Last minute - morning revision for biology paper 1.
This is aimed at the lower ability students with a focus on key facts and easy win knowledge.
CB5g - Immune response - Edexcel 9-1 - Topic 5: Lesson 5 Immune response
The lesson is specific the new Edexcel 9-1 GCSE and part of topic 5.
The lesson starts by discussing the process of pathogens entering the body and the response by the lymphocytes, this is does over 6 slides with fun animations and covers the required learning outcome. There is a brief discussion of vaccination before learning is assessed via a 'deep' hinge point question. There are two activities that, depending on students understanding can be done from this and an extension task. The lesson finishes with an exam question and reflection in the Learning Outcomes sheet.
Microscopes - magnification and scale
The lesson is a maths for biology focused lesson which involved a series of calculations for magnification (3 levels of differentiation) followed by a hinge point question leading into a series of calculations on scale and perceived size. The demonstrate activity is a student choice of difficulty to solve a biological problem. The lesson concluded with an exit ticket.

These are 'plug and play' lessons designed for ease of application and good to outstanding lessons. I am very pleased with this series of lessons as it has inspired a difficult year 10 cohort and increased motivation in science.
Communicable diseases - independent activity and exam question
The lesson starts with a gcse biology question looking at the prevalence of TB and HIV.
The learning outcomes are then reviewed before the students attempt an independent research task looking at five communicable diseases and answering questions that lead to an understanding of the learning outcome.
Their understanding is assessed by matching question and answer card sort, included were in the download, there is a higher order question two push the top end of students. The lesson concludes with a 10 mark exam question which students record in an exit ticket tracker and rank their learning outcomes.
There is a model answer to the ten mark exam question included to ensure consistency for the students.
Food tests
The lesson looks at investigating the standard food tests for: starch, protein, sugar, fat. The lesson if for the higher ability students. The lesson tests student's understanding with an exam question before an exit ticket concludes learning.
CB9 Edexcel: Lesson 9 - biodiversity
The lesson looks at endangered species and moves to discuss deforestation. Students then have to design their own ecosystem before there understanding is demonstrated with work sheet. The lesson concludes with an exam question.
Life Processes Lesson 10- Pyramids of biomass
The lesson is based on the new 2016 Edexcel GCSE and has been made accessible for those in KS3.
The lesson starts by reviewing two clips of different predator- prey scenarios. There are different levels of questions for the students to attempt. The lesson evolves to describing what pyramids of biomass are before the students attempt some for themselves. The students then attempt a GCSE question and mark-scheme to help them if the get stuck. It concludes with an exit ticket.
Biology - Osmosis, diffusion and active transport
This is a whole lesson that includes worksheets and a presentation.
Over arching concepts in biology.
The lesson is part of a series of lessons that cover topic one of Biology.
This lessons focuses on osmosis and diffusion with the addition of active transport. There are multiple opportunities for differentiation already built in in a bronze, silver gold format. There are two hinge point questions that offer a really good AFL opportunity. The lesson requires potassium permanganate and a deodorant can.
DNA - Edexcel 9-1 GCSE Biology: Topic 3, lesson 1 DNA
Topic three lesson one focuses on DNA. The lesson starts with an administrative starter ensuring that presentation is to Ofsted Standard. The lesson moves onto discuss DNA using images and key points that build on KS3. Understanding is assessed via a hinge point question and a silver or gold task is allocated to evidence differentiation and give the students the most appropriate task. The lesson gives the students the opportunity to demonstrate their knowledge with and exam style question and markscheme before the lesson concludes with an exit ticket.
Plant and Animal cells
The lesson requires microscopes and slides, it focuses on making comparisons between plant and animal cells and assesses this in a 6 mark question, this is to be self-assessed with and mark scheme (foundation and higher lessons attached as a formative feedback activity. The lesson concludes with an exit ticket.
With in the download there is a information sheet on plant, animal and prokaryote cells and a differentiated exam question with the mark schemes on the back to encourage resilience for the students and modelling success.

CB1g Edexcel 9-1- Enzyme theory prior to core practical - lesson 14
Over arching concepts in biology.
The lesson is part of a series of lessons that cover topic one of the new GCSE (to be sat in 2017).
This lesson pushes the basics of enzyme activity (denaturing, optimum pH, temperature, substrate concentration) It leads to a differentiated activity to help understanding for mid and high ability. The lesson concludes with an annotated exam question from the 2017 GCSE How Science Works questions. There is an exit tick plenary.
CB5e - Spread and Prevention - Edexcel 2016 - Topic 5: Lesson 3 Spread and Prevention
The lesson start by engaging the students with a guess the LQ activity. The students then are guided through producing a mind-map of the spread and prevention of the exam spec diseases before they attempt a 6 mark question. As a class they review the mark scheme self assess their own work and redraft to perfect there answer.
STI and prevention - Lesson to inspire and inform the most in need of education.
The lesson is of vital importance to young adults as it make students aware of the risk of unprotected sex.
The do it now activity is a image to inspire disgust and conversation around the topic. There is a short video clip and some active watch questions to inspire conversation. The lesson them moves to looking a facts of 7 STIs and ranking them in an arrowhead 7. There is a brief look on the prevention of the contraction of the disease and then students attempt a exam style HSW worksheet; there is an extension built into the worksheet.
CB5c - Obesity and BMI - Edexcel 9-1 - Topic 5: Lesson 8 Obesity and BMI
The lesson is specific the new Edexcel 9-1 GCSE and part of topic 5.
The lesson reviews a couple of extreme examples of obesity ad obesity surgery with differentiated questions to ensure the students stay focused. They then review BMI and the problems with it as a measure of obesity. There is a brief discussion of smoking before the student answer a Hinge point question to direct learning to different tasks on a worksheet. The lesson concludes with an exam question.
CB4d Edexcel 9-1- Genetically modified organisms - Lesson 7
The lesson starts by establishing a definition of GMO. It then moves on to reviewing a couple of videos with guided questions to promote thinking. The lesson looks to engage student in a paired research project in the exam board specific species before posing an exam question.
