The Challenge This Code Breaker Challenge is made up of 4 challenge sheets, each containing three sets of questions about subtraction as well as an instruction section written in code. There is also a final challenge sheet for obtaining the master lock key. The Setup Ideally, the Code Breaker Challenge requires a box which can be locked with four three digit combination locks and one padlock. See the attached picture as an idea for the setup. It could however be done without this, but wouldn’t be quite as fun for the children. How to Use Fill the box with treasure, for example some sweets and then setup the combinations on each of the locks and lock the box with them and the master lock. Split the class up into four teams and provide each team with one of the challenge sheets. Start a timer of approximately 30 minutes (depending on the ability and age of your class). Each team works together to solve the challenge and tell the teacher the three digit code. If they got it correct, they may open their lock. If not, then they will need to check their answers. Once all four combination locks have been opened, or even after the first team has finished, provide the master lock challenge. If they complete it correctly and within the time, they can then have the master lock key to open the treasure box. Great Fun! The children absolutely love the Code Breaker Challenge and we repeat it at the end of every major maths unit. They really need to work together and check their work carefully if they are to succeed in opening the box and retrieving the treasure within. The idea for this worksheet is that the children select a country from Africa to research and fill in the geographical facts. For example, population, capital, languages, land area, currency, religion etc. There is also a space for drawing and colouring in the flag and the background of the worksheet is a map of Africa, so children can also draw an arrow and/or colour in their chosen country. The worksheet helps children gain a broader perspective of the world and a chance to compare to their own country. It’s also a great starting point for a more in depth study of a particular country. The document is fully editable so you can change any information you please.

This worksheet includes a world map (with country borders), a key for ten places and a compass. Students can use it to help improve their locational geographic knowledge of ten different countries around the world. Using an atlas (online or traditional) they can find a particular country and then colour it in on the map using the key to identify it. Once completed they can easily cover up the key and use it to self-assess or assess their friends. They can also add the compass directions on at the bottom as a further additional activity.

This is an snazzy looking quiz template which is made up of a title page, question numbers pages, question pages (with one minute timers) and answer pages. It is fully editable and perfect for quickly adding your own questions and answers for a pop quiz or end of unit test. The timers only start when you click them so you can give the children a chance first before starting them or you could just start them straight away, depending on how much time you think they may need.

This fun puzzle involves children using Google Earth to find a specific letter of the alphabet. All the letters are made-up from different features on earth such as buildings and rivers. Each coordinate leads to a different letter. Once the children have recorded the letter, they can zoom out to find out and record what country it is in. Once they have all the letters, they have to rearrange them to make up the mystery word. You can see all the answers by selecting the text in both the country and letter columns and changing the text colour. They are hidden in plain sight, so don’t forget to remove them if you are setting this as a document online. This could either work as an individual competition - see who can find all the places in the quickest time. Or it could be done as a collective effort - the whole class working to find the different places before the time runs out. Children and adults alike really enjoy this activity! Extension ideas: a) Have the children find their own letters around the world, or for more difficulty, in their local area. b) Use the snipping or Print Screen (PrtSc) tool to copy images of letters and spell out a name or even a phrase.

This document is made up of 40 different cards (4 fact cards for each of the 8 planets in our solar system). Please see the preview for insight on the variety of different facts. Ideally, print on A3 and cut up the cards. The idea is for children to match the facts up to the correct planet. They could also put the planets in order from the sun as an additional task. I find this best suited to groups of 3-4 children so print off enough copies for your class. It works well as a starter to a unit on space but also could be used during or at the end to see how much they have learned. If you can, laminate the cards for future use. The first part of this A3 board game document is based on Snakes and Ladders. The board is fully editable, with the ability to type in the spaces as well as move around the snakes and ladders. The second part of the document contains the same board, but this time with question mark spaces and fully editable question cards to use with it. This way, the board game can be used in a variety of different subjects. Children really love using the board games to review topics. I’ve used it in English, science and maths as well as other subjects. The ability to answer a question allows the student to roll the die again and the snakes and ladders add that extra element of fun and luck to the game. Children can use anything as counters in the game. We usually have a mishmash of coins, pencil sharpeners and erasers. As you can see from the preview, the board game itself is very colourful. This PowerPoint based activity is made up of 12 numbered tiles which when individually clicked on will reveal a question behind them. When a student or group gets the correct answer the question tile can then be removed to reveal a part of the picture hiding behind. It’s perfect for Book Day or even as a warmer for a reading lesson. All the questions relate famous children’s books. Please take a look at the previews to see the questions. The game is fully editable, so with a few clicks, (instructions in the PowerPoint), you can change the content as you please and use it for any question from any topic you like! I usually split the class up into teams for this and let them have one collected guess at the picture if they answer a question correctly. The first team to correctly state what book the picture is about, are the winners.

On this A3 worksheet, children create a key and colour in the countries on the map of Europe. Except for the map, this document is fully editable. Instructions: a) Select and write down the names of 15 countries, found in Europe, in the key below. b) Assign a different colour for each country and then colour in the corresponding location on the map of Europe. c) Mark on either the names of the oceans and seas, or some of the capital cities. You could also have the children draw on famous human-made or natural landmarks.

This art/maths crossover is designed to be used online as a Google Doc. It could still be printed out though. It’s made up of a 10x10 grid in which children have to create a pattern or picture (with the Google Doc background changer) using six different colours. Once they have created their art, the second job is to identify the fractions of each of the colours they used in making it. It’s a fun way to connect maths and art and let’s the children create pixel type art. Expect a lot of Minecraft related stuff to be handed in! Finally, it’s great for use in Google Classroom where every child gets their own copy. You can then easily check their individual progress live and then check their results.

This worksheet comprises of a fill in the blanks paragraph all about electrical conductors and insulators, a space for a experiment setup diagram and a results table. The children are expected to complete the fill in the blanks activity first. You could help them out by providing a word bank on the board/projector. They should then draw a circuit which will enable them to test the conductivity of different materials. For this you will ideally need some batteries, wires and either a motor, LED or Light bulb. I usually have children work in pairs for the experiment but complete their own worksheet. This worksheet comprises two parts. The first is a fill in the blanks section where ideally the children test objects using a light source and fill in with the help of the words from the table. The second part can also involve some testing done throughout the day or could be done after the fact. It involves drawing where the sun would be at different times of the day and then drawing an object and its corresponding shadow. Children learn about the ways that a shadow can be affected and how and relate it to the shadows of objects caused by everyday objects blocking light from the sun. As an extra fun activity, have the children draw around their own shadows at different points during the day. Odd One Out - 10 rows with the option of putting 4 words in, with one being the odd one out of the group. Students have to identify the odd one out by circling it.
