Music Termly Homework Grid
This homework grid is set out to encourage students to choose their own learning path within a given framework. Each of the three difficulty levels rewards more points towards the terms total than the last but is capped so students will complete 3-4 homework tasks to make the total points needed by the end of the given time frame.
The tasks are related to listening skills, practical skills, analytical skills and knowledge of the musical elements. This is so a student who has access to instruments at home is not at a distinct advantage to the students who have no access.
GCSE Elements of Music revision sheet
This master sheet has guidance for likely to come up key terms for Time Signatures, Tonality, Melody, Harmony, Rhythm, Texture, Ornamentation, Articulation, Structure, Musical Diction, Dynamics, Notes in a Scale, Chords, Tempo and Cadances.
This sheet is perfect for revision of the terms as well as essay practice and listening tasks. Each topic is well annotated showing connections between terms and explaining all main considerations for a GCSE student.
Changing Genre Worksheet
This worksheet is intended as a guide for students to take chords and a riff which are provided and to adapt them to fit different musical genres.
The genres with specific guidance are Rock, Hip-Hop/Rap, Jazz and EDM although there is also guidance for what to think about if choosing a different genre to these. Each of the named genres have noted features with guidance for students to recreate the given material in their chosen style.
There is a chord box with the notes for each chord as well as a rhythm guide for the riff and a drum pattern diagram to get students started. Below them is a suggestion for how these elements could be put together to create a complete sounding piece.
Christmas Changing Genre - Jingle Bells worksheet
This worksheet is intended as a guide for students to take the chords and melody to Jingle Bells which are provided and to adapt them to fit different musical genres.

Reggae Starter Powerpoint - True or false
This powerpoint is for the game “Bob Marley or Bob MarLIE” where the class has to decide if it is a true or false statement about Bob Marley and Reggae music.
It can be played as a reward at the end of lessons or as a starter to give context to the work done. It can also be played in groups, halves of the class or as separate smaller teams.
Introduction to Riff PowerPoint
This powerpoint is meant to be an introduction to the idea of a riff with multiple examples to play as well as audio examples of riffs in context.
The powerpoint also contains a link to an Edpuzzle task to go through with students to get whole class answers before introducing multiple levels of difficulty with multiple notated and annotated riffs.
The students can choose between “Seven Nation Army” by The White Stripes, “You Really Got Me” by The Kinks and “Xxplosive” by Dr Dre. These build in difficulty and are all fully notated with resources in the powerpoint and scannable by QR code.
Waltz lesson powerpoint
This powerpoint is meant to be an introduction to the idea of a waltz with audio examples, multiple notations and videos showing how to play the melody at two different difficulty levels.
The powerpoint also contains a link to an Edpuzzle task to go through with students to get whole class answers before introducing multiple levels of difficulty with multiple notated and annotated riffs.
For lesson there is a starter task with info on the waltz style, a “spot the patterns” task for the melody, a full notation of the waltz to learn and a recap task for the end of the lesson.
Tango lesson powerpoint
This powerpoint is meant to be an introduction to the style of Tango with audio examples, key features of the style and labelled guides with chord diagrams and suggested bass parts to create a full Tango piece.
The powerpoint also contains a finger labelling and a full guide to the chord progression.
For lesson there is a starter task with info comparing Tango, Disco and Waltz style dance music and a more in depth look at the features of Tango on the following slide.
Billionaire - Multiple Lessons Workbook
This booklet contains enough work to fill a couple of lessons with a focus on learning the song “Billionaire” By Bruno Mars and Travie Mccoy.
It has work on listening skills, performance, improvisation and the rhythm work. The chords and melody for the piece are all highlighted and there are chord boxes for students to learn the chords on piano/keyboard.

Life's tough quiz game board PowerPoint
This powerpoint is set up for revision, tests/quizzes or just games of “Life’s Tough”. It works by either groups or individuals answering questions they are given, when they answer correctly they can come up to the board and pick a number, behind each number is either a +5, +10 or +15 points with some -1 and -10 point blocks hidden in there as well. The winner at the end is the team/individual who has the highest score.
This is a great motivation tool for lower ability students who will see that there is always a chance to win as no one team is able to consistently gain points and take a commanding lead. Students I have used this with love the random element it gives to quizzes and I’ve found it to work best with teams and accepting the first three correct answers written down that I move around the room to check. Three teams choosing at a time gives you 6 questions per board.
There are 6 boards with the points in a different order so the students cannot learn where the positives are. I mix them up but there are enough for one a term. There are also the individual slides used to create the finished boards so you can make more or change them however you want.
Movie Music Day Course
This session should last for 3-4 hours focused on learning and composing music for film. It highlights the ideas of a leitmotif, including examples from Star Wars, James Bond, Mission Impossible and Pirates of the Caribbean.
There are work sheets on diegetic and non-diegetic sound, the instruments of the orchestra and different musical styles used in film. The final sheet is detailing the steps used when creating variations of a melody such as sequencing, inversion etc.
These sheets are designed to be either used in conjunction as a booklet for a days intervention or spread across a few lessons. Each sheet is a self contained topic which can be used individually in isolation from the rest of the booklet if needed.
Music Blockbuster Game Powerpoint
This Powerpoint is an adaptable game of Blockbusters. The complete version on the first slide is a general music theme using the elements of music, some contextual questions, vocab checks and orchestral families.
There are other slides there to make it easily adaptable to different topics. To edit, simply add your chosen questions and and answers to the relevant slides and then copy and paste them on to the final slide.
The powerpoint works by playing the slideshow and having the them answer the questions. When the correct answer is given you can click the edge of the blue hexagon (try to avoid the text for the easiest use) to reveal the answer and a yellow hexagon below. That team/student then needs to answer a question in a block connected to their previous one on their next turn. The first to make a complete chain from left to right wins!
Musical Elements posters MADTSHIRT visuals
This series of posters sets out the key terms used with each musical element and show visual representations of their meaning to work as an aid in a classroom or as a revision guide.
Each poster is colour coded and shows the features of each element to be used as prompts for answering questions, a quick reference for the classroom or as a way of embedding knowledge for students.
