A full lesson based on the new AQA (B3.7) SOW. This lesson covers the importance of temperature and pH on enzyme activity with given examples. Student understanding is checked with past paper exam questions. The lesson then outlines how the body regulates pH within digestion, and students are again directed to past paper questions. This is repeated for the regulation of surface area (emulsification). All answers are incorporated into the slides allowing for peer assessment. The plenary is based on students reflecting upon their progress against the learning objectives.
A full differentiated lesson based on the new AQA B4.8 SOW. The lesson covers the stomata, diffusion of gases, guard cells and transpiration. Student knowledge is applied to a differentiated question grid with a opportunity to ‘stretch’ towards a PP GCSE question - rewards are useful here! Students then take part in a simple practical where they use nail varnish, tape and microscopes to observe and count the stomata on a leaf, comparing the topside to the bottom side. A video is included to show how this is done but a demonstration is useful here. There is then a review of ‘what the students should of found’ followed by a plenary which encourages students to reflect on their progress against the learning objectives. All answers incorporated into the slides to facilitate self/peer marking and correction
A full lesson based on the Activate 2 (P3.1) SOW but can be used for others. This lesson covers the units of speed, how to calculate speed, distance and time. Student understanding is checked with a simple calculation table and answers are peer/self assessed. The lesson then moves onto averages speed vs. instantaneous speed and relative motion. A differentiated question grid challenge is then used to apply learning and facilitate AFL for peer/self marking. The practical activity involves students calculating the speed of a toy car down a ramp, which can be divided into 5 sections to facilitate the calculation of instantaneous speed within each section. The plenary is based on the students reflecting upon their progress against the learning objectives.
A full differentiated lesson based on the Edexcel SOW but can be used for others. The lesson covers the stages of each cycle, the levels of oestrogen, FSH, LH and progesterone during each stage as well as the function of each hormone. A worksheet exercise and a differentiated question grid are used to check student understanding at separate stages within the lesson. A reflective plenary is included. All answers are incorporated into the slides and timers are used to promote pace.
No planning required.
This lesson is based on the Activate 1 (P2.4) SOW but can be used for others. The lesson begins with the structure of the ear, and how we hear. Students complete their handout of the ear as you progress through the first few slides prior to a summary and correction of answers. There is then a 'gap fill' DART activity to check for understanding. The lesson then progresses to damage of hearing and how we measure sound (dB). The microphone is then compared to the ear, students must then answer a 'focus writing' task where they use their knowledge from the lesson to compare and contrast the ear and the microphone. The plenary is based on students reflecting upon their progress against the learning objectives, and sharing their answers with peers - throwing round a soft toy is a fun way of doing this. All answers/animations/timers included within the slides.
A full lesson based on the new AQA B1.1 SOW. The lesson covers converting units, light microscopes, electron microscopes, calculating magnification/image size, and magnification vs. resolution. Answers to written activities are incorporated into the slides. A practical activity is included where students observe cheek cells and calculate their size - commercial slides can be used to save time or alternatively students can prepare their own. In the case of the latter, this content could fill two 1h lessons.
Complete lesson on inheritance tailored towards the activate scheme. This lesson was used for year 8 but could be used for high ability year 7. All resources included. Animations and timers facilitate green pen 'correction' and keep pace.
A complete lesson for the topic of alternating current, based on AQA P5.1 but can be used for other schemes of work. The lesson is differentiated with stretch activities for more able and support sheets for less able. A practical exercise is included where students use oscilloscopes to investigate a.c. currents. The lesson includes timers to promote pace and power-point animations to facilitate Q/A during the review of each learning checkpoint. Plenary is based on students reflection against the learning objectives.
A full differentiated lesson based on the OCR-A SOW. This lesson was used by myself for an A2 class but the content is simple enough for AS. The lesson covers sigmoidal population growth curves, abiotic and biotic limiting factors, migration and density independent factors. Student understanding is then checked through the use of a differentiated question grid tailored to the lessons LO. Students are then introduced to intra and interspecific competition using examples. The red/grey squirrel example is discussed. Students then apply their learning to 2 exam style questions. The plenary is based upon the students reflecting upon their progress against the learning objectives. All answers are included within the slides facilitating self/peer marking, timers are included to promote pace.
A full lesson based on the OCR-A SOW. This lesson covers predator prey relationships and their population trends. This is followed by a past paper question for students to apply learning . The lesson then progresses to cover conservation, preservation and their importance. A literacy task is then conducted to apply/reinforce learning further. A final past paper question is used for AFL. The plenary is based on students reflecting upon their progress against the learning objectives. All answers are included to facilitate self/peer marking. Timers are included to promote pace.
A full lesson based on the new AQA (C5.2) SOW but could be used for others. This lesson has been prepared for a low to mid range ability. Displacement reactions are introduced through the starter and a short talk, students are prompted to take note of key text highlighted in red. There is then a short scaffolded activity where students must predict whether or not a reaction will occur by referring to the reactivity series. There is then a teacher led demonstration of such reactions, during which students must complete a table handout. Following a review of observations students are taught about carbon and hydrogens position within series during a short talk. Students then apply themselves to questions based on the content of the lesson. The plenary involves students reflecting upon their progress against the learning objectives. All answers are included through animation facilitating self/peer correction during questioning. Timers are included to promote pace. Instruction for the lab demonstration are also included.
This is a full, differentiated lesson based on the new AQA (B4.3) SOW but could be used for others. The lesson includes heart structure, the atria, ventricles and associated arteries and veins. Student understanding is checked by a differentiated question grid challenge. Students then conduct the heart dissection practical, a demo is useful here but a video is included. The lesson then covers coronary heart disease and is followed by a past exam question for AFL. The plenary is based on students reflecting upon their progress against the learning objectives.
This detailed lesson introduces students to the importance of essential nutrients for plant health and growth. Through interactive activities and real-world examples, students learn to identify the symptoms of nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium deficiencies and explore effective strategies to prevent and correct these issues in agriculture. Ideal for fostering a deeper understanding of plant nutrition and sustainable agricultural practices.
Learning Objectives:
Identify the roles of nitrogen (N), phosphorus §, and potassium (K) in plant growth and health.
Describe the visual symptoms of deficiencies in nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium.
Differentiate between the symptoms of each deficiency based on visual cues.
Explain the causes of nutrient deficiencies and recommend strategies to correct them in crop management.
Lesson Highlights:
Starter Activity: Students observe and identify deficiency symptoms (yellowing, purpling, browning) in plants and discuss potential nutrient causes.
Class Discussion: Review of the roles of N, P, and K in plants, focusing on how these nutrients support specific aspects of growth, such as leaves, roots, and resistance.
Deficiency Case Studies: Students analyze specific cases of nutrient deficiencies and discuss practical methods for soil improvement, such as crop rotation, fertilization, and pH management.
Complete Answers and Timed Activities: All correct answers are included for easy facilitation, and timers are integrated to keep activities well-paced and engaging.
Included Materials:
PowerPoint Presentation with nutrient role visuals and deficiency images
Worksheet for identifying and addressing nutrient deficiencies
Answer key for activities and discussions
Reflection prompts to encourage student self-assessment
This engaging lesson package provides students with practical skills to identify and manage nutrient deficiencies in plants, fostering responsible and sustainable approaches to agriculture.
