This lesson introduces learners to determinants of wages in competitive and non competitive markets. We start by asking how wages are determined and of course talk about footballers wages as a way to stimulate students into this topic. We look at diagrams including impacts of minimum and maximum wages. Video case studies on current labour market issues such as gender pay gap to stimulate discussion. This double lesson introduces learners to factors which influence the growth and development of a country. There are quite a few factors on the specification so this could be delivered as a student-led task to research two factors per pair. We then feedback what students have found out but also go through each factor on the board to fill in any gaps in knowledge or clear misconceptions. This triple lesson brings together students’ understanding of macroeconomics from the whole course with a focus on fiscal, monetary and exchange rate policies, as well as supply side policies and direct controls. This could be delivered in a student led way, students present what they’ve learnt back to the class and then go through the slides and fill in any gaps in knowledge. We start by looking at the difference between automatic stabilisers and discretionary fiscal policy with relevant examples and a consolidation task. We then go on to distinguish between deficits and national debt, with easy charts to deepen understanding of the UKs position over time. This double lesson builds on learners understanding of market failure from year 12, but now we focus on failure in the financial sector. A very interestesting topic due to the application of the financial crisis. We start by recapping what market failure is and how banks fail. We then look at the 2008 financial crisis to understand what happened. Examples of different market failures are given, video case studies to help students contextualise.
