This lesson guides students through analysing the start of A Monster Calls. It is ideal for Key Stage 3 students (although it is designed with Question 2 of GCSE Language Paper 1 in mind). A lesson on Maya Angelou’s poem Caged Bird. The Learning Aim is ‘To analyse the impact of language in a poem.’ It starts by exploring the connotations of the words ‘caged’ and ‘bird’ before moving on to look at the poem itself. The focus is on the presentation of the birds through the use of verbs, but challenge tasks are included which ask students to look at the poem as an extended metaphor of racism in the United States. Students are then asked to write four paragraphs on freedom in the poem.
