A fast paced and engaging full lesson providing GCSE 1-9 grades for pupils to self-assess their own work. The lesson begins with a recap of descriptive techniques with a worksheet which pupils can complete individually or in pairs. Pupils then assess exemplar pieces of writing according to the 1-9 framework. The main task pupils will produce their own piece of descriptive writing (describing a chocolate bar) using the example provided. The final task is a structured peer assessment task, where pupils provide feedback for their pairs.

An 8 page hand-out deigned to guide pupils through the process of writing a commentary for their original writing. This includes: a two page guide on how to structure a commentary (including key questions to promote individual analysis); an assessment task where examples of varying grades have been given and pupils have to allocate grades using the marking criteria and self assessment grid to ensure all of the basic frameworks of language have been covered. It is ideally given to pupils before writing their original piece to keep the commentary in mind throughout. An excellent tool to improve students grades with independent study.

Suitable for high-ability KS2 and KS3 classes. The lesson highlights how pupils can vary their sentence openings to engage their readers. Pupils assess the effect of a series of sentence openers, they then break down the differences between the sentence openings through a series of activities, before creating their own story using a stimuli, which has built up from previous activities. A fast-paced lesson with varied activities. Take the work out of teaching with this student led lesson.

The lesson introduces the features of a newspaper article and contains paired and group activities encouraging pupils to investigate structural and linguistic features of articles. Objective 1 (AO2): To be able to identify a simple, compound and complex sentence and discuss their effect. (Lesson 7 in a SOW on animal Welfare) A full lesson detailing to pupils how to identify the features of a leaflet (linguistic and format) and recreate these in a writing task, based on the Edexcel English Language exam. Suitable for KS3 classes and KS4. A recently observed Ofsted 'Outstanding' lesson, with a clear presentation. Suitable for all exam boards but designed for Edexcel English Language Specification (also attached) and grade boundaries from 3-6, which can be altered easily to accommodate HA or LA pupils. The lesson contains a think, pair, share starter. The main activity consists of a pupil led analysis of a leaflets (designed to cover a range of language and structural features) and finally the plenary consists of a peer assessment task (worksheet for this is attached). The entire lesson is very pupil-led, containing fast-paced, engaging tasks. Learning objectives. A05: LO1: Communicate clearly, effectively and imaginatively, selecting and adapting tone, style and register for different forms, purposes and audiences. LO2: Organise information and ideas, using structural and grammatical features to support coherence and cohesion of texts.
