KS3: Mao's China Lessons

(0)
This short scheme of lessons has been designed for our year 9 students in History, following their study of WWI, the Holocaust, WWI and the Cold War. I have left the resources free of branding/my school procedures so that they can adapted to suit your context. Lesson 1 - Introduction to communist rule in China This sets up how China becomes communist alongside European events (WWI/WWII/Cold War) and the alliance made between China and the USSR. Lesson 2 - Industrial and agricultural changes This lesson focused on the five year plans adopted by Mao and the success/failures of the Great Leap Forward. Lesson 3 - Cultural Revolution and the Culture of Mao This lesson looks at how Mao becomes an icon through the Little Red Book and how the Red Guard were used to subvert Chinese culture and cause terror. Lesson 4 - Social changes for women and the family For this lesson students will look at the changes made towards women under Mao, assessing significant/limited changes towards the social status of women. Lesson 5 - From Mao to modern day China This lesson looks at the legacy of Mao and introduces some key issues in modern day China. This is the shortest of all the lessons and is mostly based on news reports (videos and articles). I plan to edit this further to suit my school’s context, with a growing Hong-Kong population, but I’m conscious this may not relevant all schools/contexts.

Black History Month - Being Black in Weimar Germany Year 9 Study

(0)
I have created a lesson for black history month focusing on being black in Germany following WWI. The intention is to integrate the themed history month into the curriculum rather than have a tokenistic ‘black history month’ lesson that has no relevance to the current scheme of learning. This has been designed for Year 9 to appear during their topic on the Rise of Hitler, but could be adapted to suit your context.

Why were we wrong about pre-colonial Africa?

(0)
This lesson looks to debunk the colonial views of Africa and its people perpetuated by European colonisers. It allows students to explore the justifications for slavery and study conflicting sources to show how European settlers and colonisers warped African history to suit their agenda. The lesson begins with a hook image to discuss views towards people from Africa, the content of the lesson is difficult and can open up genuine discussion regarding racism both in the 18th Century and modern day. This pack includes a powerpoint, researched sources in the form of a handout and a lesson plan to guide you through the material. Answers are provided on the powerpoint which can be edited to suit your school setting.

I have created a lesson for LGBTQ+ history month focusing on being gay in 16th and 17th Century Europe. The intention is to integrate the themed history month into the curriculum rather than have a tokenistic ‘LGBTQ+ history month’ lesson that has no relevance to the current scheme of learning. This has been designed for Year 8 to appear between their topic on Elizabeth I and the English Civil War, but it could be adapted to suit your context.
