I am currently a Head of Modern Languages in a large secondary school in the North East Of England. I also work with the local University with PGCE MFL students, an area of my work I thoroughly enjoy. I am passionate about teaching and learning, and have a particular interest in the teaching of grammar and of literary texts to develop reading, writing and listening skills. I am currently working on developing a range of resources to support the study of Le Petit Nicolas and the series of books.

French Sounds and phonics

This is to help students with pronouncing and recognising various sounds , which they may find hard. Parts are highlighted to support students in recognising patterns. My year 8 enjoyed this, even year 10, dead simple, but works. Tried and tested !

Just a bit of a revamp from ' spécial vacances' to support less able students, with opportunities to work on literacy through vowel gaps, pronunication and words snake, to learn the conditional and help in achieving levels 5. Use and adapt as you wish.

using building blocks in order to develop speaking and writing, I have used and adapted the middle slides ( to be completed on mini whiteboards ) from a resource found on here and added learning outocmes and models for each level. Levels are referring to styles and levels of support used by students, rather than just using the tenses, I do explain that for level 5, a tense would be preferrable , like for a C at GCSE a tense or an attempt at it is preferred.

Used with a year 8 group to teach them the future, tried to offer slides and worksheets with this to get them thinking about the construction, rather than me telling them.

This is to help students to learn the good higher grages habits. the test sheet can be used as a starter activity, lesson by lesson, to support students in retaining and understanding how to extend and develop writing and speaking. The test sheet can also be used to help students adapt to their own sentences. My year 10s really found it useful, I hope you do too. !

This can be used either as a support grid in lessons. I have also cut out all the different tables, laminated them and from the verb pattern sheet. I then offer students options to choose which tense they need the most help with, then they get the card for the whole lesson, or part of of the lesson. Tried and tested !

This is to support students with tenses and recognising patterns. This can be used a a support sheet or you may decide to cut out the grids and laminate and ask student to choose the cards with the tenses they need the most help with. I will add another resource with the conditional, and even some simple phrases using the subjunctive to stretch the more able.

a sequence for teaching listening

Designed and used this using listening strategies. The cards on one of the slides with the pictures of anilamls need to be cut up and laminated ( for keeping ) and given to students. This is to help them concentrate and focus on what is necessary to listen out for ... it normally works well at Key Stage 3 but I also used it early in y10 , you can make everything harder !

Use with the timers for competition, use without and wait for students to give appropriate answers on mini whiteboards, great for revision for all Key Stages, I made them over time and can add more, feedback welcome ( favorites are normally the snakes and ladders )

with the audio file. The first activity can be used as a card sort for students to place the text in order as they hear the song. The 3 remaining worksheets are for differentiation- gap fill with no help, gap fill but verbs in the infinitive have to be placed in the imperfect and gap fill with students selcting the correct verb in each line.

I found this which I created about 4 years ago ! Thought I'd share this as it brings good memories of my previous school, summer periods and welcoming the year 6 in our mFL department. Please amend for your own use and do what you want with it, I used a mini soft ball as well etc.. card sort etc.. I have added the story, apologies for leaving it late for those who asked, you can exploit this in many ways, listening for gist then reading for gist etc..
