I am a Science and Chemistry teacher focused on Cambridge IGCSE and AS/A. I am also heavily involved in the National Chemistry Olympiad program. By way of background I have a PhD in inorganic chemistry and entered teaching after 13 years in the food industry. I guess I am a bit old fashioned - I don't use twitter and I have no idea what instagram or Pinterest are......but I love my subject and I love working with students.

Electricity-2: circuits, calculations and some structured questions

(0)
This resource consists of two 4-page worksheets (and answers). The first w/s asks the student to interpret some series or parallel circuit diagrams and calculate either I, V, R or P. The second w/s starts with some simple calculations but finishes with short-answer questions in which the student needs to reason (rather than reach for the calculator) an answer. It encourages students to write WHY rather than just supply a simple number. 15 August 2016: an error has been found in one of the problems in the "......diagrams and calculations" ws answers. This has now been corrected.

Biology: Scientific English for Chinese Students - Ecology

(0)
This resource consists of * 2 worksheets with 3 pages of science terms we use to discuss and describe aspects of ecology. The student is asked to either fill in the correct English word or Chinese word when the opposite word is given. * A crossword (and answers) that uses some of the English words in the above worksheets * A worksheet in English with missing words that the student must fill in (answers are provided). My students tell me they enjoy using these resources because they can use them as references afterwards rather than gluing in their book and forgetting about them. The students also enjoy drawing pictures to help them learn these words. If you find any mistakes please contact me. The Chinese words have been checked by a native speaker though he is does not have a science background.

Tongan-English Science words used in physics and practical laboratory lessons

(0)
This resource contains key words that Tongan students will need to learn if they are to manage science lessons in physics and laboratory practical sessions. TESOL teachers will note that direct word for word translations are not easy and often multiple words are needed to explain a concept. I have used a Tongan teacher to help me with the translations. A key strategy I use is to ask the students to draw diagrams to help them explain what they mean.

Science: Ice cream topic -designing, making and tasting ice cream (12-15 year old)

(0)
This is the perfect topic to end the year on. It is fun and the students don't even realise there is a serious aspect to it: healthy eating, analysing food etc. You can adjust the depth and type of learning outcomes depending on the age group (eg. if it is an older group I always include a section on microbiology and we swab surfaces and check for cleanliness, learn about how factories manage food safety etc). This topic encourages student-led learning and there is considerable enthusiasm in the classroom. You do not need to have an ice cream machine, although I did and there is often someone in the class who does have one). I have written up a rough guide on how the 1-2 weeks would go but I found that the students really enjoyed their own research and in some years this took longer than I originally had planned for. This resource includes: notes for teacher, a base ice cream recipe, ice cream in a bag activity, taste testing template, energy calculation activity and some other ideas (eg poster design). It is a lot of fun and will save you that painful end of year "now what do we do"?

Science: Tongan - The English words used in Astronomy lessons

(0)
This resource consists of the list of key words used in Astronomy lessons (15-17 years old). Tongan students often come to Australia or New Zealand for further education but do not have support outside the TESOL class in terms of key Science words. Would you believe there is no word for spring tide? It requires a lengthy description. It is examples like this one which help illustrate why Tongan students often struggle in the English dominated classroom. Some cloze-style problems and a word finder are also included. Topics include tides, seasons and phases of the moon. This resource would help NZ students who are studying the Internal assessment AS 90954.

Chemistry: Easy and difficult weak acid-base calculations

(0)
This resource contains 9 pages of detailed notes and worked examples as well as a 2-page worksheet that contains some straight forward pH calculations as well as some very challenging calculations due to the weak acid not being so weak. The detailed notes work though a variety of scenarios and some of the associated misconceptions. The notes would be useful for both new chemistry teachers and students. This resource would be suitable for A level students. It will also be useful for those interested in continuing in chemistry or entering the National Chemistry Olympiad competition. Key words: buffer, pH, calculation, acid, base

Chemistry: Periodic table made fun (12-15 year olds) - material for 3-4 weeks worth of teaching

(2)
This resource consists of all of the material a teacher would need to teach a 3-4 week topic on this most delightful of topics: the Periodic table. Most of the focus is on the PT trends, how it can be used to predict a property of an element or charge on an ion. The activities have been tried in my class over the past few years and the students feedback and improved grades suggest they add value. My bug bear as a Chemist is that the PT is often taught as "first 20 by rote" with little time spent showing students how they can use the PT to help answer questions or solve problems. The topic covers subatomic particles, electron configuration, formation of ions, compounds/molecules, reactions of group 1 and 2 metals with group 6 and 7 non-metals and the tests for H2, O2 and CO2. Resources include worksheets, cloze activities, starters, projects, identifying equipment activity and short tests. The “notes for teachers” outlines how I teach this subject for both low and higher ability students along with ideas of the projects I set the students. Some documents contain more than 1 worksheet or activity and some worksheets are 2 pages long. Additional slides have been included on balancing equations if the class is stronger. Either use them in this course or save for the following year. Some of this material appears in other resources at Drogchem's shop (eg balancing equations and funworders). Thank you to everyone that bought this resource. If you get a spare 2 minutes could you leave some feedback? It is the only way I will know whether it meets your needs or what I might need to do to develop it further.

Genetics for yr 15-17 year olds

This resource includes a colour-coded power point pack (51 slides): the first half focuses on inheritance and how information is ultimately coded into proteins. The 2nd half covers sexual vs asexual reproduction, genetic variation, mono-hybrid inheritance, punnett squares, pedigree charts and natural selection. The slides are kept simple and are not cluttered with lots of words. The user can delete slides not required for their specific course. My students tell me the slides are easy to annotate and are very good for exam preparation. A set of learning objectives (SLOs) is given as well as three 2-page problem sheets that focused mainly on punnett squares and pedigree charts (answers provided). Two of the problem sheets can be bought separately from this shop ("Biology: punnet square problems and interpretation of pedigree charts"). Thank you to everyone who has bought this resource over the past year. If you have a spare 2 minutes could you please leave some feedback? This will help me refine or add to what I have published.
