The perimeter is the total of all the side lengths of a shape added together and the area is the amount of two dimensional space a shape occupies. In this lesson, students will work on the objectives:* recognise that shapes with the same areas can have different perimeters and vice versa and recognise when it is possible to use formulae for area of shapes*.
In this lesson, students will learn how to calculate the area and perimeter of rectilinear shapes, understanding how formulae can be used. They will work on finding the area of real life buildings to help put their learning into real life context during the teaching input through an engaging power point presentation.
They will then complete activity sheets which require them to find the area and perimeter of rectilinear shapes through reasoning and problem solving. Three differentiated levels are provided as well as answer sheets.
Duration: 2 hours.

They will be given detailed explanations for each phase as well as what the surface of the Moon looks like as a map. They will then match up descriptions with each phase and will create their own Lunar Cycles using potato prints.

This lesson will cover the objective: multiply one-digit numbers with up to two decimal places by whole numbers. Students will first be taught how to use the column and grid methods to complete these calculations and reminded of the importance of place value. They will then practise using these methods on simple calculations and word problems.
Differentiated worksheets are provided which require students to first work out calculations mentally, then use the methods learnt with simple calculations and then with word problems. By the end of the lesson they will have consolidated their understanding of multiplying decimals by integers and been challenged to do so in context.
Answers are provided for the worksheets.

In this lesson, students will look at examples of reversible physical changes and irreversible chemical changes involving reactants and products. They will categorise different changes accordingly and will learn what indicators to look for to determine whether something is an irreversible change.
Using the experiment proforma sheet, they will carry out four different irreversible change experiments and will discuss their observations before being given scientific explanations for each. Finally, they will carry out a quiz on what they have learnt.

The Hobbit, or There and Back Again is a children’s fantasy novel by English author J. R. R. Tolkien. The Hobbit is set within Tolkien’s fictional universe and follows the quest of home-loving Bilbo Baggins, the titular hobbit.
This lesson looks at how authors can build tension and suspense in their writing with a focus on The Hobbit. It looks specifically at the part when Bilbo meet Gollum in the cave. Presentation, lesson plan and resources included.
Students look at a poster slide detailing different ways authors build tension and suspense and then come up with their own examples. They then identify these techniques in an extract from chapter 4. They read the rest of the chapter, illustrating the levels of tension from main events on the graph. Finally, they write the part when Bilbo meets Gollum after watching a clip and reading the start of chapter 5 and write their own narrative of the scene.
