A full lesson covering specific heat capacity based on the AQA SOW. Students are scaffolded up to using the equation within calculations prior to a practical. The (required) practical follows the AQA SOW but employs voltmeters and ammeters instead of Joulmeters. Awards can be given to students who calculate the closest SHC for aluminium.

This lesson is based on the Activate 2 (P1.7) SOW but can be used for others. The lesson includes the making of electromagnets, increasing the strength of electromagnets and differentiates between permanent and electromagnets. A practical demonstration and a fun think pair and share session are included to maintain student focus. Students attempt a focus mark question based on the content of the lesson and peer assess - this can be used for focus marking. The plenary involves students reflecting upon their progress against the learning objectives, and how they can improve. No additional worksheets required, answers incorporated into the slides for written activities.

A full differentiated lesson based on the Activate 2 (P2.1) SOW but can be used for others. This lesson introduces the Joule and how to calculate kJ's. Energy in different food products are compared by the students with questions and a DART activity to check for understanding. The energy requirements of different activities are then compared prior to a discussion on the balance of energy. Students then take part in a 'beat the grid' challenge answering as many differentiated questions as they can within 10 minutes. A worksheet exercise then takes place to apply and reinforce knowledge based on the content of the lesson. The plenary is based on students reflecting upon their progress against the learning objectives. This lesson includes timers and animation to promote pace, and all answers are included in the slides to facilitate self/peer marking. This lesson also promotes the correct use of literacy and numeracy through the activities included.

This lesson is based on the Activate 2 (P2.2) SOW but can be used for others. The lesson covers the law of conservation of energy, different energy stores, energy transfer and dissipation. Learning is assessed at 3 stages using think pair and share, an energy store match up, and a 4 mark question to answer. Students are scaffolded up to each task, and answers are included to allow self/peer assessment. The practical activity involves 6 small experiments that the students must visit, observe energy transfers and explain their observations within a table. Extension questions are included for those who finish early, again the answers are included within the slides. The plenary involves students reflecting upon their progress against the learning objectives.

A complete lesson for the topic of alternating current, based on AQA P5.1 but can be used for other schemes of work. The lesson is differentiated with stretch activities for more able and support sheets for less able. A practical exercise is included where students use oscilloscopes to investigate a.c. currents. The lesson includes timers to promote pace and power-point animations to facilitate Q/A during the review of each learning checkpoint. A full differentiated lesson based on the OCR-A SOW. This lesson was used by myself for an A2 class but the content is simple enough for AS. The lesson covers sigmoidal population growth curves, abiotic and biotic limiting factors, migration and density independent factors. Student understanding is then checked through the use of a differentiated question grid tailored to the lessons LO. Students are then introduced to intra and interspecific competition using examples. The red/grey squirrel example is discussed. Students then apply their learning to 2 exam style questions. The plenary is based upon the students reflecting upon their progress against the learning objectives. All answers are included within the slides facilitating self/peer marking, timers are included to promote pace.

A complete, differentiated lesson based on the Activate 2 (P2.5 ) SOW but can be used for others. This lesson covers the key aspects of infrared radiation, thermal imaging and the use of foil blankets etc. Student understanding is checked with a differentiated question grid challenge (answers included) prior to a simple practical. For the practical hot water bottles with different covers, different coloured cups ice or heat packs can be used. Students will use a thermometer to record the temperature of each object and then judge how much infrared radiation is given off using the back of their hands. An alternative simple prac is included where students monitor the temperature of black and silver cans containing hot water. This is followed by 'stretch questions' associated with the practical and a plenary designed to encourage self reflection within students in regards to their progress against the learning objectives.

A full differentiated lesson covering the principles of homoeostasis - this lesson is based upon the AQA (B10.1) scheme of work but could be used for others. Stretch activities and support sheets included to support the learning of high and low abilities. Support sheets are literacy and numeracy based for learning checkpoints 1 and 2 respectively. Timers are included to promote pace, and power point animations facilitate Q/A during the review of each learning checkpoint. Class wide AFL can be conducted through a simple ‘hands up’ to indicate mark. The plenary activity is based on student reflection against the learning objectives.

A full differentiated lesson on the topic of the skeleton. The lesson is based on the Activate 1 (B2.4) book but can be used for other SOW. The lesson includes an activity where students cut out bones and assemble skeletons in a pose of their choosing, peer assessment is based on the correct labelling of the bones and creativity of the pose. PowerPoint animations and timers are included to promote peer correction of written tasks and to promote pace respectively. An X-ray based whiteboard quiz is included as a plenary.

A full lesson based on the new AQA (C5.2) SOW but could be used for others. This lesson has been prepared for a low to mid range ability. Displacement reactions are introduced through the starter and a short talk, students are prompted to take note of key text highlighted in red. There is then a short scaffolded activity where students must predict whether or not a reaction will occur by referring to the reactivity series. There is then a teacher led demonstration of such reactions, during which students must complete a table handout. Following a review of observations students are taught about carbon and hydrogens position within series during a short talk. Students then apply themselves to questions based on the content of the lesson. The plenary involves students reflecting upon their progress against the learning objectives. All answers are included through animation facilitating self/peer correction during questioning. Timers are included to promote pace. Instruction for the lab demonstration are also included.

A full lesson based on the new AQA C5.1 SOW but can be used for others. The lesson starts off covering 7 key properties of metals, students are guided to categorise certain properties to metals or non-metals as you work through the slides. Oxidation/reduction in metal ores is then discussed ahead of the meaning and relevance of the reactivity series during a short talk, during which students are prompted to take notes of key points. A demonstration is then conducted where metals are reacted with water and then dilute acid (instructions included). During this demonstration students must determine the order of the reactivity series. The students will then independently attempt questions based on the demonstration they have observed. As a final plenary students will reflect on their progress against the learning objectives. All answers are included in the slides, with animation to facilitate questioning during self/peer correction. Timers are included to promote pace.

Student understanding is checked by a differentiated question grid challenge. Students then conduct the heart dissection practical, a demo is useful here but a video is included. A simple practical is included where students investigate the indentation of weights within sand when applied on a different numbers of supports. The lesson uses the plague to incite interest (first 2 slides) and then moves onto the work of Ignaz Semmelweis (literacy exercise taken from other TES author). The lesson then briefly discusses other important discoveries and ways to prevent the spread of communicable diseases; hygiene, destroying vectors, vaccination and isolating infected individuals.
