This has been updated with animated answers for the connectivity task. This aims to introduce students to essay writing and academic language. It goes in from a conceptual angle based on teleological connections. Everything, including essays, is a smaller/larger version if something larger/smaller. It will last about 2 hours or so but I made it when I first started so there might be some alterations needed.

Want to challenge your students to write in a more sophisticated and perceptive way? Want to impress observers with your natural embedding of maths? There is a reason some find English difficult and, more often than not, it’s because they think they can’t do it. They think it’s difficult - like maths can be. However, this lesson could change all that and help your students realise how easy it is because we are programmed to do it! This 3 hour lesson is split across two 1.5hr sessions and includes formative tasks and homework. There are detailed animations to provide a number of different examples of patterns across language and structure, using shapes and images and text boxes in a visually pleasing manner. There are no handouts with this as students are encouraged to write down some notes and small quotes and to take pictures with their smart devices. I have a sample pair of these in my shop for a clear preview. The texts are pretty small on the paper 2 ones but people have generally found them okay to read. I’ve added a larger version of the Hair Paper 2 Micro Mock - just in case. These Micro mocks are editable and if you want to reword/change questions then Word documents are also available - after purchase via email. Based on the visits of two presidents from recent times and the 1980s, to the UK, this full intro/revision set has over 30 slides and an original exam-style paper, as well as the sources on an A3 sheet for pair/group annotation work. There are example answers which are based on different questions and an opening to a Q5 response. Run the fully animated slide show to see how it all moves in Office 365. There is also a card matching game built into an intro to Q4. Each examplar is based on a different question to what is in the paper itself and so there is plenty for students to model their own responses upon.

Triangulating and embedding evidence is encouraged but the slides can easily be switched back if you choose. This could be spread out across a couple of weeks of 3hr sessions because it’s 45 slides long and has revision slides for basic terminology. Fun Starter Task for Paper 1 - Question 3 - Endgame Trailer with second annotated answers video. Printable game cards - set of 4 with a mixture of different features.

This uses a character from GOT books and a couple of other famous text examples, with animated annotations and analyses of foreshadowing. One is annotated and the final one is blank which also comes in A4 PDF. The penultimate task can be group annotations, pairs or individual and then finally provide the structure question to write an exam-style response for assessment purposes. Finally, there is a foreshadowing grid for extension, which is guided for less able students. This guidance can be removed for more able students.

Linking to Paper 1, Question 3 - this worksheet has 4 narrative expositions and grids for students to organise their ideas. It pushes them to make one main point about how interesting the opening is and then explain how the reader is affected, whilst using three quotes/key words or phrases to evidence it. I usually use it as a stretch and challenge exercise, in extra revision sessions or as bookends to a session. The PPT is a recent thing which allows it to be used as a more inclusive lesson. It offers a strategy to aim for 8 minutes and as much of a sophisticated answer as possible.

Now with accompanying Powerpoint! Grade boosting - I hope! - a workbook like the other I’ve created. Specifically around skills and some ideas of how to boost grades. Good for most students to work independently but lower level students will need some support. It covers all the basic elements of writing for P2Q5 - Nonfiction. It has an example answer, a number of tasks to complete, format/layout of the main forms and some extra persuasive features like anecdotes and expert opinions.

Now with accompanying PPT file! For GCSE students of English language to revise and practise their skills. Start with basic summaries and ease into what Paper 2, Question 2 requires. With examples and extra exam-style tasks, this booklet makes a great 1.5-2hr session with or for homework. It covers the main elements of the summary question and has a number of tasks to complete as well as an exam-style summative task.

These are great for a revision workshop session but one was made for an assessment revision session near Halloween. As you will tell, I’m sure. A range of paper 1 questions on each. I’ve also had them on walls and got groups to write on laminated copies with dry-wipe pens from which they took pictures and used the notes to create full answers.

PLEASE READ BEFORE REPORTING! WARNING the street name: ‘Bell End’ is featured in this hand out. It was made with my own students in mind who are 16-18 but always makes them giggle. Please also bear in mind that this is a street name. It’s not an insult until YOU make it one… This is fantastic to use with adults and there are some very significant issues which are readable in the subtext. Great to push students to contextualise and finally reach that grade 4!

Just revision quiz for use as a formative assessment - revision/recap task. Great to get students into teams to work together on this one. You need to keep track of individual or team scores but the categories were a pain to think of. Any feedback, suggestions for improvements are most welcome!

This is a local text as I am a St. Helens lad and source A is very relevant to our locality. However - it’s not a bad little resource for comparing language use over time and comparing the perspectives. The comparison mark scheme is included and a choice of two Source B documents - one which is accompanied by a video which I embedded so that one can teach even with a loss of internet connection. The video is a historical marvel to watch. The students will have a good laugh at it… It uses a planning sheet which will help some students guide their writing and structure their response. There is also a detailed commentary on an example, triangulated response to Paper 2 - Question 4.

Teach your students to argue with conviction! This uses 'Fule’s Gold from the June 2018 paper and some provocative and debate-fuelling perfume Ad videos for a starter and a developed activity. There is an example part-response and annotations task which will demonstrate what is meant by an evaluative comment. The colour-coded annotations page is also in plain form for those with visual stress. The example answer is presented with the mark-scheme and is fully animated for a step-by-step annotations task - help your students get the answer right with this interactive and interesting 3hr session.
