After 12 years in industry, I took a leap into FE teaching Vehicle Maintenance & Repair in an FE college in the UK. I found the resources available to me as a new teacher were dated, and not particularly engaging to my students so I started to learn PowerPoint. After 6 years in a teacher role, I left the position but still want my resources to be of use as after those 6 years, I think they are pretty good quality. Hopefully they can be of use to others teaching a Motor Vehicle college course.

This PowerPoint covers health and safety and was made for the start of Level 1 Vehicle Maintenance and Repair course. There are 38 slides in total and makes use of the animations the PowerPoint offers. This lesson covers HASAWA, RIDDOR and COSHH. If you teach the IMI course, I made this specifically to cover L1MV01 & L1AM01 but essentially covers H&S in the workshop and how to work and use equipment safely.
Be sure to use the slideshow feature or you’ll have a lot of overlapping images.
There are some slides that require answers to be revealed by clicking on the pictures or text - I have pointed these out in the slide comments.
I have also included a worksheet to accompany the lesson that can be printed out for students to complete, or sent to them via e-mail to complete on word.
I teach levels 1 up to 3 of Vehicle Maintenance & Repair at a further education college in the UK delivering the IMI vehicle qualifications.
I found the resources available to me when I started pretty poor and didn’t engage the students particularly well, so I made my own set of PowerPoints that cover pretty much all of it so far, so thought i’d share some of them up here and see if there’s any takers. If there is, i’ll put them all up and hopefully they’ll come in useful.
A good few hours go into making these PowerPoints so hopefully they come in useful for others.
PowerPoint based Trivial Pursuit quiz that’s fully editable to your needs.
I put this together during my teaching years and had a great reaction to it with my students (I taught 16-19 in an FE college)
Theres one PowerPoint file which is a blank template waiting for you to put your own Q&A’s in there and two .pdf files. One with instructions on how to easily edit the powerpoint slides, the other with instructions on how to play it
Split the class into 4 teams, then they control the game. They pick the catagory and which question they want in order to fill their pie.
Each question has a timer which is needs to be answered within, and there’s a tie break question at the end incase two teams get all their slices by the end of a round.

I don’t want to charge a ton for these, but a good few hours go into making these PowerPoints so i’m just getting a little back for my time and hopefully they come in useful for others.
*Part 1 fixed (looks like the file corrupted the first time I uploaded it.)
This is a set of 3 PowerPoints which cover the Level 2 IMI VMR course unit LV02.1K written unit and also provides some exam revision for the online assessment.
I have split these into 3 powerpoints - I usually get through one within an hour lesson allowing students to folow along with the unit infront of them - allowing time for them noting answers down and discussion to explain the questions to ensure understanding.
Be sure to use the slideshow feature (press F5) or you’ll have a lot of overlapping images. Some parts may need to have pictures clicked to to reveal an answer - i’ve tried to point these out, but any troubles with them, please feel free to get in touch - happy to help.
I have also included an “offline copy” of the worksheet and extension activity word docs I made which uses the science garage videos on YouTube from Doughnut media - students watch the videos and answer the questions on the sheet. (Answer sheets also included) I made these to use with my classes and they work pretty well with the more interested students.

I originally made these when I was teaching remotely during the lockdown as a way to help explain the question and answer section of the IMI e-portfolio, but they continue to work well in the classroom.

This lesson covers awareness of hybrid vehicles, EV’s and briefly touches on fuel cell vehicles. I have added a word doc worksheet to go along with this PowerPoint for assessment purposes (and answer doc too) but essentially covers Hybrid/EV awareness, what makes them different and the dangers involved. Slide 18-21 is a little complicated for level 1, but a nice stretch challenge for brighter learners.

Set of two PowerPoints made for Level 1 Vehicle Maintenance and Repair course - The first covers Transmission / Driveline . There are 60 slides in total and makes use of the animations that PowerPoint offers. This lesson follows on from the engine lessons I have made, and introduces the transmission. It covers the gearbox, torque multiplication and final drive as well as the individual components and lubricnts involved that make up a typical vehicle drivetrain.
The second has 34 slides and covers vehicle electrics - introduces some basic vehicle electrical components and what they do before introducing wiring diagrams and simple series and parallel circuits. A simple wiring diagram is looked at with a variety of components including a tyipcal 4-pin relay which is then looked at in more detail.

Nice and easy (for the teacher) Q&A Starter activity:
I’ve used this blockbuster style game so many times to start a class with – Way back when, I was pulled up during teacher training observations about how I would pause between asking questions as I thought of relevant things to ask (it’s hard remembering all these things at the start of a lesson) so I wanted to make a bank of questions, but also make it into an interactive quiz type activity to use with my students. Tried thinking of classic gameshows or quizzes and this is what I came up with…
Good for direct or indirect questions, pick a student and ask for a letter (I used to teach the nato phonetic alphabet with this resource so they knew their alpha, bravo, charlie’s etc…) they have to answer in 30 seconds which counts down in the top left corner on each question. Once they answer, click on the question box to bring up the answer and see if they got it right. Easy.
This is a set of 12! PowerPoints covering questions that are covered throughout the IMI level 2 vehicle maintenance and repair course I used to teach. Each unit has 27 questions each, the students start from the left, and work their way right. If they get a question correct, the colour turns blue. Get it wrong, it turns black. They can only choose a letter that is touching a blue hex. If they’ve got a question wrong, they have to go around the black hex.
I’ve added a word doc with instructions, but its pretty easy to navigate.
It has a quiz for each unit:
G0102 Health & Safety
G4 Tools and Equipment
LV04 Wheels and tyres
LV04 Brakes
LV04 Steering
LV04 Suspension
LV02.1 Engine Mechanical
LV02.2 Engine Ignition
LV03 Electrical theory
LV03 Starting and charging
LV12 Clutch & Gearbox
LV12 Final Drive and gearing
I’m not looking to make my fortune off the PowerPoints I made whilst I was teaching, but they did take an awfully long time to create, edit and perfect, so i’m hoping to get a little pocket money from them and hopefully any one who does buy and support my work can see the time and effort it took as well as helping you with your teaching and making life a little easier in the classroom.
