A fun English game designed for my KS3 class to help them with their creative writing. The board contains a series of 5 prompts which will allow the learner to build their short Science Fiction story: setting, main character, main character trait, main theme and conflict. Give the student a dice piece. They will roll the dice piece 5 times moving from left to right of the board. For example: The first number refers to the setting, the second number rolled refers to the story’s main character…etc… The learner will then write a short story based on what they rolled on the prompt board.

An English Reading Comprehension Skimming & Scanning Activity. A starter activity / worksheet. This would be ideal for E2 - E3 Functional Skills learners and low ability pupils in the KS3 & KS4 age groups. Based on Barack Obama, learners will the short source document before answering six skimming and scanning questions. Answers are provided so learners can self mark.

This is a worksheet that is designed to be used alongside the play DNA. The learner will pick one of the characters from the play and create a Facebook profile for that character. They will fill in all of the information that they know about them from the play and add other additional information of their own. They will also write a status that sums up what that character is feeling at the end of each act in the play. A fun character analysis activity.

A worksheet which will to help learners to identify different language features. This worksheet uses some quotes from Albert Einstein. Learner’s are asked to identify the language techniques used in each quote. Answer sheet is provided.

This is a 5 page booklet where the learner will read two source documents on the following subject: fur farming. They will answer a compare and contrast assessment and will plan their answer by using a Venn Diagram. They will then answer the question which will be worth 3 marks on their exam.

24X Irregular Plural Flash Cards - double sided with polka dot print on one side. These are flash cards which are useful to use with Entry Level 3 learners. In the exam, learners are expected to write the plural form of a word. They will be expected to know a list of common plural nouns that don’t follow the usual spelling conventions. Each singular noun and its irregular plural form is on one of the 24 cards. You could add an extension activity and turn this into a matching game ( match the noun to the plural form). Learners could also create a sentence which includes each word.

This is a 26 page PowerPoint that can be used in the delivery of Functional Skills Reading Entry Level 3. This PPT includes everything learners need to know in order to pass their reading assessment (it is based on the NCFE awarding body criteria). The PPT gives learners an overview of the following: Overview of the reading assessment Skimming & Scanning - Step by step techniques and task worksheet Purpose of a Text- Different purposes of a text - the different purposes that you need to know for your exam, a class matching quiz and a practice exam question Finding the meaning of words - A dictionary task and step by step guide on how to answer this question. 6X colouring sheets with different designs of animals and objects from the book. A resource to use as your class read through the novel. They can rather use them as colouring sheets or as vocabulary word banks ( writing words around the pictures).

This is a 31 page PowerPoint which can be used as an introduce your class to Dennis Kelly’s play DNA. The PPT contains eight separate options that can be used as an introductory lesson to the play. The students are to make predictions about what the play is about and what happens in the play. Front book cover analysis with 9 questions to answer relating to the front cover. Taboo - a word, guessing relating to the play. The objective of the game is for a student to sit with their back to the interactive whiteboard. The other students give the student clues and they have to guess the word on the board behind them. Word Scramble - Instead of the teacher giving students a short summary of the play, students will be asked to find this out for themselves by unscrambling the letters on the board. First Lines - Students will make predictions to what the play is about by reading and analysing the first few lines and answering 6 set questions. Students will watch a short news report which relates to the topic of the play. They will then make predictions about the play based on this report. Headline - play prediction task Pictionary - Each group will be given a copy of identical pictures. The aim is for the student’s group to work together to connect the pictures and try to predict what the play may be about. 5 minutes, 5 facts - Task

2 X A3 Worksheets Summary - A resource to use as your class reads through the novel. After each chapter, get your learners to write a short summary of that chapter. They can also note down any characters that are featured / mentioned in the novel. This can be useful for when learners need to revise the novel and the key scenes. Characters - A resource to help learners identify and analyse the different characters as they read through the novel. They can write down a description of the character and their personality traits.

They can also note down any themes that run throughout the play. This can also be useful for when learners need to revise the play and the key scenes. Settings Worksheet - Get your students to write about how each of the settings /places on the page are connected to the plot.

I created this task for the Poetry Anthology revision lesson. The learners were asked to write a short summary of each of the fifteen poems and write a short overview of the context of that poem on the back of the card. This was to refresh their knowledge in preparation of their mock exams. Four cards per sheet. Print double sided on short flip edge.

This resource has been created for L1 learners. This is a recap session and has a short overview of how to write and structure a report. This was created for my learners after they had learnt how to format the text. This is not a full lesson ( I have a full report lesson available on my online store). Based on the City and Guilds criteria. This booklet has a four activities to help E3 students prepare for their writing assessment. This is not a copy of the assessment and is structured slightly differently. Activity 1: Place the following words in alphabetical order (list of four words). Activity 2: Write the plural of the words in bold (list of four words). Activity 3: Write the correct spellings for the following words (six incorrect spellings taken from the spelling criteria booklet). Activity 4: Writing Activity - write an email to your local food bank to express your interest in volunteering (planning space and writing template included).

This PPT gives an overview of the Unseen Poetry exam. The students are then shown a marking guide for Q1 and will use this to mark three student’s responses: Grade 5 to Grade 9.
