Look at cars, vans and lorries. designed to teach pupils about positioning and patterns. Users are given coloured cars, vans and lorries and asked to group them in different ways. Then, using basic maps and plans, pupils are invited to move vehicles from one place to another. They are encouraged to think about how to plan and chart journeys and how to give directions to others.

The Farm takes pupils on a virtual journey of a livestock farm. They see pigs, ducks, hens, horses, cows and sheep. There is a small information screen about each animal and where it lives, and then some activities involving counting animals and matching animals. Pupils can also sing along to the Old MacDonald had a farm nursery rhyme. Learning objectives: to recognise and name different sorts of farm animals, to count to nine, and to listen to and recall a nursery rhyme.

This is an ideal unit to introduce younger KS2 children to maths investigation skills as the patterns are simple to spot. The unit can be used to assess AT1 or as a KS2/3 transition project. This transition project allows pupils to handle data in a real life context. The work is split from Years 5 to 8, with opportunity for groups to revisit the previous year’s results. Year 5 collects discrete data, finds the mode and range and displays the results on an interactive bar graph. Year 6 collects discrete data, finds the mode, median, mean and range and displays their results on an interactive pictogram. Year 7 collects discrete data and displays their data on an interactive scatter diagram. Year 8 collects and analyses continuous data using an interactive reaction timer.

This introduces pupils to times of the day during a school day, including meal times. Pupils follow a short story about a boy called Gwyn as he goes through his daily routine. They have the opportunity to sequence three events of his day and his meal times pictorially and then follow this up in the form of cut-and-stick worksheets. Vocabulary introduced includes: breakfast time, lunch time, tea time, morning, afternoon, evening, night. Desirable outcomes: to begin to understand the idea of time and to sequence correctly.
