Italian Christmas Io ho… Chi ha… ? is a whole-group lively and communicative language learning game. The repetitive nature of the questions and answers, supported by the visual prompts of the Italian Christmas images, makes it perfect for practising, reinforcing and refreshing Italian Christmas vocabulary. The game has a multi-skill focus: listening, speaking & reading, with an important bonus focus on social interaction and participation. It’s perfect for pronunciation practice too.
The aim of the game is to arrange the cards in the relevant order. Students can either create a human chain, holding the cards themselves, or a card line, on the floor, a longish table or other flat surface. There are 32 Italian Christmas words with images, and it’s likely that students will have more than one card each per game, depending on the size of the class. The vocabulary and images provide a really useful stimulus for discussion about Christmas traditions and practices in Italian-speaking countries.
There are two games, each with a different challenge:
= Challenge 1: the nouns written out in full with the definite article, and the Q & A Io ho… Chi ha…? Students walk around, calling out the question.
= Challenge 2: the nouns are in a different order, with only the definite article, and the Q & A ***Hi…? Sì (No), io ho…***. This challenge puts students’ vocabulary recall to the test, and students walk around, addressing other students individually.
Play either as a whole-group game, or as a team game - which team can complete the challenge first? You can either play the challenges consecutively, or as a team game, swapping the challenges so that each team has a chance to play both challenges.

A lively whole-group multi-skill language learning game, ideal for Primary German / KS2 German and KS3 / KS4 German students. The repetitive nature of the questions and answers, supported by the visual prompt of the clock faces, makes it perfect for practising, reinforcing & refreshing how to tell the time in German, and for pronunciation practice too.
There are 8 clock faces per page. This size ensures they are sufficiently large for students to be able to read the time clearly, also allowing for an ideal font size to keep language clear and accessible. I always laminate my language learning cards - it’s definitely worth the extra prep time and expense, as they’re more learner-friendly, and remain in excellent condition for years. The aim of the game is to arrange the clocks in the relevant order. Students will generally have several cards each, depending on the size of your class. We usually set the cards on a table, so that students can see the timeline clearly. I frequently use a timer when we play. Playing in teams, using either a single challenge, or with both challenges together, is really popular - students find the competitive element really motivating and are genuinely keen to see which team can finish first, and whether they can beat their own time record. The games also work well as pair or small-group games.
There are two games, each with a different challenge:
= Challenge 1: with all the the clock times in numerical order, Ich habe… Wer hat…?
= Challenge 2: with the all the clock times in random order, which really helps recall and embedding new language, as students often learn time phrases in numerical order, Hast du…? Ja, (Nein) ich habe…

I generally work with telling the time in German quite quickly with my beginner German students, as it lends itself really well to promoting speaking in the classroom, discussing daily routines for example. Students tend to find half past the hour in German quite challenging, and the focused practice is really useful.
There are two questions: Wie spät ist es / Wie viel Uhr ist es? with a particular clock face, and students write the response on their recording sheet or in their workbooks. The second question is Richtig oder falsch and students write either richtig or falsch - where the answer is falsch, remind students to write the correct time for additional consolidation.
The set comprises the following non-editable files:
= 60 question cards, 10 per A4 (8.5 x 11) paper
= answer key & recording sheet
Laminate the cards if you can - they’re far more learner-friendly, and remain in excellent condition for years.

Challenge cards are an ideal learning activity for German class. Students can develop, embed, reinforce and refresh their German language skills in a cooperative, communicative and interactive way, independently of the teacher. This freebie focuses on German dates, days, months and seasons, which is usually described as beginner German vocabulary. The questions however are aimed at advanced beginner German into intermediate German students, as working with more complex language as quickly as possible helps progress students’ learning and gives them in a more realistic experience of the language they are learning.
The set comprises the following non-editable files:
= 12 differentiated question cards, 6 per A4 (8.5 x 11) paper. Laminate if possible, as the cards are more learner-friendly, and will remain in excellent condition for years
= answer key - providing students with additional opportunity to engage with language, helping them develop more independence in their learning - and a great teacher time-saver too
= answer recording sheet - print and photocopy an appropriate number for your class. I tend to use these only for more formal assessment purposes - students generally use their class workbooks to note and work out responses, saving prep time and expense.
The question cards are labelled A-L, so you can use them together with the set of 48 task cards to make 60 task cards in total.
There are 48 differentiated question cards in this set:
