To weave a compelling story is indeed an Art in its own kind and with the structured and scaffolded lessons this unit offers, your students will be able to do just that. Lessons in the first part of this unit focus on identifying the structure and features of a narrative. Mini lessons target use of transitions, description, figurative language, and dialogue to control pacing, in addition to effective ways to begin and conclude narratives. The provided narrative writing sample is editable giving you the flexibility to customise this unit to suit your students’ learning needs.
Narrative Writing Part I
IDENTIFYING THE STRUCTURE AND FEATURES OF A NARRATIVE
Lessons revolve around the sample personal narrative, ‘The Storm’. Students will identify the elements of a plot, use of figurative language, transitions, dialogue, and opening, body, and concluding paragraphs. They de-structure the parts of a narrative and note use of interesting vocabulary. An assessment sheet is also provided to assess comprehension. The following mini lessons are included:
USING TRANSITION WORDS AND PHRASES TO MANAGE SEQUENCE OF EVENTS
DESCRIPTION AND FIGURATIVE LANGUAGE TO SLOW DOWN PACE OF STORY
DIALOGUE IN WRITING
ANALYSE A NARRATIVE PROMPT – mini booklet
ORGANISE A NARRATIVE SHORT STORY
DRAFTING AN INTRODUCTION
NARRATIVE WRITING PART II
Students use all the skills acquired in Part I of this Narrative Writing unit to respond to On – Demand Narrative Writing Prompts that require students to write narratives to develop real or imagined experiences or events using effective technique, well‐chosen details and well-structured event sequences. Students have the choice of responding to 7 prompts with visuals. They use the given picture stimulus and graphic organisers to plan their writing and write their first draft. They will be familiar with this, having had ample practice in Narrative Writing Part I of this unit.

MATH LIB ACTIVITY:
My students really enjoyed this activity – I’m sure your students will too! I cut out and laminated the ten task cards. I then tacked them to the wall with Blu-Tac (this way cards don’t get lost if they were left on students’ desks – it also gets students up and moving), Students then write the ratio to solve on their recording sheet, simplify it and look for their answer from the list of options. They write the word against the selected option in the ‘fill in the blanks’ section. The end result is a spooky message. You will find that this is a far more interesting way of answering a multiple-choice question and checking students’ answers. The cards target differentiation.

5. RATIO WORD PROBLEMS
Give your students the experience of solving problems on the topic of Ratio and Proportion with this challenging pack of 54 questions. Students will convert between different units of measurement and read and solve a diverse selection of problems.
SECTIONS INCLUDED:
♦ 24 warm-up problems involving conversion of units from metres to centimetres, dollars to cents, hours to minutes and seconds, kilograms to grams, centimetres to millimetres, litres to millilitres, kilometres to metres,
♦ 30 Word Problems that include a diverse selection of problems targeting differentiation. The ‘Work with the Teacher’ pages help familiarise students with the working-out of the problem so students are able to attempt the ‘Work with a Partner’ pages either with a partner or independently. These pages adopt the same approach to solving the problem similar to the ‘Work with the Teacher’ pages. The word problems are also similar, just featuring different digits to reinforce problem-solving strategies and set up all students for success. The ‘Work with the Teacher and a Partner’ pages would be more suitable for students willing to take on more of a challenge.
♦ Detailed answer key for all problems that can be projected on an interactive whiteboard for explicit teacher explanation.

Got ten minutes to go before that last bell and lost for what to do to keep students busy? Well, this pack of 140 Subitising cards can be a perfect time filler.
Subitising is the ability to look at a number of items in a small set and identify the amount without counting each one individually. Educator, Douglas H. Clement in his article, “Subitising : What is it? Why teach it?”, states that students who develop the ability to subitise show improvement in overall maths skills, especially addition and subtraction skills.
So get your students to not only use perceptual subitising whereby they quickly identify the number of items in a set by perceiving that four dots are more than three dots for example, but are also able to use conceptual subitising that involves the ability to combine small set of numbers or number combinations, for example, six dots and two more make eight in all.
HOW TO USE
Show each card briefly for less than 3 seconds. Students should look at the arrangement of dots and patterns to identify the number. The idea is not to count each dot individually, but look at the items as a whole and determine the number. Explicit training is required so eventually students can combine numbers to find out the sum of two sets of numbers.
Students can also play with each other in small groups. One student shows a card and the fastest to answer keeps the card. You may also have students play ‘Around the World’. Student who answers gets to move around the circle till he/she returns to their spot.
* Instructions for a fun game is included in file.

** Cards are marked with different colour backgrounds and dots for each section. You may mark each section behind each subitising card to differentiate if you like.
CATERING TO DIFFERENTIATION
The cards in this pack range in complexity in terms of number and arrangement of dots in a set. Cards that use perceptual subitising feature less number of dots that are more spread out in a line or rectangle, while cards that require students to use conceptual understanding feature dots that are more tightly arranged in a linear arrangement or placed in a circle. For older students, cards can be shown for a fraction of a second. Research shows that with practice, students will develop the ability to subitise and eventually demonstrate increased arithmetic skill.
If students know their times tables, the work is half done. Think about it, so much depends upon having a good grasp of time-table facts. Problems related to division and multiplication demands strong number sense, so help your students know their multiplication facts with this fun resource.
