Professor Robert Bartlett explores the impact of the Normans on southern Europe and the Middle East. The Normans spread south in the 11th century, winning control of southern Italy and the island of Sicily. There they created their most prosperous kingdom, where Christianity and Islam co-existed in relative harmony and mutual tolerance. It became a great centre of medieval culture and learning. But events in the Middle East provoked the more aggressive side of the Norman character. In 1095, the Normans enthusiastically answered the Pope’s call for holy war against Islam and joined the first crusade. They lay siege to Jerusalem and eventually helped win back the holy city from the muslims. This bloody conquest left a deep rift between Christianity and Islam which is still being felt to this day. Gorbachev and Bush meet at Malta in December 1989 to consider the recent dramatic events. Only the previous week the Communist government resigned in Czechoslovakia; and shortly Nicolae Ceaușescu would be deposed and executed in the bloody Romanian Revolution. Gorbachev permits German reunification and removes Soviet troops from Europe, but fails to secure financial support from the West. As the Soviet economy collapses, Gorbachev faces opposition from both reformers and hardliners. Sharing their abhorence of Soviet disintegration, Gorbachev brings in hardliners to his government and cracks down on the Lithuanian independence movement. However they later turn on Gorbachev and stage a coup. Boris Yeltsin is instrumental in rallying the public and military to defeat the coup. Sidelining Gorbachev, Yeltsin sets the course for Russia to leave the Soviet Union by establishing the Commonwealth of Independent States. The Soviet Union ends on 25 December 1991, and in his Christmas Day address Bush announces the Cold War is over. The cost of the Cold War is considered in retrospect. Interviewees include Mircea Dinescu, Alexander Rutskoy and Condoleezza Rice. The pre-credits scene features Bush and Gorbachev explaining how uncertain the world had suddenly become.

Henry VIII - Inside the Mind of a Tyrant - Ep4. Tyrant - Supporting Worksheet Written to support the David Starkey documentary as enrichment for able GCSE 9-1 students or A level teaching support. Written in Publisher to A3 formatting, but can be amended and saved as a PDF for A4 printing The final programme in the series examines how Henry, having inherited a chronically weak English crown, forged it into an instrument of unprecedented power, and then wielded it to change forever the nature of England and the English. The courtiers who had helped Cromwell dispatch Anne Boleyn hoped that the schism with Rome would now be reversed. They were soon disappointed. The destruction of the monasteries proceeded apace, with the loot flowing into Henry's coffers. But such unprecedented actions caused isolation abroad and rebellion at home. Henry's response showed him at his most duplicitous and ruthless. He lured the rebels' leader to London with the promise of talks and then had him hung, drawn and quartered. Meanwhile, Henry's private life was hardly less turbulent. The death of Jane Seymour robbed him of someone he was genuinely fond of, and who had given him the male heir he craved. His marriage to Katherine Howard briefly rekindled the flames of desire, but her adultery (real, this time) made her another victim of court intrigue. David Starkey's archival research has revealed the full story behind her tragic fate. But as Henry grew older, more ill and more dangerous to all around him, he was busy forging a fiercely independent England, where coastal fortifications and an expanding Tudor navy gave tangible expression to a new sense of national destiny.

This resource can be used to introduce the Medicine Through Time GCSE course. It takes four images through time and encourages students to gain a chronological understanding of the key periods through deconstructing the carefully chosen 4 images. This worked extremely well with my students who were able to use the images to identify continuity and change between periods and make judgements on key questions such as: 1. How was illness explained? 2. How did people try to treat illness? 3. How were the sick cared for? 4. Who cared for the sick? Students need an A3 copy of the word document table and an A4 copy of the picture sheet - ideally in colour. This work can be completed individually or in pairs. I adapted this resource for current year 11 students as a group based revision task - (really well received by both students and other colleagues). I will publish this also.

Written to support the teaching of the Edexcel 9-1 History GCSE the worksheet supports the 1981 US TV version of The Wave. The film is used to explore the reasons for why a totalitarian system was allowed to develop in Germany from 1933 and how individuals, and particularly the young were coordinated. It makes for an alternative way of teaching both the establishment of totalitarianism in Nazi Germany as well as the limits of its appeal and opposition. The worksheet is written in Publisher formatted to print in A3.
