The lesson provides students with an introduction to the writer Allen Edger Poe and one of his most important pieces of writing, A Tell-Tale-Heart. The lesson begins with a fact-finding task, then progress to looking at the text and the Gothic conventions that are presented. There are tasks for the class to identify quotations linked to key images. The class will then move on to attempt an exam-style question, there is also a written example to help them to construct a well-written response.

The lesson explores the purpose of travel writing and the conventions that are expected in this type of writing. There are tasks to get students to start thinking about the AFOREST techniques and how to identify them within a text.

The lesson builds students knowledge to help them build up and develop a balanced argument using connectives and conjunctions to structure their writing.

This is a fully differentiated lesson looking focusing largely on chapter seven of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde. The lesson works well for revision as it tests learner’s ability to recall the key chapters within the novella and they key events. The lesson moves on to look at the theme of good and evil and how this is conveyed in key sections of the text. The lesson works well both face-to-face as well as online and have been tried and tested with my own groups.
