If you’re studying or teaching Attack the Block as part of the Eduqas GCSE Film Studies course, you may have already bought my study guide (here) which contains a knowledge organiser already. However, I’ve updated this to reflect the specific focus of the film for the exam which is the style of the film with a whole range of knowledge organisers to aid revision. In total, there are THIRTY separate knowledge organiser files in this download, across 3 main types of knowledge organisers. The first is an updated knowledge organiser: the focus on the film in the exam is on the style of the film so I’ve identified 3 possible visual styles and have therefore included a section that reflects these three possible visual styles. The section version of the knowledge organiser features coloured sections-I’ve colour coded the visual styles as: classic sci-fi: teal, monster horror: red and urban realism: light grey. Then I’ve added these colours to each of the sections of the knowledge organiser that in some way reflect or use these visual styles. Finally, there are knowledge organisers that have blank sections included. I use these as low-stake quizzes in class asking students to complete the missing section. For each of these you’ll find a version for Microsoft Word, Mac OSX Pages and PDFs.
As well as this, I’ve also included a range of revision clocks in a range of styles for different platforms. These are brilliant ways to revise key texts and scenes. If you’re unsure of what they are, have a look online to see some brilliant examples and explanations.
This resource is an mp3 file where I comment, analyse and generally talk a lot whilst watching a film from the Eduqas GCSE Film Studies specification, ATTACK THE BLOCK.
As part of the GCSE, the focus of this film is on the style of the film and how it looks, so I watch and make reference to films that were an influence on the making of and the overall style of the film with ideas coming commentaries on the DVD and interviews from the Director Joe Cornish, information and ideas from the cast and crew and my own personal interpretation.
So, what is this download? Well, it’s an mp3 file of me talking over the film. There is a bit of waffle for the first couple of minutes and then over an hour of me watching the film and talking about it. Ideally then, have a copy of the film ready and to hand so that you can watch as I chat, and be prepared for me talking at 1000mph, but hopefully with some interesting insights, analysis and opinions on a whole range of things.

key scene analysis which includes links to the specific scenes or extracts, hosted permanently on YouTube, so you don’t even need a copy of the film to complete some of the tasks-again, perfect for students to complete!
Many of the tasks have also been designed to be peer or self-assessed and there is a wide variety of solo work, paired work or group work catered for, with each activity described in detail at the beginning of each task.
This booklet is designed to cover a broad range of topics and ideas related to both GCSE Film Studies exams. The tasks are designed to be open to all and every film choices and designed as actual revision tasks, but ones that get harde and more indepth as the tasks develop. This booklet then works best when you already have studied the individual films and topics needed and just need to revise those key ideas in a practical manner.
Your download will contain 3 versions of the same resource: a HQ PDF, an editable Word version and a highly useful PPT version. Overall though, this document contains work for at LEAST a months worth of lessons if students were revising every day and if used in classes, probably enough for an entire TERM. Take a look here if you’d like to see what the whole thing looks like.
Throughout you will see references to ’30 Days of Film Revision’: the original plan was to include 30 different tasks that could be completed one day at a time leading up to the day of the Component 1 exam. There are actually 31 activities in total now, in part because I added an extra day to relax, but also to include additional material that focuses on each exam in specific focus; these are the final “exam on a page’ resources you will find on pages 31 and 32.
When designing this booklet, I have done so with the methodology of recalling more generic, broad ideas at the beginning and then eventually becoming more focused and nuanced on specific films and possible exam questions. I also incorporated techniques related to spaced learning, interleaving and dual encoding and for this reason it may seem as though the tasks and ideas are being repeated or are revised once and then pop up again later on.
Finally, I find this booklet works best when printed and photocopied to A3 size allowing for more space to write, but it was designed and therefore works well, at A4 size, ideally as one complete booklet with a page completed each day.
This is a comprehensive guide to editing for film studies students and teachers alike. With over 30 pages of content and at over 13,000 words in length, you’ll not find a guidebook, resource or textbook that is as detailed, as insightful or as adaptable as this.
