Dictation sentences and longer passages. This resource is in line with the National Curriculum objectives on the value of dictation to children. UPDATED TO INCLUDE PDF DOCS Aimed at: Foundation/Keystage 1/2 and suitable for ESL/EFL students. The resource comprises:- PowerPoint Presentation (1) - contains 10 sentences for dictation. PowerPoint Presentation (2) - contains 20 texts for dictation - passages are longer. Ready-made worksheets (x3) Handwriting sheets Audio recording of all the dictation - on the last slide of each Presentation. Clear and comprehensive Teacher’s Notes on suggested use of this resource. The learning objectives are outlined - in short the children to write from memory simple sentences dictated by the teacher that include GPCs and common exception words. This activity gives the student the opportunity to practise their spelling. You can use this resource in focus groups or whole class teaching. The texts are numbered but you do not have to follow the number order. You can pick and choose any text to suit the level of your class or group. As suggested in the teacher’s notes, you print of the text to read aloud or play the audio. After the dictation, the children can correct each other’s work by referring to the text on the PowerPoint Slide, and then copy the corrected piece of writing into their literacy books in their best handwriting. Punctuations dictated are: full stops, commas in a list, question marks and exclamation marks. Speech marks/inverted commas are also used in two of the texts for the higher Keystage students. This product relates to adverbs of degree. I have included a common list of words but there are so many. Use this resource to supplement your teaching of adverbs of degree. You may like to display some of the posters around your classroom. Laminating the posters and flashcards gives them that professional look. Content: Teacher’s Notes Adverbs of degree title card 15 whole page display cards or anchor cards (you can enlarge) 52 Adverbs of degree flashcards - you can photocopy onto colour card paper Differentiated Worksheets 1x Word Search with Solution The 52 adverbs of degree are 4 words to a page - just laminate and cut out. Extras: 6 sets of Worksheets to practise using adverbs of degree: Worksheet 1: Adverbs of Degree Cloze Activity. Students choose an adverb to complete the six sentences. For the second part of the worksheet, students make up a sentence of their own using one of the adverbs that was not used in the cloze activity. Worksheet 2: Adverbs of Degree Modifying Adjectives Worksheet. Students write 9 sentences using the numbered adverb/adjective words in the table. The students can work in pairs if they feel they need help in making up sentences. Worksheet 3 – Adverbs of Degree Modifying Action Worksheet. An explanation is given in the box. Worksheet 5: Adverbs Focus: Enough, Too and Very Worksheet (with Answer Sheet) In completing this worksheet, students must think about the word order of ‘enough’. The rest of the worksheet is straightforward when the students come to use ‘too’ and ‘very’. The second part of the worksheet requires students to write their own sentences using each of the degree adverbs. Adverbs of Degree Word Search (with Solution) – Students find 14 words listed that go across and down. Worksheet 6: Extension: Rewrite the list in alphabetical order on a separate sheet of paper. Listening and Speaking: As a whole class or small group activity, shuffle a few flashcards and ask a student to select a card. You can display flashcards around the classroom as visual reference for the children. B. Set of Consonant Endings Blend Cards Small endings blend cards for small group activities. Students can practise saying the graphemes and clap each letter. You could ask what letters the students could put before the consonant blends to make a word. Some students might remember the flashcards you showed earlier in the lesson. For example, you can put ‘a’ before ‘ct’ to make the word ‘act’. You can select easier cards such as ‘e’ and ‘nd’ ‘end’ or ‘o’ and ‘ld’ for old, ‘e’ and ‘lk’ for ‘elk’ or ‘lf’ for ‘elf’. Practise writing the graphemes on handwriting paper. C. Set of Beginning Words Card for activity and a set of Endings Blends for activity These are the words on the flashcards that have been separated for this activity. Ideally laminate these cards and then cut apart. This is a word making activity and you can choose either cursive or non-cursive cards. Whatever level your students are at, you can select the beginning words and endings blends cards and put a selection on the tables. Students practise making words with the selected cards. After practising, they can list the words they have made on the Recording Worksheet. D. 3 Ready-made making words Worksheets There are three ready-made worksheets which replicates the above activity. The images of the two sets of cards are in separate boxes. Students choose one of the starting words in the box and the consonant ending blends in the other box in order to make a word. Students write the word out. The last activity is to choose one word and write a sentence with it. E. Playing a matching game You may have to print out some beginning and endings blends more than once to make different words, e.g. be st be nd se nd. You decide on how many words you want the students to make. Lay out a selection of beginning and ending words in to two piles face down. 1st player chooses a beginning word and an ending word, if they match to make a word he/she keeps them. Updated with PowerPoint Name Spinner You can use it as an icebreaker in the first week of term to find out about your students and they can find out about each other’s similarities and differences. <strong>Content</strong> Teacher’s Notes Learning Objectives and starter activity How to use the PowerPoint Presentation generator questions/names PowerPoint Presentation to randomly generate questions - I have typed in the questions. Start the Slide Show and then click on From Beginning icon. Press the ‘s’ key to stop and the PowerPoint will automatically stop on a question. Start the generator again by pressing the spacebar. PowerPoint Presentation to randomly select names in your class - I have set