The Simpsons. Ease your students into comparisons with this guided session, animated - click-by-click/step-by-step for ease of use. It has animated annotations, planning strategies and examples - as well as example comments. Once reviews are created and images used - these are considered ‘fair use’ under copyright law, following the ‘Transformative use’ amendment when: they have undergone creative transformation and have been reviewed and thereby complimented.

A fully animated, step-by-step, click-by-click presentation with matching handout. There are many resources for A02 but this particular session is packed with animated annotations, activities and a summative task. It also has a rather interesting topic and the pink is striking on the larger screen. Also includes is a Fast & Furious Starter Task and some language feature revision which is easily replaced with your own slide. There is also a scaffold worksheet - based only on the title - should some students struggle to reach the level of detail required.

Made this over the weekend and would love some feedback… This mock features a couple of pages from Alan Bissett’s ‘Boyracers’ - a Scottish novel which is written partly in a Scottish vernacular form. I have removed all major profanity so words are literally silenced when reading so some assumptions can be made. It is really funny reading it out and can be very engaging with students. So I thought I’d share it in the form of a mock paper. Can be used in classes or as homework/independent revision - please be doubly aware of the audience aim. Let me know what you think! =-)
