This unit focuses on descriptive writing, inspired by the magical storytelling in Yokki and the Parno Gry. Students will develop their skills in crafting vivid imagery using sensory details and rich vocabulary. They will also refine their sentence structure by incorporating subordination (e.g., “although,” “because,” “if”) and coordination (e.g., “and,” “but,” “so”) to create complex and compound sentences.
In Week 2, lessons will include a detailed exploration of the characters and settings, guiding students to describe them vividly. An adaptive worksheet is included to support learners of all levels, ensuring that every student can successfully engage with the task and make progress in their writing.

In Week 4, pupils will focus on oral storytelling by retelling the story of Yokki and the Parno Gry. Through structured activities, they will practise sequencing events, using descriptive language to bring the settings to life, and incorporating key story details. Emphasis will be placed on vivid descriptions of settings, inspired by the original text, to build their storytelling confidence. Pupils will then use these skills to collaboratively create and share their own imaginative retellings. Adaptive support is included to ensure all pupils can fully participate and succeed.
In Week 3, pupils will focus on writing detailed descriptions by analysing the key features of descriptive writing, such as sensory language, figurative expressions, and varied sentence structures. They will also practise making inferences from the text to deepen their understanding of the characters and settings, using these insights to enhance their own writing. Activities will encourage pupils to draw conclusions from clues in the story and translate these ideas into their descriptive work. Adaptive tasks are included to ensure all learners can engage meaningfully with the objectives.
In Week 5, pupils will focus on narrative writing by planning their own stories inspired by Yokki and the Parno Gry. Using the Boxed-Up Method, they will break their narratives into clear sections, including the introduction, build-up, problem, resolution, and ending. Pupils will draw on their descriptive writing skills to create vivid settings, compelling characters, and engaging plots. Planning activities will ensure pupils structure their ideas effectively, laying the groundwork for a well-developed story. Adaptive templates are provided to support all learners in organising their narratives successfully.

The Tower of London, a historic landmark and UNESCO World Heritage Site, has stood for nearly 1,000 years as a royal palace, prison, and symbol of British history. Its imposing walls housed some of the most infamous prisoners in history, but not all stayed confined. Tales of daring escapes, such as those of John Gerard, who fled using a rope smuggled into his cell, or the Earl of Nithsdale, disguised in women’s clothing, add an element of intrigue to its legacy. These incredible stories highlight both the resilience of the prisoners and the Tower’s fascinating past as a place of both oppression and ingenuity.