up the presentation - just type in the names of your students and save. Then as above go into Slide Show and then click From Beginning. The presentation will randomly generate the names. Press the ‘s’ key to stop and the PowerPoint will automatically stop on a name. To start the generator again hit the spacebar. I have uploaded a set of time-saving worksheets relating to upper and lower case letters of the alphabet. Aimed at: Reception/KS1 Total worksheets: 40 Description of resources: • Set 1 Worksheets – Select the correct initial letters for pictures; • Set 2 Worksheets – Select 6 correct initial letters out of the 8 from the rectangle to write below the pictures ; • Set 3 Worksheets – Select correct initial capital letter from circle to complete each word; • Set 4 Worksheets – Each box contains two pictures beginning with the same initial letters. Students write the initial alphabet letter for the pictures. • Set 5 Worksheets – Fill in the missing letter to complete the word then rewrite the whole word in capital letters. • Set 6 Worksheets – The pictures in each box start with different initial alphabet letters. Students write the initial letters below each picture in their best handwriting to practise mid-zone letters, ascender and descender letters. These are mixed CVC word cards. The words are jumbled/scrambled. Students can write the correct word or you can get them to type in the correct spelling as I have now included fillable blanks. This is the updated version, but I’ve retained the old version in case you prefer the old version. Also suitable for ESL/EFL students and students still finding it challenging to discriminate sounds. A lovely addition to your phonics lessons or literacy centre. How to use:- The student looks at the picture and say what it is. When s/he knows what the picture is they attempt to sort out the jumbled word by sounding out initial medial and final letters. S/he then writes the word correctly on the line. Other use:- There are 58 cvc cards which are made up of 29 pairs of onset and rime words and pictures. Lay out pairs of cards for the student to match the rhyming pictures and then unscramble the words and write on the lines. Alphabet resource for display and alphabet activities. This resource contains the following:- Teacher’s Notes • Aa to Zz frieze showing pictures beginning with initial letter. Laminate and punch holes and thread through with a string to hang around the classroom or peg onto a washing line across a wall/classroom. Aa – Zz word strips and related pictures • Laminate and cut out • Can be used as an extension activity. Children trace round the initial dotted letter which shows a picture for that letter. Alphabet cards • Alphabet cards should be printed off twice, laminated and cut out. • Children can play alphabet snap • Other games – lay out 4 or 5 letters in alphabetical order ,e.g. k, l, m, n, o, cover them over. Take a letter away without the children seeing and ask what letter is missing. • Matching lower case to upper case letters activity. Practise writing frames using Sassoon dotted font • These are in upper and lower cases. Each one should be laminated. • After focussing on e.g. ‘t’, children can practise writing over the dots and then without the dots as handwriting exercises. Alphabet Mat Practise (trace over dotted letters) Photocopy these and laminate • Children can keep it in their trays for reference; • can practise their handwriting if they finish their work early or for those children who need to practise fine motor skills. Practise writing frames using Sassoon dotted font • These are in upper and lower cases. Each one should be laminated. • After focussing on e.g. ‘t’, children can practise writing over the dots and then without the dots as handwriting exercises. Alphabet Mat • Can be laminated and blu tac to the wall in the writing/reading/book corner. • Can be used to assess a child’s phonic progress. Alphabet Pictures Games/Assessment • The pictures represent the start of a letter e.g. ‘g’ for grasshopper. The pictures are not in alphabetical order so that you have to look for the picture. • Enlarge the A4 size sheet to A3 and the sheet with the alphabet tiles. • Laminate the Alphabet Pictures grid • Laminate the Alphabet sheet then cut out each letter for use with Alphabet Pictures grid. • Children can play in pairs. A timer can be set so that children have a limited time to place the letter on the correct picture. • Players take turns to ask his/her partner to find the picture beginning with, e.g. ‘s’. The player picks out one of the letters and places it over the correct picture sound on the Alphabet Picture Mat. The resource contains:- 32 Slides PowerPoint Presentation Flexible detailed lesson plans covering 2 lessons (includes learning objectives and plenaries/closing session). Each PowerPoint slide is referred to in the lesson plans. Lesson 1: Children link the shamrock St Patrick is holding to Irish myths, including leprechaun costumes that they might see on St Patrick’s Day celebrations. Learn the difference between myths and legends. They look at mythical beasts and describing words and phrases. Differentiated worksheets - With support - LA draw their own picture of Cyclops and label the parts with adjectives. MA/HA - Draw own picture of Cyclops or create their own mythical creature and label it with adjectives and and use simple sentences to describe in more detail, e.g. its body was as big as a house. Extension: Complete Patrick’s Day Factsheet (colour in/4 questions). Lesson 2: Previous is lesson reviewed. This lesson focuses on the retelling of myths and sequencing events. Children can dab or cross off a picture that they have with a dry-wipe pen or place a counter on their picture. 36 Calling cards with words and pictures. For Snap! Make extra copies of the calling cards for students to play Snap! Memory Match Game: Photocopy two sets of the calling cards and then lay out a selection of the cards face down on the table. Players take turns to pick up two cards. If the cards match, the player keeps the two. If the two cards do not match, the player returns the cards to the same position they were in face down. The players have to try and remember where the cards are.
