In this lesson students will learn what inheritance is and how the differences between us is due to inherited traits and variation. They will consider acquired and inherited traits and will organise example traits accordingly. They will try to identify inherited traits in images and will draw different versions of a puppy taking different features from their parents. A force is a push or pull that causes a change in speed, direction or shape. Some forces are affected by speed, other forces are not. All forces come in pairs, no force exists by itself. In this lesson, students are introduced to what a force is and how the affect us. They look at examples of magnetism, air & water resistance, friction and upthrust. The interactive powerpoint shows how the forces work through diagrams and videos. The students then complete the activity sheet labelling the forces and drawing their own diagrams. In this lesson students will learn about Darwin’s theory of evolution and how it can be explained through natural selection. They will watch an engaging video clip, look at the example of the peppered moth and Darwin’s finches on his voyage aboard the HMS Beagle. They will then investigate Darwin’s theory derived from finches by experimenting with different beak types collecting different food. They will consider how this showed that successful animals adapt to their environment. By the end of the lesson they will have been able to demonstrate the theory of natural selection! Gravity or gravitation, is a natural phenomenon by which all things with mass or energy, including planets, stars, galaxies, and even light are brought toward (or gravitate toward) one another. In this lesson, students will be taught what gravity is and how it affects us and how it is different in space. They will learn about Sir Isaac Newton and how weight is different to mass. They will then carry out two experiments- in the first experiment they will measure objects with scales and a newton meter in order to show the difference between weight and mass. After this, they will compare the mass and speed of falling objects to investigate whether the heavier an object, the faster it falls. Both investigations come with a worksheet to follow. “The Highwayman” is a narrative poem written by Alfred Noyes, first published in 1906. It tells the story of an unnamed highwayman who is in love with Bess, a landlord’s daughter. In this lesson, students will explore the characters in more detail. They will begin by carrying out ‘roll on the wall’ with each character by going around the room adding to what they know about each character, linking to the text. Following this, they will complete the character cards which identify quotes from the text. Students have to infer what is happening at that point in the poem and what the quotes tell us about the characters and how they are feeling.
