Writing with a voice, with audience in mind and for a purpose is the most crucial change in the new English framework. See the document to know how to teach the difference between audience and purpose. Teachers have been given examples from the year 2 units of work in this document. It explains how to do a Tweak it Task to show the purpose of writing can change from entertainment, to inform, or to instruct. For example, here is a narrative of an adventure story- now change it to instructions on how to go on an adventure - (the purpose here has changed - and this will effect word choices, tone, structure of writing). Non-fiction labels and captions or narrative text - familiar settings.Retell and sequence. Describe the main character Sam or Jeremy. Write a list of rules for the bully Jeremy to follow. Write a letter to Sam advising him how to behave if someone is mis treating you or bullying you inside school, in the playground, or out of school. Link the story to Anti bullying week. Make a rosette from Jeremy to Sam as a good will gesture. The main characters (jeremy, sam, old lady, park keeper) can be made into stick puppets to role play the story successfully.

Charlie Super hero Underpants is a complete bundle and unit of work with planning and differentiated resources. This is an excellent story for reluctant boy writers. You will find three examples of Exemplar text that can be used as a model piece of writing for students to learn in the imitation stage. The newspaper recounts are set in the context of the story as well as other examples, related to sports day and a made up news event about a fox invading sports day. The children will be able to design their own superhero, write recounts or news, and also be able to make inventions linked to whatever is happening in school or around the world. Newspaper templates have been provided. Great for meeting new English curriculum expectations - wriitng for different purposes.

Ice Palace poetry planning Text PPT to show dialogue between old lady and Ivan Free Verse Example text This resource is for teaching pupils to write poems inspired by characters in a book. This resource helps pupils to write a free verse using inspiration from the old lady that helped Ivan on his quest. It encourages pupils to use personification, patterned text structures, and use their imagination. Year 2 Planning with differentiation and high order activities for literacy to support the new English curriculum. This is a suitable activity for creative writing in the traditional stories unit or as a short write for character description. Children will have the opportunity to develop and use expanded noun phrases, similes, suffixes, contractions and conjunctions to extend ideas and sentences. A good extension for year 2 is to incorporate a twist in the story and so the good characters (the three billy goats) become bad and the troll becomes good. Can be used before or after the little red riding hood unit also available by the same author on TES. There is also a grammar features success ladder included. It is designed for children to be able to self assess and peer assess when editing, and up-level their own work to meet the expected standards. Suitable for year 2 to achieve 'at' and beyond - Greater Depth standard in writing.

Instructional writing about how to grow peas -differentiated for working below, working at and working at greater depth. Good examples of all grammar features included, such as varied sentence types, and varied punctuation. Can be used for cross -curricular work in science topic or as an additional text type to teach the features of instructional writing to children during guided reading. The instructions have been organised into paragraphs with visuals and differentiated for learners. There are also comprehension questions attached so that children can demonstrate greater understanding of the text.

Punctuation signs with corresponding bands for each band. Includes supporting vocabulary e.g when each punctuation should be used e.g commas in a list or apostrophe for possession or apostrophe for words with contracted form. This is an excellent visual and reminder for students and will support children to work at the expected band and at greater depth in KS1 and above. Excellent way of children self assessing and or editing. Can be easily adapted to suit all key stages. Very bright and engaging resource. Useful to be laminated and arranged to look like a pyramid. Band 2 Working below: full stop at the top of pyramid. Band 2 Working At: full stop, question mark, exclamation mark and apostrophe for contraction. Band 2 Greater Depth: as above including apostrophe for possession and commas in a list.

SPAG Rainbow Writing Code supports the Year 2 Grammar Washing Line. Please see the shop. The code is to support children to edit their writing using the same colour each time. They locate each grammar feature in a given exemplar text and use colour pencils to identify them and/or underline them. Over the year the children can self assess and peer assess using this rainbow grammar code. Eventually, by the end of the year, the aim is for the children to be able to identify all the writing grammar features in their own writing or up level it and edit if they haven’t. VCHOP stands for Vocabulary, Conjunctions, Handwriting, Openers and Punctuation. This resources supports the new National Curriculum for 2014 English Writing objectives.

Activities suitable for Year 2 and Year 3. Grammar features to suit the new curriculum have been included such as using expanded noun phrases, suffix endings- ier, subordinating conjunction 'if'. This is a 31 page powerpoint with lots of ideas about how to write a poem, character description, use grammar features and include cross curricular links like Art. This document is to support teachers with feedback and marking. There is an example Powerpoint of good quality feedback and the pedagogy behind it - with children's work, next step marking, self assessment ideas and positive feedback language. There is also a bank of 'Next Step Marking' ideas that have been created to support teachers in their feedback to children that allow independence in revising their work. If marking is over explicit, then parts of the writing may be disqualified. It is highly recommended not to over mark and train children to understand teacher feedback e.g. Use varied sentences for effect on the reader/audience (means that the child has to use questions, commands, statements and exclamatory sentences). The detail in brackets is displayed in the classroom and given as verbal feedback to child. They then go away and improve their writing accordingly. This documents will give you more open bank of statements to use in your next steps (so moderators can't say the feedback was too explicit), and not use that piece of work as evidence for the child meeting the expected criteria (or above greater depth). Into the Forest by Anthony Browne Year 2 Guided Reading This is a guided reading three week unit for children who are working at the expected level. This book is a great visual story to compliment any English journey linked to traditional stories or forest themes. There are clear planned questions that include literal, inference and evaluative questioning. There are also accompanying grammar and response activities included for all weeks to support a carousel activity format of teaching guided reading in class. This resources supports the new national curriculum for English and Reading in Year 2.
