The focus is on key beginner Spanish vocabulary: = los días de la semana en español : days of the week in Spanish = los meses y las estaciones del año en español : months & seasons of the year in Spanish Sopas de letras are a fabulous way of encouraging learners to engage with the written word in Spanish, refreshing and reinforcing language as they complete the grids. This mini-bundle features two sets of 10 differentiated word searches & answer keys, with each consecutive grid increasing in challenge. In each set, there are 5 Spanish to Spanish grids, where students are prompted with Spanish words, and look for them in Spanish in the grid. For additional consolidation, each grid also features an English word list that they have to complete, really putting their knowledge to the test. There are also 5 English to Spanish grids, where the prompt words are given in English, and students have to find the Spanish equivalent in the grid. For additional consolidation and practice in writing in Spanish, they also complete the Spanish word list on each page. Students can tell in which direction the words are written by looking at the arrow key on each grid. There is an answer grid for each word search, so that learners can check their answers - or use for a little extra help if they need it. Answer keys are really essential - they offer learners an additional opportunity to engage with language, and they genuinely enjoy ‘correcting’ their own, and particularly each others’ work. They’re a great teacher time-saver too, which is always a good thing! The word searches are in landscape format, as I’ve found this to be the best format for beginner English-speaking language learners because of the shared direction of reading and writing from left to right, ensuring language is very clear and accessible. This kind of activity is really versatile too - I use as for cover lessons, as starters, refreshers, plenaries or fun-time fillers at any time during the school year, as well as when I’m focusing on days, months and seasons in Spanish. It’s actually really useful to introduce the pluperfect tense in German fairly closely with the perfect tense, as the patterns are identical, other than the auxiliary tense, and it allows students to compare and contrast the tenses, and to practice both fairly simultaneously - in my experience, students do not confuse or mix up the tenses when they’re learning and using them together. I find it useful to remind students of a number of things when focusing on or revising tense and verb conjugation. For example with the pluperfect tense, students need to have a good grasp of the relevant auxiliary in the imperfect tense, and to get used to ensuring that the past participle is situated at the end of the clause or sentence. Forming the past participle of a whole range of verb groups follows a certain pattern, which students are able to identify and predict the more they work with conjugation. GCSE GERMAN DOMINOES GAMES High-frequency German verbs dominoes games: 3 games and challenges are a lively alternative to more traditional grammar & vocabulary ‘drilling’ activities. They will help students build up and embed their vocabulary and knowledge of high-frequency German verbs in a cooperative, communicative and interactive way, independently of the teacher. There are 99 common German verbs in the infinitive form, along with the corresponding English verbs. Students can work happily challenging themselves and each other to create a perfect domino bilingual verb sequence, on the classroom floor, or on a long(ish) table, by matching the German and English verbs. The game has a bonus multi-focus on listening, speaking, pronunciation, and reading, and also helps students identify cognates and words that may look similar to English, but mean something different. There are three games, each with a different level of challenge: Challenge One features the verbs in alphabetical order, German to English Challenge Two features the verbs in random order, also German to English Challenge Three again features the verbs in random order, but this time from English to German, which works a little different in terms of vocab recall There’s a full alphabetical German-English verb list, which students find really useful as they begin to build and embed their verb vocabulary - we find it useful to have a quick look through the list prior to playing for the first time, and it’s also really good for some additional whole-group pronunciation practice. Each challenge is on a different background, so that they can be easily identified. To ensure successful learning, play regularly as you work with verbs and vocabulary - against a timer in teams works well to map both improved recall and word recognition, as well as increasing confidence - students genuinely enjoy seeing if they can beat their own time record. Dominoes games work really well in language learning as a free-choice activity - I have folders of resources for students to select their own activity, according to what they feel they would most like to revisit. We have free-choice activity time every few lessons for a half hour or so, which also provides a welcome break from the particular target focus. There’s definitely prep involved - printing and cutting out. I always laminate my dominoes games, as they’re far more learner-friendly, and they last for absolutely years, so once you’re prepped the set or several sets, you will never have to prep the games again. There are 60 European countries included - there may be a number of countries and capital cities that students do not know, or are not aware of, so the worksheets help them fully develop their general awareness, knowledge and understanding of Europe and the wider world. I created these differentiated Primary French animals bingo games, building in a range of challenges, to help my students engage happily with their French. They work just as well with older learners too! They really enjoy playing games, and these bingo games are perfect for developing listening, speaking, reading and writing/spelling skills. They’re also really useful for a focus on definite article and gender. The game isn’t actually about learning all the animals - 20 is too many in ‘one go’ - select your core vocab, with the additional animals useful for quick recall practice. PRIMARY SPANISH YEAR 7 SPANISH KS3 SPANISH DAYS OF THE WEEK Word searches are a great way of encouraging learners to engage with the written word in Spanish, refreshing and reinforcing language as they complete the grids. These are ten differentiated word searches focusing on the days of the week in Spanish. My students really enjoy practising their vocabulary with word searches. They like to work independently, either alone, in pairs or in small groups, challenging themselves (and each other!) to progress through the challenges. Word searches are easily differentiated: there are five Spanish to Spanish grids, with the Spanish words as prompts. Students then find them in Spanish in the grid. A great way of really consolidating vocab is to get students to complete the word list on the grid sheet too. There are also five English to Spanish grids. With these, the prompt words are in English, so students have to know the correct Spanish word in order to find it in the grid. There’s a word list to complete on these too. As the challenge increases, the words appear in an increasing number of different directions, and students can identify which directions they’re looking for by referring to the arrow key on each grid. My students always like to have answer keys, and I really find these an integral and essential element of the learning activity. They enable students to self and peer-assess, and they actually work as a further opportunity for them to engage with the vocabulary. The word searches are in landscape format, mirroring the direction of reading from left to right in both Spanish and English, and in my experience, this is really useful for young beginner Spanish learners, as they begin to familiarize themselves with the written word in Spanish. GCSE ITALIAN KS4 ITALIAN A LEVEL ITALIAN CONDITIONAL TENSE 25 ITALIAN -ARE VERBS My students really like this kind of grammar activity, as they like to work and learn independently, which is a successful way of varying teaching and learning methodologies - I’ve found it’s really important to avoid predominantly teacher-led learning in the languages classroom. There are 150 conjugations across 3 differentiated conjugation challenges. I use these kinds of workbooks in lots of different ways: for practice during the introduction phase, for independent choice in class time, for home learning, for practice and revision during vacation and at return to class, and for cover lessons - they’re really versatile, and ideal for KS4 Italian students who are moving on to more complex texts tenses in Italian, and for KS5 Italian A Level Italian students as revision. The workbook focuses on formation and conjugation, rather than usage, though it’s definitely useful to remind students of a number of things when focusing on or revising tense and verb formation and conjugation. GCSE GERMAN KS4 GERMAN KS5 GERMAN VERBS 500 high-frequency German verbs, listed alphabetically both German-English and English-German - a great learning support resource for KS4 German moving into advanced German A Level learners, and can also be given to KS3 German students, providing verb audit tool, and a language road map with learning goals, outlining the verbs they should ideally know by a specific stage in their learning. I create a lot of language learning reference books for my languages students, they’re really popular with my students, who like to have a bank of reference resources for both initial learning and longer-term revision. There are 42 pages in the book, and all 500 verbs are listed alphabetically German-English and English-German. Each German verb is indicated by irr; sein; sep for example, to denote irregular, conjugated with sein, separable. I use the reference book for quick vocabulary quizzes too - either I or a nominated student shouts out a German or English verb, with teams giving the corresponding German or English verb - I’ve found this is a really successful way of avoiding more formal vocabulary tests, while still providing students with frequent opportunity to refresh and embed essential German vocabulary. For UK teachers, these are roughly GCSE / Standard / age 16 examinations moving into advanced level, all examination boards (AQA, Edexcel, Eduqas, SQA). We use the Notes and Next Steps template to think about progress and vocabulary knowledge. Students find this really useful, and do like to map and track their own progress. It can be helpful in guiding and informing whole-group discussion about learning and progress in general, which is a really useful learning activity too - students also note down any new German verbs they learn, enabling them to build a really comprehensive verb vocabulary reference resource.
