The pantomime season may be coming to an end but audience participation is still being encouraged at The Calculating Mr One, Quantum Theatre’s latest educational production.
Described as “a musical comedy that explores the importance of mathematics and problem solving in everyday life”, the play follows the footsteps of Victorians Will Jeremiah Bloodhound and Kitty Beagle as they try and solve the mystery of Ebenezer Brain Teaser’s missing calculating machine.
The Calculating Mr One has been created to fit the maths curriculum and meet numeracy targets. Problem solving, reasoning, number lines, patterns, sequences number bonds, place values, approximation and times tables are all featured. Pupils will also be invited up on stage to help the characters solve the mystery.
Many venues will be holding a key stage 1 version in the morning followed by a key stage 2 version of the play in the afternoon.
For the past 15 years Quantum Theatre has specialised in science education and The Calculating Mr One is their first foray into maths. Artistic Director Jessica Whitmore says: “By bringing our comedy, drama, music and dance to a subject we hope to create something new and vibrant that will stick in children’s minds.”
The 42-date tour, which will visit art centres and theatres across England and Wales, begins on January 25 at Tameside Hippodrome in Manchester and tours until late May.
