Crystallisation practical lesson plan using salol

(3)
This is a lesson plan that has been designed and taught to year 8 students. It is taught early in the rock cycle scheme of work and uses salol. Glass rods are dipped in the salol and drops are put on warm, room temperature and cooled (in freezer) glass slides. Crystal size is measured and compared. This model is used to make anologies with rock cooling in the real world. Feedback to my TES inbox please.
Foundation Maths GCSE mindmap for revision

Foundation Maths GCSE mindmap for revision

(5)
I have used Mac mind mapping software MyThoughts to design a visual mind map for foundation Maths GCSE. There are 4 main categories: Shape, Number, Graphs and Algebra. Each category has branches - these are by no means exhaustive but do cover the main topics. Pupils can annotate it with pictures and equations from memory - e.g. as a starter. Alternatively they can put their confidence level next to each branch - as a happy/ neutral/ sad face or as a score out of 10. This can be printed clearly in black in white and displayed in the classroom as colour.

AS Chemistry - equilibrium

This is a lesson on equilibrium for AS chemistry. There are lesson grades C to A with clear AFL tasks including a literacy-based Just a Minute plenary. There is an exam focus throughout with the grade A task getting students to apply their understanding to new reactions. The video is the TED Ed Daniel Dulek video on the Haber Process. Behaviour for learning student checklist

Behaviour for learning student checklist

(7)
The aim of this ticklist is to help students stay focused and help teachers highlight what is going well as the lesson progresses. Each day one lesson is selected to use this ticklist in - starting with subjects where the student has been particularly poorly focused. This should work particularly well for students such as those who are autistic who need to visualise their behaviour. The updated version leaves space for positive comments to be made in the lesson. This resource can be given to the student by teachers, their tutors or support staff. Feedback to my TES inbox please.

OCR GCSE Gateway B3 revision - 2012 specification

(4)
This is a resource for the OCR GCSE Gateway B3 module designed for an additional class up to grades A and without the challenge expected for triple science. There is a student gap fill for all parts of the module (a copy of the spec is attached for reference - pages 52 to 67). Also included is a heart diagram with labels and 20 marks of exam questions based on respiration and parts of the cell (taken from AQA but relevant to the OCR spec). I will add further revision resources in Easter 2014.

Sodium chloride electrolysis OCR C2 higher set

(0)
This is a lesson on sodium chloride electrolysis designed for a triple set (top set) GCSE science group following the OCR Gateway science specification (C2H). The electrolysis is shown as a demo with students having previously carried out their own copper sulphate electrolysis practical. The lesson is designed to be fast paced with plenty of stretch and challenge as befits this set with students aiming for A* grades. Slides 5 (labelling) and 18 (extension activity) can be printed 6 slides per A4. Feedback to my TES inbox please.

Digestive system video questions and answers differentiated fully

(4)
The video that accompanies this worksheet has a weblink that is provided at the top of the worksheet. The video lasts for 3 minutes and 38 seconds so it is suggested that either the video is regularly paused or shown twice. Keywords and numbers are provided in a wordbook printed on the sheet. Challenge questions prompt students to analyze the digestion system such as why it should have a large surface area. It is suggested that students peer mark their work and AFL can be through the score they achieved or the number of challenge questions answered correctly. Photosynthesis lesson - develop higher level thinking - deciding which plant to feed the world

(0)
This is a lesson that is designed to develop higher level thinking on photosynthesis. This could be used at KS3 or GCSE and would fit into a scheme of work where the students have previously covered photosynthesis. In this lesson students are introduced to the thoughts of Thomas Malthus who said that resources (e.g. food) limit the growth of the population. Students are then given a task where they need to compare four plants and decide which plant they would recommend to farmers to grow. They need to justify their choice by referring to data from the sheets - such as saying that plants with longer root hairs will absorb more water and minerals or that plants with a greater density of chloroplasts would photosynthesis at a greater rate (assuming that CO2 etc are not limiting). Exam revision schedule and calendar 2017

These is a set of resources that I developed for my GCSE and A level students to help them structure their revision. This will help to reduce stress levels and my improve exam performance. Each day of the week is broken down into seven sections. These could be seven hours or seven half hours, depending on how much time the student wants to spend revising in one go. Revision tips are provided at the bottom of the calendar. A example revision schedule is provided for students to have a look at.

Homework checker classbook labels

(0)
This is a set of labels to printed as 6 slide handouts and stuck in student books either when homework is handed out or when it is handed in. It serves a similar purpose to the missing labels (see my other resources) in that it allows teachers to easily track missing homework and check which students regularly miss handing in homework. Countdown strategies 1 - music

There are a variety of ways to bring a class to a standstill so that you have their attention. A really exciting way is to use a song or tune that also provides a stimulating learning environment. Using a tune that lasts for around 3 minutes provides excellent pace. This strategy works particularly well with noisy, boisterous or simply excitable classes. This PowerPoint provides links to YouTube clips that you can use for a variety of classes and topics. Feedback to my TES inbox please.

This Adobe white paper is an absolutely excellent guide to visual literacy with references. This document provide a guide to presenting data in an effective way - a concern for statisticians, scientists and managers. Also check out Edward Tufte for his thoughts on this topic.

Moved classroom labels to laminate

These are A4 moved classroom labels that I laminate and keep on the back of my door. Then when the class moved from a lab to an ICT room or the library we put this on the front of the door so that staff or students know where the class has moved to.
