11+ Creative Writing

This is a 130 page book packed with everything a young learner needs to smash the 11+ creative writing section of selective entry exams. 11+ tests (and other selective entry tests, as well as GCSE English) typically require candidates either to produce a piece of descriptive writing, based on a picture or prompt, or to write a narrative. This book covers both types of writing: it contains all the key elements that the young learner needs to be able to master the 11+ creative writing component, including: basic elements of composition (sentence construction, parts of speech) clauses punctuation language devices (similes, metaphors, personification, etc.) ‘show don’t tell’ imagery plot setting narrative tension characterisation There are also annotated exemplars, descriptive writing scaffolds, exam tips and over 30 exercises to allow learners to practise their skills. Answers are provided at the back of the book. Like my 11+ poetry books, it has been written principally with 11+, 12+ and 13+ students in mind, but the book is not limited to this cohort and will be useful to all children in the 9 – 15 age bracket who need to develop their creative writing skills. The book is available on Amazon. I am able to sell it more cheaply here as a PDF due to not having to pay Amazon print fees.

Introduction to clauses - conjunctions, main & subordinate clauses

(0)
This is a set of 30 carefully and colourfully created PowerPoint slides introducing clauses. As a teacher, I have often found that students further on in their education lack a solid understanding of this basic element of English. A good understanding of how this building block of sentence formation works is essential for clear and coherent writing. The slides start with basic principles, but slowly move on to more advanced aspects of clauses. The resource covers: Subject & predicate Main & subordinate clauses Co-ordinating conjunctions Subordinating conjunctions Common errors (including punctuation, comma splicing & run on sentences) Conjunctive adverbs (however, therefore, furthermore) Relative clauses The resource comes with 5 error-correction worksheets with a total of 50 questions to test student understanding. An answer key is provided. As always, if you have any questions about this resource please ask away. Linguistic devices poster & worksheet with examples and activities

(0)
This document includes a two-page poster with 18 of the most commonly used linguistic devices including a definition and statement of effect or purpose and a worksheet with examples and activities to assist understanding and retention. When teaching linguistic devices I have been struck by how quickly students forget them and / or mix them up. Often they are able to name the devices but are not as able to grasp the intended use or effect on the reader. For that reason I have found it useful to have a poster on the wall covering the main devices and to reinforce understanding with activities such as the ones here. The first activity is one where students are given the device name and have to provide a definition and statement of effect / purpose, together with an example. The second activity is one where students are given a definition and have to match that with the appropriate name from a box below. The third activity similarly has students matching an example of the device in use with the appropriate name. At the end of the document there is also a list of sample sentence stems which students can use when performing analysis. I am always happy to receive feedback as to how these materials worked for you. If you have any questions or problems with the materials please let me know and I will seek to address them as soon as possible. All materials are proofread twice but if you do come across any mistakes or typos just leave a comment so I can amend and update. Thanks.
