A series of 4 lessons teaching questions 1-5 on AQA Language Paper 1 using ‘The Landlady’ text. All lessons are differentiated using the GCSE mark scheme and aim/challenge/super challenge. Differentiated using aim/challenge/super challenge. This lesson is based around chapter 11 of the novel Boy In the Striped Pyjamas and teaches students about Hitler and how he came to power. Students eventually have a choice of differentiated tasks to complete based around the chapter.

Used as part of the speaking and listening GCSE module but can work as a stand alone lesson to practice speaking and listening skills. Could also be adapted for teaching non-fiction if needed. Lesson starter asks students to write down a funny story that is either truth or a lie. The teacher then collects these in and returns to them for the plenary. The main part of the lesson involves students been allocated a topic and having to work with others to gather information about that topic to eventually present their findings.

Lesson is based around the concept of Room 101 with students being asked to think about their pet peeves and eventually work in a group to present a short presentation on why it should be put into room 101.

Differentiated using aim/challenge/super challenge. Aimed at introducing Chaucer to KS3. This lesson focuses on the character of the Cook and looks at cooking in the Middle Ages.

Lesson is aimed at developing students’ understanding of the General Election. Lesson looks at the history of voting, what happens in a General Election, who the main parties and leaders are & what the main pledges of each party are. Students have a choice of tasks based on speech writing. They can either write a speech arguing that the voting age should be 16 or write a speech arguing which political party should be in power.

Differentiated using aim/challenge/super challenge. Lesson focuses on descriptive writing skills. Main task asks students to create a piece of creative writing from the point of view of Buddy the Elf, experiencing New York City for the first time. Students watch a short clip to help with this and complete planning activities.

A lesson which looks at life in the trenches for soldiers during WW1. Students are given information about trench life including a diary entry and a poem. Students will write a description based on trench life from the perspective of a soldier during WW1. Differentiated using aim/challenge/super challenge.

Differentiated using aim/challenge/super challenge. Students look at structural features then use a series of pictures to structure and create their own stories.

Lesson is part of a series of lessons teaching OMAM but could work as a stand alone lesson. Differentiated using aim/challenge/super challenge. Lesson looks at setting in chapter 1 and links to chapter 6.

Aimed at KS4 GCSE students studying Macbeth as part of their English Literature exam. Differentiated using aim/challenge/super challenge.

Analysing the characters introduced in chapter 2 of Of Mice and Men and how they reflect the difficulties of living during the great depression. Differentiated using aim/challenge/super challenge. Main task eventually asks students to write a diary entry from the perspective of one of the characters.

Lesson is differentiated using aim/challenge/super challenge and mega challenge. Lesson is aimed at a top set year 9 group but can easily be adapted to suit other ability ranges. Lesson looks at racial segregation in 1930’s America and students eventually get a choice of differentiated tasks to complete.
