AQA GCSE Geography lesson for the new specification Unit 2A: In this lesson we look at how London’s transport strategy and urban greening have improved the quality of life for people living in London. We start with a retrieval practice grid based on previous learning from this section. We then look at the green transport strategies London is adopting. Using an information sheet the pupils fill in sections on an A3 worksheet. We next look at Crossrail, the pupils consider the reasons why Crossrail was needed and the arguments for and against Crossrail before answering some questions on how it will improve quality of life in London. We move onto urban greening, using a video clip we consider the benefits of urban greening and then the pupils create a “London Eye” pie chart which they annotate to show how London is a green city and how it is continuing its urban greening. Once we have completed the diagram we tackle a 6-mark question on how environmental change have led to an increase in the quality of life for people in a HIC city. The pupils do have some help with some points to get them going if they need it. AQA GCSE Geography lesson for the new specification Unit 1B: In this lesson we examine the distribution of the global ecosystems or biomes. The lesson has an ordnance survey map skills retrieval practice starter quiz. We then look at what a global ecosystem or biome is and what the general pattern of their distribution is. The students complete a cloze exercise and write a paragraph introducing the concept of global ecosystems. The students then complete a colouring by numbers worksheet to familiarise them with the distribution of the global ecosystems. They then complete a worksheet on where these ecosystems can be found, using atlases to give named examples of countries that feature those particular biomes. There is another extension to this where the students create a diagram to show the importance of latitude in the distribution of global ecosystems. We finish with a GCSE-style practice question with some sentence starters and a mark scheme provided for the students. A Key Stage 3 lesson from a climate change unit of work which looks at the causes and impacts of wildfires with a focus on the recent California Wildfires in 2025 and the role climate change has to play in increasing the risk from wildfires. There is a retrieval practice starter followed by an introduction to wildfires. We look at the types of wildfires and sort the causes into human and physical causes. We then look to see if climate change has had an effect on wildfires. There is a video notes sheet to assist with this. We then look at California, the students complete a colouring by numbers task on the distribution of wildfires throughout the state. We then look at the impacts of the 2025 fires and the students sort these into social, economic and environmental. We then sort some responses into short-term and long-term. AQA GCSE Geography lesson for the 2016 specification Unit 1B: In this lesson we look at how rainforests can be managed sustainably at different levels. We start with a retrieval practice multiple-choice task based around the content already learned in the rainforest section of the unit. We establish the definition of sustainable management before then looking at management at the international level. Students explain and rate the three types of action. We then look at some of the problems associated at the government level, students explain why these are problems and offer some solutions. We then look at the local level. Students undertake some guided reading with questions for the text, the students then complete a worksheet that asks them to rate these actions according to several criteria. We then look at the typical features and characteristics of an ecotourist resort and finish with a 4-mark GCSE style question on ecotourism and there is some tips for students who need it on how to answer it. AQA GCSE Geography lesson for the new specification Unit 2A: For this section we use London as our case study. In this lesson we introduce London, it’s location and site factors and its population. We start with a simple quiz about London to test the pupils general knowledge of the capital. We then look at the location of London and the pupils describe London’s location based on the C.L.O.C.K formula. But you could use any method. We then have a look at the history of London before the pupils undertake an ‘art attack’ activity where they are creating an annotated sketch map of the location of London and it’s settlement site factors. We then look at London’s population, looking at general facts, population structure and ethnicity. We finish with a simple GCSE-style question plenary. AQA GCSE Geography lesson for the new specification Unit 1B: In this lesson we look at what how plants and animals have adapted to the environmental conditions in the rainforest. The lesson has a retrieval practice starter to begin with. We then look at what biodiversity is and why the rainforests are particularly diverse. We then look at rainforest stratification and plant adaptations. The students have a sheet to complete and some information slides to use to complete the sheet. This could be used as a carousel or group work task. The sheet can even be coloured in! Then the students complete a mix and match up task on the most common types of animal adaptations. The students then complete a rating task with explanation as to how significant are threats to biodiversity in the rainforest. We finish with a GCSE-style practice question with some guidance and structure provided for the students. We then introduce the idea of the economy with the pupils completing a Frayer model, we then look at where the UK is in international standings currently and where it might be in the future. We then look at the structure of the economy, we remind ourselves of the different sectors with a sorting task and then look at how the UK’s economy has changed over time. The pupils complete a worksheet and complete a pie chart. We then look at the main drivers in this change and the pupils use information sheets/slides to complete a worksheet. AQA GCSE Geography lesson for the new specification Unit 2B: In this lesson we look at the environmental impacts of quarrying in the UK. The lesson starts with a quick true or false retrieval practice quiz with sound effects. We then look at a photo of a quarry and the pupils think about all the impacts the quarry may be having on the physical environment. There are possible answers on the next slide. We then look at ways that industry might be able to become more sustainable. The pupils have hexes and are asked to develop the points further by explaining their potential impacts. There are suggestions on the following slide. We then look at quarrying and Torr Quarry as an example. The pupils have an info sheet and a knowledge organiser to complete with questions relating to Torr Quarry and Quarrying. There is also