History- The Ancient Greeks- Alexander the Great
In this lesson, students will learn who Alexander the Great was and how he impacted on Greek history.
They will learn where he came from and all about his early life. They will learn all about his conquests across Macedonia, Persia, Africa and Asia. They will learn about him as a military leader and consider why he was so effective before learning how his reign came to an end.
A quiz will test their understanding before they complete a storyboard task of his life. They will also complete a newspaper article based on what they have learnt. All resources and activity sheets are included.
This lesson is intended for KS2 but can easily be modified to suit KS3.

Science- Properties and Changes of materials- Thermal Conductors and Insulators- Year 5
In this lesson, students will learn about thermal conductors and insulators. They will learn what materials are thermally conductive and how they are used to help us e.g. radiators. They will look at how the particles behave in thermally conductive materials and using a thermocolour sheet will carry out tests on various materials.
They will also learn about thermal insulators and again will look at how they are used to help us e.g. flasks. They will plan and carry out an experiment testing which material is best to use to insulate hot water and, using the experiment proforma sheet, will record their results and analyse their findings.

Science- Light- How we see colour- Year 6
Light is electromagnetic radiation which is visible to the human eye. In this lesson, students will investigate light and colour. They will be taught how rainbows are created and will produce their own colour wheels, they will learn how the Visible Spectrum works and the science behind it. They will also look at filters and how they absorb and reflect different colours and will experiment with filters themselves. Links are given to two informative video clips and the lesson comes with an engaging presentation and lesson plan.
This lesson has been planned for Year 6 students but can easily be modified to suit lower KS2 and KS3.

Science- Forces- Mechanisms Year 5/6
A mechanism is a device which takes an input motion or force, and outputs a different motion and force.
In this lesson, students will learn about different mechanisms such as pulleys, gears and levers. They will see how each works in everyday life and learn the science behind them. They will be asked to identify which mechanism from the images and will complete a quiz mid-way through to check understanding.
They will then carry out an experiment creating their own levers before designing their own machines using what they have learnt. The activity sheets are provided which guide them through this process.

Light is electromagnetic radiation which is visible to the human eye. In this lesson, students will explore the direction of light from a source to a person’s eye and how the eye works. They will watch video clips and see diagrams explaining how the eye works and will then label the eye. Finally, they will write a script for an educational programme using what they have learnt. History KS2- Victorian Crime and Punishment
In this lesson, students will learn about why crime became such as problem in the Victorian era and how a police force and harsh punishments were brought in to solve the problem.
They will learn about what punishments were given in schools, prisons and for more serious crimes.
They will be tasked to enact short dramas based on the stories given and to then write a newspaper article focusing on one of the stories in detail (proforma provided).

Science- Properties and Changes of materials- Reversible and Irreversible Changes- Year 5
In this lesson, students will look at examples of reversible physical changes and irreversible chemical changes involving reactants and products. They will categorise different changes accordingly and will learn what indicators to look for to determine whether something is an irreversible change.
Using the experiment proforma sheet, they will carry out four different irreversible change experiments and will discuss their observations before being given scientific explanations for each. Finally, they will carry out a quiz on what they have learnt.

Science- Properties and Changes of materials- Separating Mixtures- Year 5
In this lesson, students will learn that a mixture is a combination of two or more substances that aren’t chemically joined and can be separated back into their individual substances. They will learn that there are two types of mixtures: heterogeneous and homogeneous and will look at examples of each.
They will then look at how these mixtures can be separated before completing a quiz on what they have learnt. Following this, they will carry out 3 investigations of separating mixtures. They will follow the experiment proforma to help them organise, record and analyse their observations before discussing their experiments as a class.

English- The Hobbit- Describing Characters
The Hobbit, or There and Back Again is a children’s fantasy novel by English author J. R. R. Tolkien. The Hobbit is set within Tolkien’s fictional universe and follows the quest of home-loving Bilbo Baggins, the titular hobbit.
This lesson looks at describing the character of Bilbo Baggins. It teaches how to describe characters according to their appearance, personality, behaviour and any special traits or interests.
Students look at a number of example extracts and are asked to highlight these examples before planning and writing their own character description using the planning frame provided.

In this lesson, students will clear about Carl Linneaus, the father of taxonomy, and his system of classifying and naming organisms. They will learn what classification is, they will watch a video about Carl Linneaus and will learn about his system which classifies organisms acorrding to the domain, kingdom, phylum, class, order, family, genus, and species. Students will investigate these terms and will research their own choices of creatures and how they would be classified.

Maths- comparing & ordering fractions- Year 6
Comparing and ordering fractions is an essential part of developing number sense.

In this lesson, students will learn what the British Industrial Revolution was and how it changed Britain. They will look at 6 key areas which contributed to this, completing research on top of information given.

Science- Animals including Humans- Drugs & Alcohol- Year 6
In this lesson, students will learn about the harmful effects of drugs, alcohol and smoking. They will learn that some drugs, such as prescription drugs, can be helpful if taken in the appropriate quantity. They will look at the side effects of drugs, alcohol and smoking in detail and will be quizzed on what they have learnt.
Finally, they will create their own informative leaflets (scaffold provided) using their new knowledge.
