New GCSE AQA Physics lesson on 'Radioactivity and Half-life ' written in line with new AQA Physics specification.
Starter poses two interesting questions in relation to a continuous doubling effect linking to the mathematics of the lesson and inverse of half-life.
A quick recap on isotopes and different types of radiation is provided to keep key concepts in pupils minds.
The coin flip (heads or tails) activity is detailed to get students to carry out this activity and collect data to plot the results from to show a 'half-life curve'. Following the explanation of random events the pupils are given the task of recording nuclear decays in relation to video shown on youtube. This then allows a direct link to be made to a half-life graph to nuclear decay. This then leads to the review of half-life graph review questions.
Learning Objectives for Half-life lesson:
1) Review what is meant by isotope and how this is radioactive.
2) Understand the ‘random’ nature of radioactive decay.
3) State and explain what is meant by ‘half-life’.
4) Determine the half-life of different isotopes using given information.

New GCSE AQA Physics lesson on ‘Expanding Universe & Fate of our Universe’ written in line with new AQA Physics specification.

New GCSE AQA Physics lesson on 'State of Matter (Solids, Liquid and Gases)' written in line with new AQA Physics specification.
Lesson Outline:
Starter tasks pupils with drawing particle diagrams of different states of matter. Kinetic theory is review in details for each state of matter. Energy levels of each state of matter are discussed and compared. Students are given a task to act out the different states of matter to model them, this allows for discussion of key concepts that must be communicated and how well the models explain different phenomenon. Changes of states are reviewed to identify the different processes that can occur with change of state including sublimation. A simple experiment shows evaporation and condensation in action for pupils to observe. Evaporation, condensation and sublimation are then discussed in detail. Lesson concludes with review questions and a writing challenge.

New GCSE AQA Physics lesson on 'Melting and Boiling points of substances (changes in states)' written in line with new AQA Physics specification
Lesson Outline:
Starter uses 5 quick question to recap some prior content question some key concepts for the lesson. Pure substances are discussed using a visual game to recognise if a pure substance is being shown or not - leading to a key definition.
Melting and boiling points are then highlighted and linked back to the previous changes of states illustration. Impurities in substances are then discussed to show the importance of pure substances in melting and boiling points.
An experiment to acquire data on melting and boiling points of water is outlined which lead to plotting a change of state graph.
An ideal change of state diagram then allows the teacher to discuss with the class trends and key points along the graph.

Complete lesson on Sound with key content from AQA Physics.
Starter uses simple task to get pupils thinking about how sound can be represented and how these may look like different sounds.
The lesson contains the bell jar and oscilloscope but as these often require a specialist or dedicated time to use links to on-line simulators are included which shows these very clearly and are easy to use.
The on-line oscilloscope allows you to change the frequency and amplitude of an audible sound the class can hear allowing you to question them on the wave changes and effects.
Also included is a short description and discussion of echoes.
End of lesson uses a written task for pupils to summarise the key points on volume and pitch. This can then be peer marked by the class using the guidance provided and then pupils can act on this feedback as homework.

New GCSE AQA Physics lesson on 'Atoms and Radiation' written in line with new AQA Physics specification. Lesson provides a basic introduction to the unit of Nuclear Radiation, ideal for introduction and low ability groups.
Starter prompts pupils to write or draw what they know about nuclear radiation onto a post-it note, this can then be reviewed by the teacher to start a discussion on misconceptions and highlighting good knowledge. A brief background on the discovery of radiation is given in relation to Henri Becquerel and Marie Curie. A simple explanation of nuclear radiation is given with some review of the nucleus and ionising radiation. Detection of radiation is highlight with a Geiger-muller tube and counter. The three types of nuclear radiations are stated and the nature of random nuclear decay is highlighted. The lesson concludes with a fun true or false about nuclear radiation with some videos to offer further explanation where appropriate.