a video clip on quarry restoration to help with this section. AQA GCSE Geography lesson for the new specification Unit 1B: In this lesson we look at what the physical characteristics of tropical rainforests are. The lesson has a retrieval practice starter quiz on rivers to begin with. We then look at what it is like to be in the rainforest with a short video clip of walking through the forest. We then look at the location of tropical rainforests and the students have a map with some questions of differing difficulty to answer. The students are provided with a worksheet to draw a climate graph of the rainforest with some additional skills questions to answer (works well with a visualiser). The students complete an annotated profile of the rainforest latosol soil, describing and explaining its characteristics. We then look at the nutrient cycle and the students annotate a diagram making sure they eliminate the incorrect word from the annotation. We finish with a GCSE-style practice question with some guidance and structure provided for the students. AQA GCSE Geography lesson for the new specification Unit 1C: In this lesson we look at how the Midlands town of Banbury has managed flood events through a flood alleviation scheme… There is a pre-populated retrieval practice starter grid at the beginning of the lesson. We begin by looking at the location of Banbury and the students construct a description of the location from sentence fragments. We then move onto the historical floods at Banbury and why it needed protection. There is a cloze exercise for the students to complete. We then look at the flood alleviation scheme and the students have a blank map of the area and they use grid references to locate and annotate on the map the feature of the scheme. We then complete a categorising activity on the benefits and issues of the scheme. There is also a 9-mark GCSE-style practice question with some guidance for the students on how to complete it. AQA GCSE Geography lesson for the new specification Unit 1C: In this lesson we look at waterfalls and gorges and how they are formed through the processes of erosion. The starter is a retrieval practice grid filled in for the rivers work so far, but it’s editable. We then look at how underlying geology plays and important part in the formation of waterfalls, the pupils have some questions to answer and I sometimes get a pupil to teach this bit. We then look at how waterfalls develop, after some teacher exposition the pupils will have an outline diagram of a waterfall with some tasks to complete on the diagram. We then look at the formation of gorges and how they relate to waterfalls. This time the pupils use the diagram on the board to create one themselves. We finish with a sketch from photograph of High Force. After we have introduced the waterfall and given some detail on its formation the pupils will create a field sketch either in a blank box, or using a feint outline, which they can draw over the top of. They then label features etc. We finish with a 6-mark question similar to the 2019 May exam on physical processes and waterfalls/gorges. There is advice and guidance should the pupils need it. AQA GCSE Geography lesson for the new specification Unit 2A: In this lesson we look at the emergence of megacities and the reasons for urbanisation. We start with a quick photo starter of Tokyo. We introduce the two concepts of natural increase and rural-urban migration. The pupils have a worksheet to fill in regarding push/pull factors, firstly adding their own ideas, then with some input from the teacher, then they categorise into social, economic and environmental. We then look at megacities, with a introductory video. the pupils then plot the location of the megacities as of 2018 using longitude and latitude coordinates. The pupils then have some extension tasks around their map. We then have a brief interlude to consider what living in a megacity might be like and watch a short clip on Tokyo and living in such a high density population. We then finish with a comparison of a map showing megacities from 1975 and answer a GCSE-style question. We start with a photo of the G7 and the pupils will think about what the organisation is and who is in it. We then consider why countries have built up a large amount of debt. We then look at the pattern of HIPC’s around the globe and the pupils complete a differentiated activity around a map which shows their locations. We then look at how debt relief can reduce the development gap and then onto micro finance with a brief look at the Grameen Bank. The pupil’s using the textbook complete a number of tasks to become familiar with the example such as constructing a climate graph, describing places, finding the meaning of facts and figures, creating a map, defining key words, categorising impacts. The sheets need printing out on A3 paper ideally. We then tackle a question on large-scale water transfer schemes. The pupils have guidance should they need it on how to answer the question and can use their sheet to help them. AQA GCSE Geography lesson for the new specification Unit 1C: In this lesson we look at long and cross profiles of a river and how river valleys change shape downstream. We start with “perfect paragraph”. The pupils read a paragraph describing a drainage basin and they should try to find the errors in the paragraph and what should be added in. We then introduce long profiles, and the pupils will be plotting a long profile of a river on their worksheet. We then look at the upper, middle and lower courses of the river. The pupils shade in these sections on their graph. We complete the worksheet by looking at cross profiles and how river valley shapes change downstream. The pupils create annotated cross sections of the upper, middle and lower courses using the info slides. We finish with a 4 mark GCSE-style question “describe how the shape of a river valley changes downstream”. As always the pupils have some guidance on the question if they need it. AQA GCSE Geography lesson for the new specification Unit 1C: In this lesson we look at erosion, transportation and deposition. The starter is “which row is the odd one out”. The pupils need to work out which row has an incorrect term in. Just gets them thinking. We then look at erosion and when rivers are eroding more effectively. The pupils learn about vertical and lateral erosion and will be making some diagrams in there exercise books. They then receive a worksheet where the processes of erosion and transportation are illustrated, the pupils use an information slide (or sheet if you prefer) and label the processes on and colour code the area of the diagram where that process is displayed. We then look at how these processes vary as you progress down the long profile of a river. The pupils get another worksheet where they read the labels and draw an appropriate diagram in each box to create an illustrated log profile. We finish with a summarising pyramid plenary.
