This is the fourth part for the verbal reasoning component of the 11 plus examinations for grammar and selective entrance schools all across the UK. There are 40-42 (including CEM format) possible types of exercise that can turn up on these entrance exams, these are the first quarter. These methods are unique to me and I spent some years with real pupils developing them to the highest possible standard. There is an extra part (5) for exercises added to these tests from 2012 that has been created for exclusive online upload too.s
For the CEM 11+ guides please see parts 6 and 7 of our survival guide.
This section contains mathematical sequences and skills, short codes and vocabulary exercises.
This is for schools that use the NFER Nelson, Nelson Bond or Bond style 11+
verbal reasoning component ONLY. All these sections are/will be available in the shop. The answers are included, with some explanations.
For parents, tutors and pupils who'd like to try for grammar or other selective school, each page has a full and friendly explanation of what to do and what tricks and traps to avoid, with sample questions to try at the bottom of each page.
Eight pages long and at a bargain price of £2 per section.
***Note that one or two typeos are always deliberately left in the NFer 11+ guides because they are notorious for having mistakes in their exams, one reason why many schools and LEAs are moving to CEM formats. Pupils need to know what it 'feels' like to find an error, to 'know' that examiners are fallible, how not to panic when they find an error as they will be awarded the mark anyway, and just to let the teacher/invigilator know. Parents/tutors do have this explanation ready when your child/pupil attempts these tests. Errors are most common on maths and codes exercises.***

To be used as an example resource with my 'sneaky times tables' documents, this method and layout of long division is a good teaching aid and sets it out in an easy to read and follow format. From this you can make your own examples and help pupils get to grips with this method.
Often the hardest part of long division is ensuring that the pupil knows that division and subtraction 'go together' just like addition and multiplication do, and knowing how many times a number goes into another number. This is just one of many guides that will make clear this process for pupils.
This is the first part for the Mathematics component of the 11 plus examinations for grammar and selective entrance schools all across the UK. There are 60 possible types of exercise that can turn up on these entrance exams, these are the first quarter. These methods are unique to me and I spent some years with real pupils developing them to the highest possible standard.
It is set out in the form of an exam paper that is six pages long and contains 60 questions, and is 16 pages long in total.
The first six pages are the paper itself. The following topics are covered:
Fractions, decimals and % (up to level 5 skills)
Basic algebra
Area of 3 and 4 sided shapes
Pythagoras' Theorem
Inverse operations
Time (12 and 24 hour clock, as a fraction)
Degrees
Lowest common multiples
Conversions (metric and time).
Unlike many other papers that just provide answers and no help, it then has
-a full page where you can note your scores on each skill, showing strengths and weaknesses in these areas. Full guides on how to do these skills, if not already, will soon be available in the shop.
- NINE pages of full, colour coded and informal (but correct) explanations of every single question, with consistent and fast methods to help you get the answer right every time!
For parents, tutors and pupils who'd like to try for grammar or other selective school, and can also be used for Year 7 preparation to ensure pupils are streamed into top middle and higher in Maths sets whether they go to grammar school or not. It can also be used for 11+ retakes at 12/13+.
Using a pattern based on ten, this guide is meant to show pupils how multiplication tables aren't scary or hard to learn, and emphasise how they work rather than just using blind learning by rote.
It can be used for pupils of any age who have trouble remembering the multiplication tables. There will be a second part to this showing how this method applies to larger multiples which is very useful for long division.
An entire lesson package for 11-16 year olds, or those studying KS3, any GCSE Maths syllabus, or Levels 1-3 Maths as an Adult student. The topic covered here is significant figures, something with which a lot of students struggle.
This ten page document has friendly, informal and easy to understand language and layout, with clear methods you can copy or follow to get the right answers.
With examples and over 20 carefully formulated questions, this can be used as a whole lesson for pupils, teachers, tutors and parents who are home schooling. There are also FULLY explained answers for each question.
It also touches on the topics of long multiplication, fractions, problems and decimal place, all of which have a guide in my shop.
A good teaching and revision resource, this six page fully illustrated resource helps makes sense of Pythagoras' Theorem and how we can use it to work out the length of the sides on triangles. Six pages long and with examples and friendly language, this is an essential aid for pupils struggling with this topic.
An entire lesson package for 11-16 year olds, or those studying KS3, any GCSE Maths syllabus, or Levels 1-3 Maths as an Adult student. The topic covered here is volume, focusing on the intermediate skill of cylinders and spheres. For this you need to know how to do the area of a circle, but this is included in the handout. This might be a challenge for pupils who are scoring less than 80% in maths tests but everyone is welcome to try it, as it is very simply explained.
This nine page document has friendly, informal and easy to understand language and layout, with clear methods you can copy or follow to get the right answers.
With examples and 19 questions with diagrams, this can be used as a whole lesson and/or revision for pupils, teachers, tutors and parents who are home schooling. The answers are detailed but without method as this is for intermediate students so a basic level of understanding is assumed.
It also touches on the topics of long multiplication, calculator practice, fractions and decimal place, all of which have a guide in my shop.
