A pack of twelve non-chronological report resources, including vocabulary, features, planning and writing sheets and activities, themed around humpback whales. The following resources are included: Humpback Whales Vocabulary Vocabulary about humpback whales. This resource can be used in two ways to familiarise pupils with the subject specific vocabulary: 1) cut out and match the words, definitions and images; 2) use as a word mat during the planning and writing process. Humpback Whales Vocabulary Wall Display Display the key words and matching images around the classroom with this resource. Identify Features: Tense and Sentence Types Pupils identify different sentence types and tenses from an example introduction and Did you know? section from a non-chronological report about giant pandas. With answers. Humpback Whales Matching Sentences Match the beginning and ends of sentences about whales. This activity makes pupils familiar with the sentence structure of a non-chronological report and facts associated with whales. They then order the sentences, identify the relative clauses and finally write about humpback whales. With answers. Re-Order Sentences Elephants Organise the sentences about elephants into the appropriate section. Then order the sentences to make a paragraph. With answers. A character sort activity involving the main characters in the book The Butterfly Lion by Michael Morpurgo. Pupils must sort the cards to match the name of the character, a brief description, a picture of the character and a quote about the character from the text. The activity can be made less challenging by removing one of the categories, such as the quotations, from the sort. The number of characters can also be altered to suit the needs of the pupils. The activity can be carried out in small groups, pairs or individually. This resource is a useful reminder to pupils about the names and roles of the characters in the story to help pupils to understand the novel as they read. The characters are listed in order of appearance in the novel and split onto three separate groups, so that teachers can choose which characters to include in the sorting activity, avoiding spoilers. • Group A: Chapters 1 and 2 • Group B: Chapters 3 and 5 • Group C: Chapter 7 This resource comes as a PDF and as an easily editable Word document. An example character profile text about Rwandan refugee Christophe from the children’s novel Christophe’s Story by Nicki Cornwell. This exemplar character description of Christophe is perfect to use as a WAGOLL. The model character profile comes with a feature identification worksheet for children to fill in, plus answer sheet. After identifying the features of the text, pupils write their own character description of Christophe, Jeremy, Miss Finch, Babi, Greg or another character using the differentiated Character Profile Templates (also included).
